Offical American Idol Discussion Thread

I know everyone seems to be at odds about who should be still on or who certain people think should be off.

As much as the judges and Ryan tell the people that this is not a popularity contest and we should vote for the best talent, they are wrong! Case in point, Reuben and Clay...both great talent and when it came down to the wire, people had to pick which person they preferred!

The contestants are chosen because they do have talent. People vote for which talented person they Like the most! Everyone has different tastes so there is always going to be an argument over which person deserves the title. Obviously it would be a boring competition if all of the contestants sounded the same. Diversity is good for us and so, as much as many would like to say that one person doesn't deserve to be there over another, there are others who enjoy that person's performance, or their way of singing.

Also, there are many in the competition who have unique voices that won't sound good with certain venues. But we can see this with any music venue. If a country singer sings a pop song, it will most likely sound like a country song! But that doesn't mean that the song is bad or the singer can't sing.

Just my thoughts!

aMEN!

I think AI would be a really boring show if there was a definitive winner before the very end. Look, Latoya might seem like the breakout winner in the final group, but we now know she isn't. This is keeping it watchable. I kind of like the surprises myself.

Of course, if I was Latoya or Fantasia's family, I might be thinking a little differently...;)

And there's the problem! You don't vote for someone because he's a local kid - you vote for talent. One vote here, one vote there and they add up - which is why he is still in. Do you really think that he could be the next American Idol? You think he is so superior to the others? Or do people want him to win because he is so nice, cute and a local kid?

I honestly don't think my 11 yr old daughters 1 vote kept him in the competition. The only way to prevent voting for someone solely based on the location is to block all calls coming in from the area code that the person lives in.

I vote based on the peformance and what I like...I don't care where he or she is from! I'm done explaining why I vote for the person or people I do. You don't like John..fine, don't like him. I do. When he had a bad night I didn't vote for him.

Do I think he should be the winner...no. But i don't think any of this group should be a winner...ok maybe LaToya.

I think we can assume that there are ALOT of votes coming in from the various hometowns of AI contestants. It's the nature of the beast. I doubt that JS is the only one getting votes from home.

Like Nancy said, maybe they should block all votes from a person's home area code - if it's possible to do.

But in the end, JS probably has alot of young and OLD (my 61 year old mom loves him to death) fans elsewhere anyway.

And my DD and her friends are still in mourning over the loss of JPL, and I believe he comes from Idaho, way across the country from us - so go figure.;)

That's what they did for that World Idol show - voters from the contestants home country could not vote from them. It might make it more fair?

Yep, perhaps voters from the whole home state should be banned. It might tick off some people, but so what?:p

Yeah, I think there will be alot of ticked off people, but hey - you can't please everyone! I think this might give the people with smaller home towns and states a more equal playing field? Who knows - but they really have to change the system they have now.

But then you'd get people complaining the other way...saying it wasn't fair they couldn't vote for someone just because of where they lived. I think it's just a no win situation. (pardon the pun)

Just think Fox must be loving this because people are still talking about AI and it's almost time for the next show. I'll bet people watch this week that haven't watched before just to see what is going on. The powers that be at Fox and AI know exactly what they are doing.

So it's Gloria this week...I wonder if it will be just her songs or any latin songs. Now I like John but couldn't you just see him singing Ricky Martin??? :teeth:

Yeah, he'd give William Hung a run for his money, now wouldn't he? ;)

I just REALLY don't want to see Fantasia sing "Bad Boys" - that might be more than I can stomach.:p

You are entitled to your opinion also, but My Girl wasn't the only bad night (not just my opinion, but the judges also) - how about Lately? (lacked emotion, pitchy, dull - RJ's rendition from Season 1 was much better - at least he put emotion into the song), Crocodile Rock? (pitchy, not on beat - completely horrible,) Mandy? (dull, no emotion). I believe this has a lot to do with him being so young, and in time, with coaching he could become the next Harry Conick, Jr., but he is way out of his league at this point in time. Everyone keeps saying he scored 100 in some other competition doing an aria (I think), but it this is not that type of competition. You shouldn't judge someone who did fine in another competition - concentrate on this one. All these kids will do well if they are talented enough - only time will tell.

You're describing your impression of his performance, not a technical assessment. I disagree that the other songs were pitchy. His so-called "Dull and lacking emotion" is a style. If you don't like it, fine. But can we please not lunp everything into one bucket?

As far as the judges opinion, I don't hold much respect for their opinion when they clearly contradict themselves constantly. Simon is about the only opinion I even listen to, but the problem is that the judges are no more objective than we are and there critisicms of each contestant are guided by who they are backing to win.

It is strictly Miami Sound Machine / Estefan numbers they must pick from. (I posted the list off her her two volume Greatest Hits on the newer thread.)

All the famous crooners had kind of a "flat" style IMHO. Listen to Bing Crosby sing - he's got a very level tone. Nothing super emotional about his singing, but would anyone like to say he wasn't successful? Didn't think so.;)

I disagree - everytime I hear White Christmas, I tear up.

I grew up listening to Lawrence Welk Singers, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, etc (my grandmother babysat alot and that's all she listened to), so I can appreciate those singers. John S. however, is not in that league at all IMHO. I am not bashing him - I did like the Casablanca song he did. All I am saying is that he is not an "American Idol". If they had an "American Crooner" I am sure he would do well. He's just got to stick with what he can do, and not stray from that type of music.

I wonder what surprises this week will bring.

I don't know, but I LOVE the surprises. Keeps it interesting. Do you think that Gloria will be a "Simon-like" judge or a "Paula-like" judge. I'm thinkin' Paula.

None of the guest judges are mean. Even if they didn't like it (and you can tell when they don't like the performance) they search for something positive to say anyway. :)

Except for Quentin Tarantino - but none of the songs were his, so he didn't have an excuse for having to be nice.
