I feel terrible! :guilty: But that shall be explained in a second. You see, I was wondering if anyone has ever been to Disney, or been there with someone, who had a very odd food allergy. Here is my dilema: I just recently developed a rather severe allergy to citric acid. It's one of the world's top preservatives and if you look at ingredients at your local grocery store, it's in just about everything. I have a reaction if something is so much as fried in butter that has this in it, and while it's not life threatening, I wind up in a lot of pain and basically bedroom bound for the next 24-48 hours once it gets into my system. Thats something I don't want to deal with on our honeymoon.

Now I understand that if you have PS you can call ahead and speak to the chef, but my husband and I have NEVER been sit down restaurant people, were too spontaneous so we only have 5 PS reservations.

Now what I'm worried about is the rest of the trip. It's a weird allergy b/c I can have certain brands of things, like Tops brand macaroni and cheese, but I can't have other brands of the same thing, such as Kraft mac&cheese, since different companies use different preservatives. Now we will have fridges in our rooms, so were set for little snacks and breakfast, but I'm terrified of having an allergic reaction on our honeymoon and spoiling a good 2 or 3 days because of it! Does anyone have any recommendations on what to do about this, or any idea of where I could find out what brands Disney uses? ? Is there perhaps a list of ingredients online somewhere?

Now this is why I'm upset. I've already called Disney a few times to ask the same thing, that way I know what is safe to eat at the food courts, but the CM's I have spoken to have been flat out nasty. I feel bad enough troubling them over this, and have been really nice and patient since it's obviously unsual, but I did not need them telling me they could not help me. I understand that THEY can't help me but I thought they could give me a central number so I wouldn't have to call each and every single individual food court and stop in the parks. I had been thought that ALL of Disney would use the same brands, etc. but 2 CM's told me they "doubted it." Whatever happened to the Disney pledge of accomodating all allergies?

So does anyone have any ideas? I feel horrible because I know my DH and I's future travels will be limited b/c of this allergy, but I had at least hoped that Disney could accomodate it. I wanted to take care of this all before we left so I could memorize what was safe for me and what was not before we went, that way my husband would not have to watch me scanning ingredients the entire time. Thank you all so much for any help b/c I'm really starting to get discouraged! :guilty:

Citric Acid..geez that stuff is in everything! Sorry that I can't help much but you might post this in the disABILITIES forum. I think that's where I've seen stuff on allergies. Another suggestion is to do a search on 'peanut' or 'peanut allergy'. I know I've seen threads that had phone numbers for the individual restaurants so you could talk to the chef and explain your concerns. I don't know what to do about counter service, though. Good Luck!!

edit to add:
Try this thread. This is one of the threads that came up when I searched on peanut allergy. It's about a a child's severe peanut allergy but has a lot of good info. I don't think your allergy is going to be as big a problem as you think! Disney seems well-equipped to handle it.

My 3 yr old son is both a type 1 diabetic and has a severe peanut allergy - and allergic to tree nuts and somewhat to eggs and etc. Disney has been WONDERFUL and I mean :flower: WONDERFUL :flower: helping me with meals for him.

I suggest making as many sit down meals as you can afford - I think you get the best service that way and are assured of something safe to eat. I realize you want to be spontaneous but I think you have to decide which you'd prefer - seems less worry for meals if you make the PS. I realize it does keep you to a schedule of eating and you can't really cancel or spontaneously decide to show up somewhere but that is the trade-off we are making I guess.

I also called this number for the MK: Magic Kingdom Park: 407-824-5967
and the person answering the phone was able to email some info on what might be safe for my son to eat at all the theme parks. I am just overwhelmed at how much they CARE. It is great to talk to someone who "gets it" and knows how serious it is. Perhaps they can give you info for your food allergy too. It could be that citric acid is in so many things that it will be hard to find safe foods - but I hope you are able to do so.

Good luck!

Are the CMs at places like the park bakeries pretty knowledgeable about what is in the food they sell? For example, at Starbucks, when I ask if a certain bakery product has tree nuts, they are able to pull out a notebook that lists the ingredients for everything they sell. Do they have anything like that at WDW?

call 407-824-5967
It's the MK, make sure you talk to Brenda. She is AMAZING!!!

Also because you do have a food allergy you will be allowed to bring snacks in to the parks just no coolers.

Citric acid eh? Thats interesting, I'm allergic to certain kinds of citric acid. (citric acid is not a substance found in nature and is formulated in labs yep it's not from fruit) They make a lot of it with grains and I'm allergic to most whole grains, if it's made from corn, rice or potato I can have it. So I definatly feel your pain. Talk to Brenda and bring from home some power bars/bumble bars and nuts or cookies that you can have.

This upcoming trip I am purchasing a food saver (vaccum seals things) and baking my home made bread, cookies and muffins before I leave and bringing them with me so I know I have safe snacks that will at least get me through the day.

Good luck!

I have several odd food allergies too. I have never had a problem at WDW, even at counter service. If you would prefer counter service, just ask a CM to see the book of ingredients. They have these at every food service counter. They contain of list of ingredients in every item they offer including condiments. Just make sure that you check at every restaurant because the ingredients are not the same at all places. If you plan to go to a sit down restaurant, make sure to make ps's at least 72 hours in advance and let them know about your problem. They should be able to accomodate you easily. HTH

I can not drink wine with seafood. It does not effect me for a few hours but I get puffy, sweaty & ache all over. It is easy for me to control but sometimes at resturants I need to look over the menu before I place my drink order, and some waiters have gotten miffed about that.

and lately when I eat apples the roof of my mouth & my lips itch.

Waiters who get miffed if you wait to decide what you are eating before you order wine are know-nothings! What about those people (not me!) who are very knowledgable about wines and know the "perfect" wine to pair with each type of food?

Maybe you're allergic to the pesticides used on the apples. Have you had the same reaction from organic apples?
Interesting reaction to wine and seafood! This only happens when you combine them, huh? Maybe sulfites in the wine or iodine in seafood (primarily shellfish).
It's pretty amazing what foods can do to our bodies, both good and bad!

I have not tried organic apples yet, but it happens even when I peel them. I am prety sure it is the sulfites, my grandmother had the same problem.

The funny thing about the waiter thing is that there is two local places I eat at & the servers always bring me a Ice Tea when I sit down, & say let me know if you are having the fish tonite(& then smile at me). I must say I have had no problems with this at WDW.

It may actually be because of the natural pollens and such within the apple. I have oral allergy syndrome and I'm unable to eat pretty much any raw fruits or vegetables because of the severity of it, my throat will actually swell closed. Its a very odd allergy :guilty: To the OP, I think WDW should be able to accomodate you or at the very least, they'll do their best to try.

You might consider getting a DVC studio, FW or an offsite hotel with at least a mini-kitchen.

Consider getting your own breakfast and lunch. So many of Disney's meals are pre-plated or buffets. Your choice will be very limited. Splurge on a few sit down meals where your needs can be accommodated.

I have the same problem with raw fruits. I can't eat raw apples, peaches, pears, plums, etc. My throat swells up and I get hives around my mouth. :guilty:

our DS is allergic to milk, nuts, eggs. I have invaded the kitchens of many of the disney restaurants to read ingredients, since the slightest trace of sodium caseinate could kill him, and we couldn't trust the "no milk" assertion for anything which had packaged ingredients.

Disney does not use the same suppliers in different restaurants, and as you well know ingredients can change. I would check everything, and deal with the chefs, as explained in the posts you will find.

My DS also has Oral allergy syndrome, which is not life-threatening, but is that reaction, with hives and blisters to many raw fruits and vegetables. He can eat granny smith apples and that's about it.

I would love to hear of other strange allergies, we still can't figure out what is in sweet and sour sauce that my daughter gets a SEVERE reaction. She is allergic to tree nuts/peanuts, and milk, but dr. isn't sure what was in the McDonalds sauce that made her hives from head to toe screaming and scraping her tongue. The whites in her eyes turn red too, she is pretty bad and it's pretty scary. Needless to say dr. told us only give her the basics don't try anything new anymore.

There are anchovies in Mc D's sauce...is she by chance allergic to fish?

I have a whole grain allergy and was told to avoid wheat/oat/rye/barley/spelt/malt

so it could be something like that too

First of all thank you all SO much for the fast replies today! I checked back tonight and found so many helpful comments so thank you all tons!!! I swear Disers are the best group around!

Kandeebunny Thank you SO much for the phone number and personal recommendation for Brenda. It's interesting to see someone allergic to this as well! And good that you pointed the fact out that its formulated in labs, I think it's a common misconception amongst people that its just withdrawn directly from fruit. Though I can't eat "citrus" fruits either. Thats a pity too becasue I really like fruit! lol Thank you so much for mentioning the food sealers, I had not heard of them before so I will check those out and see if I can find some online. I've got a real chef for a husband so he's always finding ways to make me my favorite foods in a way so I can actually eat it, and it would be great to take some muffins and such down to Disney! :) And I had no idea that you could take food into the parks either! Do you need a doctors note for when you enter the park with food? Have you ever been stopped doing that? Thanks so much!

mommi97 I sent you a PM.

Twocat and MinieM21 thank you so much for the links! I'm going to bookmark them! :)

ArielsMommy thank you for pointing out that the ingredients are not the same everywhere! Boy would I have been surprised had I assumed that! Also thank you for mentioning the books behind the counters! I did not know about those either!

Selket thank you for the phone number Ill be using it!

MissyPie Thanks for letting me know about starbucks! If I ever start drinking cofee Ill make sure to ask for that book!

enrich I am so sorry to hear about the allergies in your family as well! You sound like me with the researching here. :) Im just glad mine is not life threatening, its just very painful, but I couldn't imagine how scary that would be for you to eat out then!

Lewisc we are actually planning on joining DVC before our next trip so we can cook our own meals when at Disney. :) Thats a great idea so thank you for suggesting it! And were a bit spontaneous and never really keep to a schedule since were all over the place when on vacation. THus the lack of PS reservations. We do plan to have a lot more sit down meals this time around though when compared to our other trips. DH figures it'll be safer that way just like you did and your right. I just hate sitting inside a restaurant when I could be outside running around the parks! :)

Okay so Im starting to feel sheepish about panicking now. :) I guess I just got grouchy CMs when I called because it sounds like they are normally great at accomodating people! Seriously though, thank you guys and gals all again b/c you have helped so much! :) I really appreciate it. :cool1:

Kae: Have you see an allergist for this at all? Some allergies have medications that you can be given to alleviate certain affects in case you accidentally injest something you shouldn't. Make sure to let them know if this is an immediate reaction (that happens within minutes) or a slow going one (that happens later, so much later that your not entirely sure what the reaction is from.) THat can really help them narrow it down. Best of luck!

Try the Food Saver brand the one thats about $80 they range from $60-$250. It was suggested we try the $80 one and its FANTASTIC! You can buy the rools of the material to make the pouches off of amazon cheaper then anywhere else I have seen.

I have *never* been stopped with my snacks, I mean you can't bring in a soft sided cooler so I usually bring crackers, cookies and some candy snacks I can eat. You might want to try www.glutenfreemall.com It's geared towards people like me with a gluten allergy BUT my favorite snack (oreo like cookies) are on there Glutano Chocolate O's Sandwich Cookies
175g Package
Chocolate cream filled cookies.

Ingredients: Vanilla crème (35%): (unhardened vegetable oil, sugar, sweet whey powder, whole milk powder, milk sugar, lecithin, natural flavor), maize starch, rice flour, sugar, unhardened vegetable oil (palm oil), cocoa powder strongly defatted, inulin, thickener guar gum, ammonium hydrogen carbonate, sodium carbonate, sea salt, vanilla.

As you can see they list out all ingredients, granted the food is more expensive, but its some prepared stuff you may be able to eat as well as mixes that might work for you. Those cookies are REALLY good and travel well too, and from the looks of them they should be ok for you! Also you may way to try looking at Dr. Scharrs crackers if you can find them, they are the best cracker I've found thus far. I'm sure you already know this but make sure your shampoo/toothpaste/soap/meds are free of citric acid as well as it can be absorbed by your skin. Bring that stuff from home as you probably aren't safe with what the hotels supply.

OH and these Boomi Bar ROCK! So good and free of citric acid!!! Because they are mostly nuts they give you protein and energy and travel really well!

really anchovies? Never knew that! She isn't allergic to any fish that I know of , we have given her flounder, shrimp, bluefish, and crab. However we don't eat anchovies...blah so maybe that's it!
