Obesity epidemic and WDW??

well, since there are entire television networks devoted to food and food preparation, not to mention a sizeable industry built around food as a hobby and/or an interest rather than as simple fuel, it doesn't seem to be a singular obsession of those on this board.

Yes, but they focus on cooking, and don't call it a food pornography network.

Before this threat gets ugly I would like to introduce the : New Healthier Food Choice" at Disney.
And this is no joke. We had a real living goldfish swimming in our flower vase. :lmao: Disney Paris is trying out this food choice.

An "epidemic" is an outside force that you cannot control, only minimize your exposure or risk. Over-eating, I'm sorry, is NOT an epidemic. We can control what goes in our mouth.

An epidemic does not specifically mean it has to be an outside force you cannot control. The obesity problem in this country is indeed an epidemic, and referred to that way by the medical community.

I would just like to add...

To all the people with smilies that are eating pocorn...

That popcorn is almost the size of your smiley head. It needs to be much smaller. And I hope that popcorn has no salt or butter on it.

Thank you.

I have a few points to make about the first post. All of the following is JMHO.

1 There are many more healthy options at WDW compared to 10 years ago.
You can eat healthy there if you want to.

2 Vacations are times for people to have fun and enjoy life, this includes eating foods that you might not have on a regular basis. Example: I don't eat dessert after dinner at home. But I do sometimes on vacation.

3 I have traveled all over the USA and yes, there are many obese people at WDW compared to all the other vacation destinations I've been to. Many are morbidly obese.

My theory on why this is:
WDW is a place known for it's family freindly atmosphere, where the employees are kind and polite to everyone.
You can be reasonably assured of not having to deal with vulgar or insulting sights or actions.
I personally believe that most obese people use food as a form of self medicating for problems in their lives. Some people use booze, some drugs, but food is all around and cheap. Some people are disabled or have other reasons they are obese.
Obese people like to go to WDW because for the most part they can be free from the rudeness from others they deal with in their everyday lives. So you have a larger than normal percentage of guests that are obese there compared to the average vacation destination.

It is a known fact that the population of the US is heavier than ever, but I blame the sedentary lifestyle most people live these days, the large portions and all the dining out people do compared to when I was a kid 40+ years ago. You never saw morbidly obese people, much less very obese ones back then. People ate out at most once a month. When I was a kid a regular hamburger and small fry was an adult meal at McDonalds.

I believe most people do know the correct way to eat these days, and are very aware of the calories in most foods. They just aren't too worried about that large portion of fries when there are bigger things in life to worry about- terrorism, layoffs, savings going down the tubes, etc.

4 In the end, you are responsible for your own body and health, not the government or buisnesses.

Of course all this is my speculation, I could be very wrong as I often am!

Not for nothing but I was talking to the OP directly and expressing my opinion. I'm sorry you seem to have a problem with that.

I was expressing mine too. You said that you belive disney should get rid of lunches and desserts on the dinning plan and I disagree.

:thumbsup2 I agree with everything you just said!!

Your right, there are many morbidly obese people at WDW, and i noticed many were not even walking! They were in wheelchairs. Sad.

And BTW metabolic disorders do account for some peoples obesity, but they are very rare. Mostly, these people just are completely sedentary and constantly eat.

Yes, but they focus on cooking, and don't call it a food pornography network.

Seems to me you have a problem with the word "pornography". Take you own advice and lighten up a bit. It is all in fun.

Yes, but they focus on cooking, and don't call it a food pornography network.

Nonetheless, that term was first used by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, probably as a derogatory term, and was picked up and adopted by various networks of food enthusiasts. It was not invented for the disboards.

I watch the Food Network, its current emphasis is not necessarily on cooking at home. Its most popular current shows are competitions, restaurants and "reality programming"

so... OP

You said LARGER people going up to buffets 4 times was bad like it is okay if you are "normal" to go up four times. Just because someone is not Pooh sized doesn't mean they are healthy

I would have had more respect for you and your point that you are trying to get across if you had directed at EVERYONE and how EVERYONE no matter what their size should watch what they eat

or

If you had just left what size other people out of it and talked about how much everyone eats no matter what their size on vacation

But you had to go the judgemental way and point a finger at the people who are larger and not just say "i wish there were healthier options

Just my two cents

BTW: I am a former Pooh sized person, I did not get thay way because I went to WDW and did not lose weight because someone took away the desserts option. It was something I had to work out myself.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but you can't tell anything about my health or the way I normally eat by looking at me, or seeing what I eat on vacation. You also can't see my exercise habits. I usually lose weight on vacation, but I sure don't feel as healthy at the end as I do the other 49 weeks in a year.

I'm too busy having fun at Disney to care what anyone is eating, except when I see a big grin on someone's face while enjoying something. Especially folks like me with food intolerances/allergies who have so many more options at WDW than they normally do.

But if you're worried about eating healthy, there's a Sweet Tomatoes at Crossroads right outside property. Grab a salad and some fruit for desert. It's one of my favorite lunch choices for Disney days. :thumbsup2 Also, you might want to work on not worrying so much about other people - stress is pretty bad on the body as well.

A few things:

  1. Even if Disney World starting serving nothing but salads, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make one iota of difference in the percentage of obese people in this country.
  2. There are healthy-ish options at Disney, but you have to be willing to look for them and make the right choices.
  3. When you're observing people at Disney World, keep in mind you're seeing people's vacation behavior, not necessarily their real-life behavior.
  4. It is so much easier to notice the obese people making return trips to the buffet, than it is to notice the folks quietly eating their salads, or having a half of a sandwich on the way to the next ride.
  5. If you're like me, you don't have many buffet-type meals outside the world. Buffet behavior can be downright disgusting in many ways. If your only buffet experience is at Disney World, I could see how you might think it's a Disney issue. It's not; it's a buffet issue.
  6. I'm guilty of it as much as the next guy, but I wish we would all pay less attention to what everyone else is doing. Sure, people watching can be entertaining, but judging others can't make for a very fun vacation.

You can easily eat healthier food at WDW and even at McDonald's and such places but people have to make that choice. They choose not to and they certainly can't be forced to eat healthy items or smaller portions. The country is out of shape overall but that has nothing to do with restaurants and themeparks.

And BTW metabolic disorders do account for some peoples obesity, but they are very rare. Mostly, these people just are completely sedentary and constantly eat.

More than 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with thyroid disease, and another 13 million people are estimated to have undiagnosed thyroid problems in the U.S. alone.

Seriously? Where was this? I'm not a fan of the fish-as-decoration trend.

And while you were sitting and watching these folks, you were able to diagnose the reason for them being in the wheelchair correct? Because everyone knows the only reason for being in a chair is due to weight right?:rolleyes1

FOOD PORN????????? You have GOT to be kidding me. That is disgusting. Who would sit around on the internet looking at pictures of peoples food, and especially call it PORN?? Completely weird to me, this obsession with food.

Um, I've been known to explore that thread. If I'm thinking about trying a new restaurant I like to see what the food looks like. Maybe I'm weird. I'm also the person at a restaurant who sees something amazing on another table and says "Whatever that is, I want it!".

For the record, I'm a college kid on a budget who loves junk food and has been known to eat a Big Mac, fries, and a large Coke (oh the horror!). But for the most part, I try to eat healthy and have learned how to do so on my budget. However, like a previous poster said, it is MUCH easier to eat junk on a budget than to eat good, healthy meals. (And for the record, I am not nor have I ever been overweight)

When I'm on Disney, or any vacation for that matter, I don't watch what I eat. In fact, on a recent day trip to Epcot I had Chick Fil A for breakfast on the way to the park, a lamb wrap at Tangeriene Cafe, school bread, and tostadas. For dinner? Taco Bell, of course!

The point is, you only live once. If you want to spend yours judging people then that's your choice. I plan on enjoying mine by taking another lap around the buffet.

By the way, I don't think the food porn thread is disgusting. I do think your blatant judgement of others is.

Nevertheless, I'm glad you were able to enjoy your vacation! :thumbsup2
