NYC help Christmas Surprise

Marriott Marquis is right in Times Square and is awesome! Wicked was great, Newsies was good, Matilda was very good as was Rock of Ages!

Are they flying, driving or catching a train into the city?
I asked, because we have had great times staying in New Jersey. Either Secaucus or Hoboken area. We do Priceline and usually get a Courtyard/Holiday Inn etc. 3* around $80 a night.
It's not a hassel getting into/out of the city by bus or water taxi. The bus drops you off at 42 street, so you are almost in the middle of TS.
It cost $3pp each way, but it beats parking and driving into the city.
Seen Matilda and enjoyed it. Get them 1 show and give them as much money as you can for a shopping spree/good times!!

You may actually just spoil your suprise! If they are going to NY, they might want to have enough time to PLAN what things they want to do.
It want spoil the trip. This way they can google search and what ever to make an iteniary for things they really want to do.
Even if they can't get tickets to some TV shows, sometimes you can luck up and stand in line the day of and get on set.

We are sending our girls, ages 24 and 20 to NYC January 2 thru 5 as their Christmas present. It is a surprise and I had to coordinate between one going back to college and the other going back to teach high school.

I am looking for decent hotels in the theatre district/Times Square area. Any suggestions?

We are also giving them tickets to two shows. Do I just give them money and have them buy hem the day of or just buy ahead of time? We are thinking of two of the following Wicked, Newsies, Cinderella, Chicago or Lion King. Can anyone give me their pick of those show for two twenty something year old girls? I would like them to open something up on Christmas Day.
