Nudity in Gym Locker Rooms.

I was at WDW a few years back and I noticed a strange happening (at least strange to MY way of thinking) in the Contemporary pool bathroom......

I was in there and there was a lady using the shower, she jumped out and toweled off in front of the mirror.....in my view.:scared: :confused3 I was dumbfounded and probably gave her a weird a look....then I left.

I just don't understand WHY she felt the need to towel off in front of the mirror where every Tom, Dick or Harry (not to mention ME) could see her if the main bathroom door was opened....weird people.

I hate when I have to see naked women walking around the locker room. I want to tell them to cover up!!! I'm not one of those that feels it's okay to walk around nude. We wear clothes for a reason. I would also shower when I got home. No public showers for me.

You're going to find naked women in a women's locker room. If you don't want your kids to see it, then don't bring them. :thumbsup2

Well, we disagree.

This dragging children of the opposite sex into locker rooms is a relatively new thing. People managed to get along without doing that for years. I raised 3 boys and managed to not take them into places where there were naked women.

It can be done. And now that our gym has banned it, it is happening again.

I don't flaunt anything. I rarely see anyone else do it...though I have on occasion. And they don't always have the bod to be flaunting, truth be told! But flaunting or not, people use locker rooms to dress and undress. Kind of the purpose of the locker room. If you're going to take your little girl into the men's locker room, you can't whine that she saw a *****, you know? That's what it is there for!

Again, it's fine with me if people want their kids seeing naked adults. But I don't want to be naked in front of 5 year old boys, so I appreciate that the gym put an end to it.

100% agree, I'm not sure why parents feel so entitled to drag their opposite sex children through the changing rooms. If the kid is under 7, why on earth can't he put his swim-suit on at home? Why can't he towel dry on deck and have a bath at home? I grew up with plenty of brothers, and if they weren't old enough to use the gender appropriate locker room Mom simply made due. In fact the only time I remember seeing a boy in the pool changing room was after a Mommy and me class since Mom would have needed a shower too. The cut-off for these classes was 2 years old.

Seriously what do these little boys need a full locker room for, to dry and style their hair for work :confused3

We belong to a community recreation center that has a pool, tennis courts, fitness room, etc, as well as gymnastics and various fitness classes.

When I take DS (6 y/o) to swimming lessons, I take him into the ladies room to change afterward as he has a lot of trouble with the wet bathing suit. There are not private dressing areas in there. I feel uncomfortable worrying about people being offended by my child in there, not at all about him seeing anyone nude. Maybe we are weird, but at our house nakedness isn't hidden...none of us shut the door when dressing or changing clothes, and we don't always shut the bathroom door either. My son doesn't even notice someone is nude, its just not something exceptional to him.

Any Family type gym I ever been too, 99.99% is ALWAYS the Moms left with the kids. Most woman bring their sons into the locker room out of need not want.

Sometimes when kids are around, regardless of if they are in the RIGHT or WRONG, Adults (acting Adult) should have to tone it down a bit. .

In my office, we curse tell dirty jokes...etc. When kids come to the office, they SHOULDNT be there, but we all tone it down a bit. Why shouldnt the adults in a locker room, cover it up when kids are around.

Kids deserve respect too!

Nudity in a locker room? Meh...I can't remember the last time I saw a kid outside of the gym nursery, much less in the men's locker room.

It is a locker room. People change. Nakedness is expected.

I never said that I was uncomfortable with people changing...
Don't try to put a spin on what I am saying.

The issue here, as described by the OP, is not that people are changing, but they are wandering around for longer periods of time just flaunting their naked bodies.

IMHO, that is only appropriate at home in ones private quarters.

I have no problem with you changing.. but I think that there are indeed a certain group of people who view situations like this as a way to legally express their exhibitionism on others.

I remember on the last of these endless and controversial threads somebody posted that they were in a locker/changing room with their daughter (who I think was a young teenager) and a woman actually came over, and propped up her leg with her foot up on the bench exposing things that nobody else needed needed to view.

I really think you need to do a hidden camera investigation and post it on youtube. Nobody here believes you, especially the guys.

Yeah, but to the same sex? I don't get the problem. I've been involved in sports and working out as long as I can remember, so I've been in plenty of locker rooms. If we all have the same plumbing, what's the big deal?

Yup.

I don't get the hangup with nudity. I don't get dressed right after hopping out of the shower, but not because I'm an exhibitionist. I prefer to finish completely drying before putting on snug fitting garments, such as bras and panties, and I put on lotion.

I would feel the same way if I had a daughter. No one needs to be walking around naked in semi-public, locker room or elsewhere.

And why don't little boys need a locker room? They need to change sometimes too. I'm certainly not going to send my son alone into the men's locker room to change.

In my opinion, nudity within a family is different than being exposed to nude strangers.

Probably, but as you say, it's legal. My question is still how society views female nudity versus male nudity. Lots of women who don't think too much about taking their 5 year old son into a women's locker room would probably not feel as comfortable with their 5 year old daughter being taken into a men's locker room. Just an observation of our culture.

I am cracking up here!!!!
Laugh-O-Grams, this may totally offend you... But, I don't care if it is the same sex or not... You may not understand why I would be thinking.. "Hey, grab a towel why dontcha... There are things I just don't need to see..." And I may not understand why anyone would want to go around in a public place (locker room or not) with out even a towel or some underwear....

We will just have to agree to disagree...

Even if we have the same plumbing, doesn't mean we have to share the view...

Perhaps my point was unclear. I was trying to say that because he is so used to it at home, he couldn't care less if a naked woman was strutting through a locker room, as he wouldn't even notice.

This is precisely why our gym does not allow children in the adult locker rooms, PERIOD. There are family rooms for parents/kids who need to change, as well as boys' and girls' locker rooms for older kids who are there for after-school programs without a parent, etc.

To be honest, though, nudity in front of my child (with me present) wouldn't bother me at all. I don't view nudity as a bad thing in and of itself, the way most Americans do. :confused3 Believe me, he wouldn't bat an eye...he's seen it all before! I agree with the PP who stated that her son wouldn't even think it out of the ordinary; neither would mine!

Dawn, my dh was complaining about this in the men's locker room!! :lmao: He said there was a group of old guys who just stayed naked forever in the locker room. I totally got what you and he are saying. I grew up playing team sports all through school, and there are just some unwritten laws. When you're naked, you're supposed to be getting dressed or headed for a shower. Under no circumstances do you have a conversation that requires eye contact while you're naked, etc. You don't read a magazine, do your makeup etc, cause it's skeeving the rest of us out!:sad2:

If you are having eye contact, what's the problem?

You are entitled to your opinion, just as those who are comfortable with nudity are entitled to theirs.

No offense taken. As we've seen from numerous posts on both sides of the debate, some people's attitudes about public nudity are simply more sensitive than others. In the end, I say, to each his own...

Yeah, I can see that. I guess I just see a certain familiarity within a family and it being taken for granted, but at some point kids will take notice of those they aren't accustomed to sharing an environment with. It's natural and nothing abnormal about observing others.
