Now Bring Me That Horizon ~ It Begins P115

I just want to state for the record that this thread is really dangerous to my wallet.

To your wallet? Think about how mine feels! :lmao:

I'm not even a huge Vera fan, yet I've been consumed lately with trying to check out a Vera wristlet to see if it would work for my December trip. In Raspberry Fizz. I think Heidi may be responsible for my seeing that pattern too.:rotfl:

Seriously, that's how it all starts.

I wasn't a huge Vera fan either. :rotfl2:

Hello!! Just started to read your TR with Tink and then came over here. I just read it all!! (Ok so I cheated and only read the chapters but seriously 71 pages!! That's rediculous!! In only the best way!! ;)) Ok so I love your plans, it seems like you finally have some concrete plans. I'm glad you found a bag and shoes finally!! I know how hard that can be!! Of course you found what you needed at Kohls, that is the best store ever!! I got most of my vacation clothes at Kohls and I always look there first!! They always have sales, it's great!! I think your costumes for MNSSHP sound great!! Can't wait to hear more!!

:welcome:

Happy to have you here!

Kohl's is awesome. I do the majority of my shopping there. Clothes for DS, work clothes, they have everything. And if you can score a 30% off code with free shipping, it's fantastic. :thumbsup2

You guys have been having way too much fun here! This is the first REAL opportunity I've had to be on my computer for days, and now I see what I've missed! I think I may have a hernia from laughing so hard at the images of Nana with a rolling pin! Rich!

Welcome back, dearie. We are an amusing bunch, are we not?

I'll make a deal with maroo, I'll bring a bowl of gazpacho for my photo prop, and she can bring her banana! ;)

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Wow, you really are a bargain shopper!!! I had no idea!

I am the epitome of frugal. It's a blessing and a curse.

For example, I haven't felt comfortable with my car for the past couple of months. When I drive it sometimes, it just feels wrong, almost like a transmission issue. It also needs new back brakes in September, which will run me another $400 at least, never mind what else could be wrong with it. I've had it looked at, and they inform me it's "fine," but it doesn't feel right. It's hard to explain it to them without sounding like someone who doesn't know anything about what she's talking about. Which is in essence what I am, but not how I wanted to be treated.

So I've thought about finally buying the car I've been coveting for about a year now. And when I went to check the trade in value on my car, it had tanked. From $6000 to $2300. Why?

It's a Saturn.

Hindsight. Always 20/20.

So now, I don't know that I can afford what I want, but I'm going to look at one on Thursday anyway. There's special pricing through Costco (typically $100 over invoice) so we'll see. :confused3 I really want something safe, but I don't relish the thought of a car payment when we have none.

The car issue really, really stinks. Same thing happened to me last year--the value of my car dropped dramatically over a 3 month period. It was an SUV. But I had to have a new car--the Explorer had 150K on it and although it was running okay, it was going to need more work over the next few months that I did not want the hassle of.

So I bought a car. At least I bought a Ford. They aren't in trouble like GM and Chrysler are. Yet.

Seriously, that's how it all starts.

No kidding! I wasn't even thinking that I needed a new bag for the parks then I eyed Tink's cute wristlet in the pics on your trip report and I've become obsessed with getting a wristlet. Then the talk of Veras, and raspberry fizz...

It's all gone downhill from there. Although I'm making myself hold off from buying anything online until I can go the mall and check one out in person.

I hear you. My car has almost 97,000 miles on it, and it carries some very precious cargo. Namely, my son.

Of course I'm worried about my safety, but when you've got little ones, it just compounds everything, you know?

I think I may have to bite the bullet and buy the car. The problem is that if we do that, it's a huge choice. It means we're not paying off DH's student loan this year, and we definitely won't be able to consider buying a house. Now, I'm very happy in our apartment, so the house thing doesn't bother me, although it would have been nice to have the $8000 tax credit. The student loan bothers me. In essence, if that were payed off, a car payment wouldn't hurt so much, you know?

I highly, highly, highly recommend you check them out in person. I went to a local store that carries Veras and I'm so glad I did. There was a ton of stuff I wanted to order online, but when I saw it in person, I didn't like it. Definitely go look before you succumb to the craze. ;)

TK, I thought about you today and wanted to tell you this story to show that I am raising my kids right.

We have a new puppy, and after all the usual debate over a name, he is Jack.

So now whenever I say "Jack," DD13 and DD8 will immediately correct me, "CAPTAIN Jack."

As it should be. pirate:

:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2: Bless you for raising them in the pirate way. ;)

Oh good!!....we're still talking bags. Somewhat.:confused3

Cuz I finally went to Target today and bought THIS!...

It's almost The Bag That Got Away from last summer. But this one has some extra little do-dad prints on it that the other one did not. I looked at several but my eye kept coming back to this little number, so that was that. It's so "me.":goodvibes

Ok, Bag Brag Interruption of PTR over. Sorry 'bout that....pirate:

.

DS has been a pirate for the past 3 years for Halloween. I asked him what he wanted to be this year. . .

You guessed it: a Pirate. :rotfl:

Good boy! :lmao: Actually, at MNSSHP, that's what DS has been for the past three years. It's so easy for us to do. :goodvibes

No worries, mate. I had a whole chapter typed out, my computer flaked and I lost it.

I now have to retype it all. :sad2:

Never a dull moment in the TK household.

Never. :sad2:

We backtrack slightly. When I was in college, I had a beautiful red betta named Obi Wan. He died on my birthday. The pet store felt so badly, they wanted to replace him. I said no. I didn't want a replacement, I wanted Obi Wan.

Yes, I've always had an inner five year old, what? :lmao:

They insisted.

They gave me a blue betta which I name Anakin. And that sucker lived just to spite me, I swear it. Behold, the power of the dark side. :darth:

So suffice it to say when driving home with my son one day in the car, upon hearing these fateful words, "Mama...I want a fish," I felt some amount of trepidation and a little excitement.

We live in a pet free apartment complex, but you're allowed to have fish. That's the only type of pet they'll allow here. Aquatic.

Quite fitting for this pirate family.

So I did my research. Took books out from the library, and it just so happened one of my neighbors was getting rid of a one gallon tank. Score: a free tank! I went to Walmart to purchase gravel, fake plants, I wanted a nice little home for our new friend.

I ended up calling the pet store before I set up the tank because the filter and tubing looked old to me. We went in and Jonathan (wonderful, wonderful Jonathan) helped us. He was great. I admitted I knew nothing. He told me everything I needed to know to get the tank set up, helped me pick out new tubing, water conditioner, and new filters, and sent me home with the proper instructions for getting our tank ready for our new as yet to be picked fish.

Now Jonathan, who was never condescending, just very informative, which I heartily appreciated, gave us a couple of options for some hearty, hopefully hard to kill fish.

What can I say, with my track record, I was nervous. I wanted to do absolutely everything right for DS, you know? Optimal fish environment!

Jonathan recommended minnows, guppies, danios, or bettas.

So after letting our tank acclimate for 48 hours we went back to see Jonathan at the pet store and pick out a fish.

DS looked at the minnows and danios and said no.

The guppies wouldn't be in until tomorrow.

Taking a deep breath I said, DS, "Do you want to go look at the bettas?"

"Yes, Mama."

:::sigh:::

DS picked out a beautiful red beta. I explained to DS that his betta was a boy, and what would he like to name him.

"Otto," he says, "like the fish in the book." At first I thought, they must have read something at preschool that prompted this whole fish thing, but in recently talking to my mother, she thinks that's the name of the fish in One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. It could very well be.

So we pay for Otto, some more supplies I needed and we're on our merry way. Now Otto is in a plastic cup with a snap on lid with a nice little airhole. I can tell it's plastic by feeling it, so as long as DS is careful, I think we'll be fine.

I make the mistake of letting DS carry Otto upstairs.

You can see where this is going right?

I know how klutzy my son is. I know that inherent genetics cause both him and I to have accidents from time to time. But he's four. It's his first pet. I'm thinking he'll be extra careful. I'm thinking he won't succumb to the genetic lot that I've given him. I'm wrong.

Because by the time I get up there, DS is in tears, saying I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry over and over.

And Otto is on the floor of our kitchen. Not in his cup, oh no. That broke in half! There's our new fish laying on the floor of the kitchen!!!!

:scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1::scared1:

At which point, I start saying, "Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no," over and over again.

DS - "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." :::sniff, sniff, tears dripping:::
TK - "Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no..."

I panic. I rip open the net that hasn't be sterilized and do my best to get Otto in there without handling him too much. I manage to get him in the net, place him gently on the kitchen counter and wrench open the lid to the tank.

I then gently place Otto in the tank, still in the net.

No following the directions from the pet store here. No place his cup in the tank to let him acclimate to the temparture, no put some tank water in so he gets used to it, just HELLO OTTO, WELCOME TO THE TK HOUSEHOLD!!!

OMG. Seriously.

If he lives, it'll be funny. So far, he looks fine. He's swimming around, and he ate (DS fed him once I got him calmed down), and he looks okay.

:::sigh:::

Welcome to my life. Never a dull moment.

Now this is trip related. Because we will have to get someone to watch Otto for us when we go away since it'll be for eight days.

See that nice tie-in?

And I do have to say, I'm a bit smitten. He's already swimming up to the side of the tank when I come over just like Obi Wan used to. And he'll follow my fingers on the side of the tank.

I mean, seriously. Who could resist that face?

So a hearty welcome to the newest member of the TK clan. pirate:

May he survive us well. ;)

This is so funny that you post this now. My dh and I have been talking about getting a fish for our dd for her birthday. Last night we agreed that this is what we are going to do. She really wants a dog but I am allergic. :cool1: I am not fond of dogs. I think it is because I got bit by the first dog I remember seeing. She needs no toys as she is the only grandchild on my side and the first grandaughter on my dh's side. She too has been talking about a fish. Otto is a very pretty fish.

Cute story TK!

We have a big salt water tank with live rock. Losing a $6 fish is nothing compared to losing a $60 fish....that stings the heart and the wallet.

Okay, I totally plan to respond to you both, but you will die laughing when you hear this.

The book is not One Fish, Two Fish.

It's "Otto, A Fish Out of Water" :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

OMG! How appropo!!!!! Mom just called to tell me. It's actually a book written by Dr. Suess' wife based on book he wrote, he gave her permission to redo it. :lmao:

Oooo...I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with a dog. I personally love dogs. The reason we live in a pet free is because I had a horrendous cat allergy. I get the shots and it's not as bad now, but it used to be so bad that my throat would close. Not good.

Thanks for saying Otto's pretty. I'm rather partial.

Oh, I hear you. I believe Otto cost us $4.99. This is one of the reasons we're starting small. :thumbsup2

I too have bad allergies. When I was in 9th grade I was so sick I missed like 52 days of school. Well after tons of testing and almost having my adoindsand tonsils out they decided I should go to an allergist. Well I had been on a certain allergy med for so long that after 6 months of being off of it it was still in my blood stream. So they could never do the skin test but they did a blood test and discovered that I am severely allergic to cats, dogs, dust, mold, grass, ragweed, and some other weed that I don't remember. So I started in on the allergy shots then after a year they taught me how do give them to myself. I don't need them anymore but I think I need to find an allergist as I think I have developed food allergies.

Do you think it's possible your recent headaches are related to your allergies?

It might be but I always get them the week of my TOM. It is the only time I get them unless I am really overtired or really stressed.

Huh. Cycle related. I have a rip roaring headache today, but I'm not sure why.

I think it's stress.

Fish trauma. :lmao:

Well I would be stressed too if that happened in my house. My cycle is really messed up lately but I can't go to the dr until the end of August so I am just waiting.
