November 5th 2011 Eastern on the Magic

Hi everyone,

Just saying Hi! I got home a little while ago from Canada. My friend and I had an amazing time, and it was just a perfect weekend! :) We were celebrating each other's birthdays up in Vancouver, which was the reason we went up to Vancouver.

The weather was perfect... blue skies every day!

One thing that was really neat is my friend wanted to buy me a new dress to wear on the cruise for my birthday! So, she found me an awesome dress and so I'm going to wear it on my birthday (in the evening) on the ship!! That is our Palo night, so that will be even more fun!

I read through the posts from the weekend! That was fun. :)

To answer some questions:

1) we have 2nd seating... so we might see all of you who have 2nd seating, but it also depends on the dining room rotation you have. If someone has 2nd seating, but a different dining room rotation, you probably won't see each other much (where you'd most likely see each other is at the show, if you go, at the Walt Disney Theater, or just maybe walking to and from your dining room that evening). But, if you have the same dining room rotation, then likely you'll see each other every night, if you do go to the dining room.

2) checking suitcases vs. carrying-on: I agree with Kathy in that if you plan to get to port and board the ship closer to 11:45 - 12:00, it is kind of a pain to have a bunch of bags/suitcases with you because you can't just set it somewhere on the ship and then leave and come back to get it when your room is ready. You have to just carry it around with youe everywhere, and if you want to do the buffet for lunch, it makes it hard because you have all these bags with you. But, if you are planning to arrive to the ship closer to 1:30 or later, then you should be able to get in your stateroom by then, so you can just go to your stateroom first thing, drop your bags off, and then go explore the ship. So, in that case, it wouldn't be as much of a pain.

I guess the question to ask is are you willing to spend the baggage fees on the plane to make life a little easier and more convenient on the day you board the ship, or would you really rather save that $$ on baggage fees and just deal with carrying your bags around the ship, but then you'd have that extra $$ to spend on something else on the ship. There are a lot of people who carry their bags on the ship, but there are also a lot of people who just check all their bags and have Disney do all the work... so it's really just up to the person, and what is more important to them. :)

3) packing for less than a week, just a week, or more? We always pack for less than a week. We pretty much just bring like 3 - 4 days worth of clothes for each person in our family, and then we do laundry at some point on the ship. We just dont' like to bring a lot with us on vacations, so we just pack light.

For a 7-day cruise, pack 3-4 days worth of shorts, t-shirts, then some pants for each person, long sleeves (for evenings) for each person, the formal wear, then some semi-formal wear, then shoes (for our boys, I bring sandals, tennis shoes, and then a pair of dress shoes, DH brings sandals, dress shoes, and running shoes, I bring running shoes, sandals, and because of my previous ankle injury, I cannot wear high heels now :sad2: , so I just bring a pair of nice dressy flat shoes), then all our pirate outfits, then swim suits (I bring 2 for each person in our family... that way while one is drying out, you can wear another, and just alternate)... then all our toiltries. So, we usually end up doing laundry somewhere right in the middle of the cruise.

Ok, I think that was it...

Well, I hope everyone is doing well and that everyone had a great weekend!!

Kathy

ps. Less than 2 weeks!!!! :dance3:

Danielle,

I absolutely LOOOOVE your FE!!! It turned out SO great! wow! Way to go... I can't wait to see it in person. :thumbsup2

I also love the colors, and the zebra pattern. That is just too cool!

Good job!
Kathy

Switzert: Love all the photos!!!! How many people are in your party all together for the cruise again? I love how the pumpkins came out, too! very cool!! Looks like everyone had fun. :) So, was there a contest for the best or most creatively carved pumpkin? If so, you'll have to post a picture of the winning pumpkin! :)

Kathy

I was shocked how well some of the kids pumpkins turned out! While my DD4 and I made a Jasmine pumpkin. When we got done she was like Daddy that doesn't look like Jasmine, and I was thinking the same thing. My wife gave the the rolling the eyes look.:rolleyes1.

It really did not look like Jasmine at all close up. We set it aside and made something else. We had the Jasmine pumpkin sitting on our deck about 20 feet away and my daughter looks at it again. Daddy, Daddy you fixed it now it looks like Jasmine !!!! I'm like :cool1::thumbsup2! Yep your daddy fixed it.
When all we did was looked at it from further away. Daddy Magic :wizard:
I love when I get credit for doing nothing. :rotfl: It didn't matter she was happy, she had her Jasmine Pumpkin!!!:yay:

Josh's Wolf turned out best, though we were telling him it look like the old cartoon Thundercats Emblem. We kept giving him a hard time about it, but it looked sweet cat or wolf.

Really may make no sense if you never seen the cartoon, we were rolling. :rotfl:

Kathy

There are five in our Party. My DD4 Toree, and my DW Aimee, and I with Josh and Kellie our figurative adopted kids.... Toree is also their figuratively adopted child. So we I guess that being said we are both our daughters parents and grandparents :scared1:. I work with Josh and Kellie works with my wife. We introduced them like 4 years ago.:lovestruc, and now we can't get rid of them.

Here was the Josh made that everyone wanted to see.

Well friends of the disboards, my mother was rooming beside us on the cruise and last night she was lifting a TV and broke one of her veterbrae. She will probably not be going on the cruise. I am not discouraging her of going because of Kathy's (LTR) positive comments about crusing with an injury. However, I don't want her to fall on the ship and have to be flown somewhere. We've even talked about her wearing her flip flops with her evening gown, as I doubt she will be wearing heels. Anyway, we will just have to wait and see. Luckily we had her buy the insurance. Please pray for us!

Oh my goodness! Here's some pixie dust :tink: to help with the recovery!

Mom noticed last night that there's a Palo dinner for two available for Sunday night. I was looking this morning for a party of three, and saw the two-top table is still available. (Just in case someone is looking!)

Sending lots of prayers and pixie dust her way ofr a speedy recovery and hopefully she will feel like coming and just relax and enjoy the view. It is almost 2 weeks yet, so there may be time enough for her to heal to the point she would still be able to come.

Who has a question of the day today??

OH NO!!!!

I DO want to encourage her... please tell her that she can still go on this cruise, and yes, it won't be exactly like she had imagined because she will probably not be able to do some (or a lot) of the things she had planned on, but honestly, I think she will feel better (mentally) going ON the cruise injured and not being able to do much, but still being on the cruise, than staying at home recovering feeling bad she can't be on the cruise.

I have SOOOOO many tips I can provide (if she wants) on how to make this work. I severely injured my ankle on our 7-day Eastern last year, and I wore flip flops with my formal dress!!!! :rotfl: I didn't have a choice!!! But, you know... nobody noticed, and just the fact I got dressed up and looked pretty made the frustrations of my injury not seem so bad. I just sat around the pool with ice on my ankle, and people would ask me what what wrong, and I'd just tell them I hurt myself, adn everyone felt bad... but nobody cared, and honestly, I remember just thinking what a blessing it was that I was on the ship in the Caribbean sitting by the pool in the sun drinking fun drinks than sitting at home with my foot up on the couch. I mean, if you're going to be injured, the best place to recover is on a Disney Cruise ship!

Then, as you know, I fractured my Sacrum (not tailbone, but the big bone right above the tail bone, and I fractured it on the top part of the sacrum, so the fracture was pretty high in my lower back. This time, I was able to get cute ballet flats (with little sparkly things on the shoes) to wear with my formal dress... so maybe your mom can find some really cute flat shoes to wear with her formal dress rather than flip flops. BUT, for my sacral fracture, I was on Perkaset (pain killer) for half of our trip, and I was able to manage the pain by Ibuprofen and Tylenol for the 2nd half of the trip. I had to carry a pillow with me everywhere around the ship because in order to sit down and be comfortable, I needed a pillow to rest my back on. I did feel a little dumb, especially formal and semi-formal nights when I was in this really pretty dress, and then this pillow shoved behind my back! :rotfl: But, in all honesty, I really don't think anyone noticed... I felt like EVERYONE noticed, but I really don't think people did, and if they did notice, then I decided it didn't matter because I needed the pillow to be comfortable. I brought ice packs with me (the gel ice packs) and I asked our stateroom host to bring a bucket of ice to our room every day (sometimes a couple times a day), and I put the gel ice pack in the cooler (fridge, but it's really a cooler), and I poured ice on the gel pack in the cooler so the ice pack would get cold enough, and that is how I had cold enough ice packs to ice my back when I needed to.

If you are flying, here's the BEST tip ever for an injured back (or injured anything).... buy those disposable 1-time use ice packs... the kind that you twist and then they instantly turn cold. THOSE will make it through security without any question because before you break (or twist them) they are not liquid, but it's some sort of freeze dried beads inside the pack. Those totally go through security just fine... the gel packs WILL NOT GO THROUGH secuirty... they will confiscate them! So, since our flight is 6 hours to MCO, I bought about 12 of those disposable ice packs, and put them in my carry-on... they ALL made it through security NO problem, and I just used those on the entire flight. When the ice pack wore off (no longer was cold), I just threw it away, and took out a new one, and twisted it, and it as instantly cold, and INSTANT relief on my back. It was awesome! My orthopedic doctor is who suggested this!

This is what these disposable ice packs are:

http://www.bing.com/shopping/dispos...=0&lpq=disposable+ice+packs&FORM=EGCA&lppc=16

You find them in the first aid section of your local drug store... they are cheap... I bought a pack of 3 for like $5.00. I would buy some of those, and use those for your trip to Orlando.... even if you are driving, still get them because they are disposable and she can just throw them away when she's done with it.

Oh, I so hope she decides to go!! I know it seems devastating, and it probably seems like the cruise is ruined, but it isn't!!! She just needs to understand that she can just relax, and the stateroom host, and all the other CM's on the ship will help her SOOOOO much if they know about her injury. It's amazing, and there is a whole ER on the ship, too, if she feels like things are getting worse... she can go there and have them check her out. They even have an xray machine (I know, they used it on me!!). She can even request a wheel chair, if she is afraid of falling, although, depending on which vertibrae it is she broke, a wheel chair may not be comfortable... I know for my sacral fracture, a wheel chair would have been painful. It was more comfortable for me to stand than to sit.

She can take elevators, only, have her hold on to all the railings (that is what I did) going up and down the stairs. Ask the stateroom host for extra pillows so she can use them when she sleeps to protect her back, or prop her body a certain way so sleeping is more comfortable (I did that... they gave me extra pillows no problem when I told them about my back injury).

I think the ship is probably the best place for her to be!!!! It's just the traveling to and from part that could be tricky, but use the ice packs, allow PLENTY of time to get from point A to point B, and she will do fine!!

Feel free to PM me anytime if you need more tips or encouragememt on this. Seriously, if anyone knows how to be injured on a ship, it is me!! And, I still had amazing cruises!!!! Just had to change my mind-set a little, is all.

Take care and I hope she is doing OK!

Who has a question of the day today??

Kathy

Oh my goodness, I can't believe you leave this week!!! What day do you leave?? I am SO excited... I can't believe we leave next week!! wow!!! It is amazing to even say that. :)

hmmmm... question of the day...

Here is a non-Disney question:
What is your favorite hobby?

For me, I guess most of you know this already... I love to run. :) But, for another hobby... I really enjoy planning things. I LOVE to plan events, parties, vacations, you name it. I love organizing, too.

-Kathy

This is awful, but my favorite hobby is shopping! I also like to plan trips. DH just told me this weekend that he wanted just the 2 of us to go to DW for our anniversary in May.

By the way, thanks for all of the encouraging words to my mom. I have shared them and she is keeping positive through them. Will update you all after her appointment today.

I would say Baking and Cruising Disney :goodvibes

I have been cooking and baking since I was old enough to stand on a chair to reach the counter. I baked bread, brownies and some cookies all by myself by age 6.

I still bake but now I bake healthier. Sugar free and low fat. I keep tweeking my original receipes to make them healthy but still keep the great original flavors. It can take me a couple of years of experimenting to get it right and some cant be made as good so I just create a new receipe and forget about the old one.:thumbsup2

I like to scrapbook our vacations too.

Kathy

Kathy,

We leave here late afternoon on friday. We need to drop the dogs at the dog sitter which is a 90 minute drive from home but on the way to the airport.
Then we will drive( another 70 minutes) to about 2 miles from PDX (Portland airport) and spend the night at a Howard Johnsons where we will leave our truck for the trip and we will take their 4 a.m. shuttle to the airport for a 6 a.m. flight to Orlando on saturday.
I think we arrive around 6 P.M. Florida time. Then we are taking the Magical Express to The All Star music resort. First time staying there.

Then Nov 5th we catch the cruise line us at our resort to take us to the port!!!
