OK, time to share. Not all of TCD's competitions on the
DCL have resulted in hardware. Last year, TCD and oldest DD were matched for a family competition in Diversions. The idea of it was to see how well the children knew the parents and vice versa. The host picks competitors based on how much noise the table they are seated at can make. TCD girls are very good at this. I have a friend who has three sons. He has observed that the TCD girls can make your eardrums explode with their screaming. It is true. I have observed that his sons pound on each other like cave men, and climb on things that are not designed for such purposes. Viva la difference. Anyway, I digress. Ok, so surprise of surprises, the host picks the TCD table to send a pair into the competition. The family selects TCD and oldest DD. There are four or five other teams. The parents are sent out of the room, and the kids are asked questions. Questions like, how old is your father/mother, who is their favorite music group, what is their favorite dessert, who is their favorite Disney Character, etc. The parents are brought back in. The host asks the questions, the parents give an answer, and the host then reveals what the child said. Lots of fun! Well, TCD and DD match on the age, dessert, and Disney Character questions, no problem. The other contestants are not doing so good. We have a high maintenance mother whose daughter doesn't know her age, we have a funny African American guy, whose child gave the correct age, but who forgot how old he was. The crowd is loving it. TCD isn't getting any laughs, because his answers match. OK, now comes the "who is your parent's favorite music group question." TCD doesn't know what to say. He listens to a lot of talk radio, and also to Contemporary Christian Music, but DD isn't in to this, and isn't going to know a group. TCD decides to go for the big laughs. "Vanilla Ice" I say. The crown erupts-very funny! DD's answer was Michael W. Smith (Christian music artist). The other parents get their answers right. It all goes downhill from there. The high maintenance mom and daughter win. No hardware for the TCD family. I still have not lived it down. DD had never heard of Vanilla Ice. When we get home, she downloads Ice, Ice, Baby, and burns a CD for my car. It is now our family theme song. It actually is a pretty good song.
If they have another contest like this in Diversions this year, watch out for us. We will be the team to beat.
