November 18, 2012 ~ Turkey day on the Wonder

You're welcome
I agree Oct 1st is a good cut off but it is always hard to say no. Maybe you could say no to FE part and just encourage to come to meet and greet if people ask to join after then?
That meet and greet plan looks outstanding! Thanks Double Trouble!pixiedust:
Last time we did FE we gave one cabin FE gift and then one for each of the kids but the kids were mostly young (under 6) and easy to please! Should we plan for the same thing this time?

Most people like to have a cut off date for the FE gift exchange so they can get all their ducks in a row and plan out their gifts. Me, it doesn't matter so much as I don't think that all the gifts have to be the same. If someone wants to join the FE gift exchange 1 week before the cruise, I can get them a gift. It may not be the same gift as everyone else, but they will have a gift and it won't be candy. But some people order their supplies based on the numbers and that is fine too.

It is up to you how you arrange the number of gifts, ie. 1 per person, 1 per cabin; 1 per child; 1 per couple...whatever you feel comfortable with. The FE gift exchange list is below above my signature. Ideas and suggestions are always welcome.

The only rule we have established is no candy please unless it is a specialty candy and we do have a FE participant that has food allergies so no consumables is probably the best rule. Being so close to Halloween, I don't think we all want to exchange left over Halloween candy bags. I would suggest that if you have extra Halloween candy and you can bring it, leave it in your stateroom for your room steward or if you have kids in the club...their counselors will LOVE the candy.

EVERYONE is encouraged to come to the meet and greets! EVERYONE PLEASE COME. The meet and greet is for EVERYONE. You do not have to be participating in the FE gift exchange to come. If you are in fthe FE gift exchange and there are room changes, that info can be shared at the meet and greet and the info will be posted on one of my doors. DoubleTrouble has arranged several different meets wherewe can get together. The full list is on page one. Let's talk about the meets that we would like to attend.

I will be at:
1. The cruise terminal meet. Did this last April...lots of people to hook up with and close to the kids registration and Mickey/Minnie photos. A very comfortable area to wait for boarding.
2. Onboard After Boarding: 3:00pm in the Promenade Lounge, Deck 3, Port Side
3. Tastings
4. Monday (Sea Day) - Adults: TBD in the Outlook Cafe, Deck 10 just aft of the adult pool area, off the midship elevators. I got side tracked last time on this one.

As we are getting closer to this cruise I'm getting more excited! Dh and I were just sitting out on the porch...with our jackets on! In August! This has been the strangest summer weather in a long time.

Happy Blue Moon!

Linda

ok and for the fe the kids are katie the DD and alex the DS we will do the magnets

My DD9s are kicking off emailing with sranes' DD10 today.

If there are others with DDs in the 8-10 age range (or anywhere close to that) that would like to join in and get to know some of the other kids before the cruise, please send me a PM and I'll have my girls email them as well.

No pressure, but can be fun to "break the ice" before they meet in person.

If you have kids in other age groups that are interested, either post or PM the applicable DISers to get them set up as well. I think I read already some of the older kids are going to correspond.

Take care and enjoy the Labor Day Weekend! And, don't forget to pay for your cruise if you haven't already...I think the last day is Tuesday.

Excitement is building!!! :yay::dance3::cool1:

Just wanted to share some of our lessons learned and answer some FAQs for those wondering. One thing I've learned on these Disney cruises is that I'm still learning! So, if you have any other tips (or if I got it wrong), please post them.

Time Zones: For this cruise, everyone will be on STANDARD time, not Daylight time. Obviously, LA will be on Pacific Time (PST). Cabo will be on Mountain Time (MST) and PV will be on Central Time (MST). However, what is most important is SHIP's TIME. Here's how it "normally" works this time of year...

On Monday night, the Navigator will direct you to set your clocks FORWARD ONE HOUR, which puts the SHIP on MST. But, when we go to PV on Wednesday, the SHIP TIME does NOT roll forward again to CST (local time in PV). So, usually when we are in PV, SHIP TIME is one hour earlier than SHORE TIME (in this case, PV time). Why is this important? If you are booking a tour on your own, you need to make sure you clarify what "TIME" it is (i.e., if your self-booked tour is on local PV time, say 9am, that is 8am SHIP TIME, so don't be late!). Tours booked through Disney are on SHIP TIME, so no worries. And, if the SHIP is leaving at say 5pm, that's 5pm SHIP TIME (6pm in PV). To be safe, ask Guest Services if you have any questions. We don't want to sail away without you!

From there through Cabo, the SHIP stays on MST, so when we are in Cabo, SHIP time and LOCAL time are the SAME (easy peasy lemon squeezy)! When we sail back to LA, the SHIP changes back to PST (clocks BACK on hour...extra sleep!!) on either Friday or Saturday night as posted in the Navigator. Got it??

Money: We have never had any issue using US Dollars in Mexico; however, you may get a slightly better rate in Pesos if you're so inclined. You can use ATMs in Mexico (be smart), but probably want to let your bank know you are travelling there so they don't lock down your card. Same goes for credit cards. Most banks charge an internation exchange rate fee to your transaction so don't be surprised when you get home and see that if you use your credit card (e.g., mine is 1%). Bottom line is US $ are generally fine. FYI, current rate is approx 13.2 pesos to the dollar, or about 7.5 cents per peso.

There are no cash transactions on the ship. You put a credit card on your shipboard account and then charge with your KTTW card as you go...even in the stores.

Bringing Beverages: Disney has a fairly liberal policy regarding bringiing your own beverages on board. Check out their web site for the most current info, but we usually bring a few bottles of wine in our carry ons (not allowed in checked bags; and they may charge you corkage in the dining rooms) and we check a case of water (although the water on the ship is excellent). You may want to bring individual water containers for shore excursions if you don't bring your own water. DCLs is not cheap. Fountain Soda is FREE on DCL, as well as coffee, tea, and hot cocoa (24 hours a day on Deck 9 aft). If you want cans, you have to pay. We've also bought a case of beer at Walmart in PV and brought it on board...no problems. Don't spread this too far around...I don't want DCL cutting it off.

Departure Port: I hear it's different in Florida, but in LA I have NEVER seen them check your "arrival" time you signed up for on-line. So, if you're a little early, don't stress over it. If you want to avoid the crowds (they're not that bad), you can come a bit later, but don't forget the MEETUPS! Remember, it's the Port of LOS ANGELES or SAN PEDRO, NOT Long Beach.

Parking is easy at the port if you choose to do so. Just do a drive by to drop your bags on the curb with the porters, then spin back around to park. Very close and easy. The porters work for the port, not DCL, so we tip them appropriately. Don't check anything you may need before dinner or critical items (meds, ID, check-in docs), and don't hesitate to carry on bathing suits, etc.

That's it in a nutshell....questions welcome. More to follow when I have time. If you have other tips, please share.

:cool1:

All this information is super helpful! I am looking forward to meeting everyone. As for the FE list, my preference is for a cut-off date because I want to make sure I have enough time to make my FE gifts. Like Linda, I can make something at the last minute if there are latecomers, but it would likely be a different gift and I would feel bad about it. Not that it would be worse, only different. October 1st seems like a reasonable deadline to me.

Starting to get excited! I just did online check-in:thumbsup2
Thanks for all the tips. This is our first cruise so I'm making note of all the expertise around here:goodvibes We are going to be staying at DL Resort prior to cruise. Does anyone like a breakfast spot that won't break the bank? How are the restaurants in Downtown Disney?

Forgot to mention that I love the cruise logo! Thanks Sranes for designing such a cute logo. :yay:

Lol, I finally made final payment today and I did my online check also. I was surprised that there was still 11:00 a.m. check in! My sis is arranging our Palo Brunch. That is our favorite meal. We won't be booking a Palo dinner. All we are booking through Disney is Palo Brunch. On our own for everything else.

I've never had breakfast at Downtown Disney so I don't even know if there are restaurants open for breakfast but I am sure that there is. I'm sure someone will chime in about DTD. I have had the character breakfast in DL though. That said, there is an IHop and a Denny's within walking distance of the S. Harbor entrance to the parks, which is the general area where I usually stay. I'd stay away from the all you can eat breakfast buffets that surround the area but that is my opinion. Not that the food wouldn't necessarily be good but there is a greater chance of you picking up a flu bug from someone who has unknowingly left one behind for you whether it be on the salad dressing ladle or a kid coughing on the strawberries. Being sick and quarantined on the ship would not make for a good trip .

Getting excited! Planning out my FE gifts for this cruise...finishing the FE gifts for the Pacific Coast Pixar cruise that DH and I are taking without the kids! Whoot whoot! Thankfully Goofys_Gal is helping us out on this. It will be the 2nd time in 29 years that the 2 of us have taken a trip for more than a night or 2 without a child in tow.

Disney use to have a Romance package where you got 2 robes and, I think, a bottle of Brut champagne or something like that. I want the robes, lol. We keep DCL robes in our vacation home in Florida but don't have any here! DH and I plan on spending a lot of time in the pool and spa while on board, just as we did on our last MR. I've sent DCL a message asking about the robes for purchase as 2 single robes or in a package type of deal. Waiting for them to get back to me. I now wonder if you can check them out of the spa and use them for the duration? I know you have a set in the Roy and Walt suites for use or perhaps in all of concierge? Doesn't matter, I'd like to get a pair.

To me, this entire summer has been so strange weather wise. Raining in July, very few 100+ temps here which I think is unusual. I'm hoping that this will have some effect on the "normal" whale migration since whales don't know calendars. From what I've read, prime whale watching is from December through March. I would really like to experience another whale siting. I love sea life. There were quite a few people who said that they saw sea turtles while we were out to sea down south. I didn't see any though.

Okay then... I'll sign off and everyone have a great evening!

Linda

We often just hit up the Main Street Bakery (now the Jolly Holiday Bakery) for breakfast if we're going into the parks. The La Brea bakery in DTD is also *very* good and not too pricey. We tend to shy away from Denny's and IHOP but there's also a Mimi's Cafe on Harbor a bit toward Ball Rd. Quiche and mimosas for breakfast, and at reasonable prices! :)

If you're staying at the Disneyland Hotel itself, Tongoroa Terrace has breakfast and I've heard good things about it.

If you're in California Adventure, a lot of people like the Pacific Wharf Cafe (huge portions) for breakfast. Or Whitewater Snacks just inside the Grand Californian.

Some of the menus are available on this site, but most of the time I just use... another... site for menus that seems to be updated far more regularly. PM me if you don't know which site. ;)

Hope this helps a little.

We got our check in today for 11:30. We are doing Palo Brunch on Tuesday I think. Cool about your alone time trip. We are meeting with the wine tour on 9/13 with a Pixar cruise next week already. Still so excited for our cruise. Love the Logo! DH went shopping for FE gifts already. Susan, 15 1/2 will be shocked if I can just keep it all under wraps. Tommy, 13 will probably not be surprised. We shall see. DH and I are interested in doing a lot of tastings too. See ya all real soon.

Get to the terminal a little early to do the terminal meetup that DoubleTrouble has arranged. We will be there early also. It's a great location to sit and relax, close to the character pictures, club registration and the terminal big screen.

As to Palo, per text messages from Goofys_Gal, our ressie is at 10:30...and I think it is on Tuesday also.

Are you going on one of the Pixar cruises also? Or are you taking a Pixar wine tour?

Linda

I asked this in the main cruise forum, but I will ask here too, because I know some of you have been to this port before.

Hi,

My husband and I have sailed before and were able to checked in a few weeks ago and chose a 12:30 arrival time. The kids (21, 16, and 15) had not sailed before and are in a separate room on their own reservation number. When I checked them in over the weekend the only option available for arrival was 3:30. I called Disney and asked if they could get us together on the same arrival time and the rep. did some checking and said they aren't able to change that.

So the question is, is it possible they will let the kids arrive at 12:30 with us? This is their first cruise and I really want them to be able to get on the boat as soon as possible and enjoy it as much as we did when we went.

If we have to wait we will, but thought I would ask those who have been there and done that.

Thanks,
Patti

Hi Patti,

I'm stumped as to why the arrival time would be 3:30 when the ship is only at 50% capacity.

I do know this, they will not be turned away if they arrive with you at 12 noonish. We have sailed out of 3 different ports on Disney since they implemented the "arrival time" schedule and I have not been stopped or questioned about arriving earlier than they were expecting me. ;)

Disney implemented this system when the Dream came out and there were literally hundreds of people arriving at one time making for long wait lines to check in. Disney is the master at crowd control and flow and this is how they prevent 100's of people showing at one time. If you all arrive at 12:00 noonish, your wait before you board the ship will be a short one.

DH and I are just meeting up at the port for the wine tour. Are you going also?

I think our Palo reservation is at 10:30 too. How exciting. We will plan to get to the terminal early for sure in order to meet up with everyone. I will not be able to sleep. I am already giddy with anticipation.

Oh I see...you are meeting the ship in San Francisco and going on the wine tour. Now that's novel. How did you get that arranged? I'm thinking you might know John Lasseter? He's one of the speakers on that sailing and I believe that is his winery where the tour is taking place.

No, we are not going on the Wine tour. Even though we lived on Treasure Island for many years, there are still many things we have not done there. I will be doing Alcatraz for the first time, lol.

Where are you staying the night before? Goofys_gal is trying to get us all to go to DL the day before so we would be staying near the park and then parking at the port. She cannot go over the grapevine without a stop to DL. :lmao:

Your giddiness must be contangious...I think I've got some giddy too!

Linda

Thanks Adnil530. That makes me feel better.

On another note, I was looking at the DCL website last night and noticed that you can now chose inside staterooms if you are shopping for this cruise. When my family made the switch because of our move to California there were no inside stateroom available. No idea what it means, just noticed since we would have liked an inside stateroom to save a little money on the switch.

I checked Cruisefish and it says our ship is completely full. I am curious if the difference is because people dropped out after the paid-in-full date and cruisefish hasn't caught up.

Anyway, just noticing and was curious what everyone else thought. I guess I am curious about just how full the ship is going to be etc.

Thanks,
Patti
