November 18, 2012 ~ Turkey day on the Wonder

I asked this in the main cruise forum, but I will ask here too, because I know some of you have been to this port before.

Hi,

My husband and I have sailed before and were able to checked in a few weeks ago and chose a 12:30 arrival time. The kids (21, 16, and 15) had not sailed before and are in a separate room on their own reservation number. When I checked them in over the weekend the only option available for arrival was 3:30. I called Disney and asked if they could get us together on the same arrival time and the rep. did some checking and said they aren't able to change that.

So the question is, is it possible they will let the kids arrive at 12:30 with us? This is their first cruise and I really want them to be able to get on the boat as soon as possible and enjoy it as much as we did when we went.

If we have to wait we will, but thought I would ask those who have been there and done that.

Thanks,
Patti

Patti,

I know Linda already answered you as well, and like she said, I wouldn't worry about it. From our experience, you can show up whenever you want. Here's how it works in San Pedro with Disney...

1. Check you bags on the curb with the porters. Don't check anything critical (passports, meds, etc).

Note: The Wonder will be at Berth 93 (to your left) but you must drive all the way around (counterclockwise) starting to your right to get to it. The Crystal Symphony will be sharing the Port with us on the 18th and 25th but they'll be at Berth 92 wit its own check in area. Yes, I know it's nice but don't get on the wrong ship! There might be a bit more activity since there are 2 ships in but it's no big deal.

2. Walk up to the main entry to the terminal. The agents will check your paperwork there to let you in (the forms you printed on Disney's web site). They may also ask for your passports just to verify you have them. They will direct you upstairs (elevator/escalator). Note: Your group needs to enter together, or each have their own copy of the paperwork! The agents will also give you a sheet with the highlights of the remainder of that day (kind of like a mini-Navigator).

3. As soon as you get upstairs, there is a table to your left where you must fill out a quick form verifying no one in your party is "sick".

4. You take that form, plus your documents and passports, and get in line either to the left set of counters if you are a first time Disney cruiser, or to the right set of counters if you are a Castaway Club member. If you are Concierge level, you're check in is to the far right.

5. At the counter, they will check your docs/ID, reconfirm your stateroom assignment(s), take your photo for your Key to the World (KTTW) card (it's your room key and what you use for charging things on the ship, as well as going ashore and reboarding...along with a photo ID for those 18 and over).

FYI, your KTTW card has the following info printed on it: your name, "A" for adult or "M" for minor, your Castaway Club member number (if it's your first time...you're now a member!), your dining time, rotation and table assignment (e.g., 5:45 PM, PTAPTAP, Table 56), and in large bold print a letter that represents your lifeboat muster station (e.g., "R"...that's where you go for the lifeboat drill or in a real emergency...there is a map on the inside of your stateroom door). For those in your party who you did not allow "charging" privileges (e.g., young children), there will be "NC" in the lower corner as well. You stateroom number is NOT on the card, so no one can sneak into your cabin if lose it. You can get extra cards from Guest Services as needed.

6. If you want to pay for an upgrade at the port, you can check with the supervisor desk at the left end of the Castaway Club check in counter. If they have any cabins available (this ship is pretty full as I understand), they use a little matrix to determine how much it will cost to upgrade say from a 9C to a 5B, or whatever. Then it's up to you if you want to pay for the upgrade. If you do, remember to let us know at the meetup (to update the FE list), and know that although they say your luggage will manage to get there on its own (and maybe it will in due time), I've usually had to go to our original cabin and either get our bags or let the room stewards know your new cabin number so they can deliver them.

7. Once all that's done (don't worry...it's very simple), you walk to your right and go through security into the waiting area. As you approach, they give you a card with a number on it that represents your boarding group. Concierge gets groups 1 & 2, so even if you get their early (as we usually do) you will get Group 3 at best. Boarding usually starts between 12-12:30, but it can vary based on how long it takes to get the ship cleared of arriving passengers and get the computers reset for our trip. They will call boarding groups by number when the time comes. You can use one card for your whole party, so if you show up at the terminal at different times you can still board together.

TIP: Although there are snack/drink machines in the waiting area, you may want to bring your own bottles of water/soda/whatever and maybe a few snacks to enjoy prior to beginning your 7-day feeding frenzy aboard. And, yes, there are bathrooms as well.

8. Now it's time to find our meetup group (far right corner by the big TV...look for the "DIS" signs) and hang out until boarding. At some point (11:30-12:00 or so), the counter will open for getting the bracelets for your kids going to the Oceaneer's Club/Lab. You can also do this onboard, so don't sweat it if the line is long and you don't want to wait. You should have checked your kids in already on-line (if not, you still have time!) but you need to get the bracelet.

TIP: The bracelets are CLUNKY (like a big wristwatch) and some kids find them uncomfortable (they use them so they can electronically "scan" your kids into/out of the club/lab). Use discretion as they charge $50 if you lose them (and $200 if you lose the "wavephone"...there are 2 in each cabin...kind of like cell phones that only work on the ship); but here's what we do. Cut the band off and store the device in a safe place until the kids want to go to the lab/club. The CMs will print a new band and reattach the device when the kids go in. Another reason to take them off is they can ruin an otherwise perfect family photo (like on formal night). Ultimately it's up to you.

9. Very shortly thereafter, Mickey and Minnie will show up for preboarding photos just to the right of the kids counter (and very close to our terminal meetup area).

10. Finally, after ceremoniously boarding the "family of the day", they begin boarding with concierge (1, 2) and then in numerical order after that. We've always been in Group 3 but others have told us it goes pretty fast. If you arrive later on, I imagine you could pretty much go straight through. Then, the magic begins as you walk a few ramps (and pass through another family photo op) before strolling into the main atrium where the CMs "announce" your family's arrival to the ship.

Wow...is it November yet!?! pixiedust::banana::beach::dance3:party::drinking1:jumping1::dancer::rainbow:

Thanks Adnil530. That makes me feel better.

On another note, I was looking at the DCL website last night and noticed that you can now chose inside staterooms if you are shopping for this cruise. When my family made the switch because of our move to California there were no inside stateroom available. No idea what it means, just noticed since we would have liked an inside stateroom to save a little money on the switch.

I checked Cruisefish and it says our ship is completely full. I am curious if the difference is because people dropped out after the paid-in-full date and cruisefish hasn't caught up.

Anyway, just noticing and was curious what everyone else thought. I guess I am curious about just how full the ship is going to be etc.

Thanks,
Patti

On the 2 cruises sailing before us, DCL has already announced VGT rates which are the same rates that I paid for an 11a:scared1:. Cheap for a verhandah. I will ok in an 11a but hope that we can upgrade at least our room to have some light.

I've been checking cruisefish regularly myself and what I see is that we are at 55% capacity with 45% available. :confused3 I'm new to that site so perhaps I am confused on how to read it. Yesterday I thought we were at 50%. Pretty guaranteed though if they offer VGT rates for what they are on the 11/11 & 11/4...we will sail full.

Linda

Thank you Double Trouble. We have been on one other cruise, but it was just my husband and I two years ago from Port Canaveral, so I really appreciate all the information.

Thank you very much!

Oh I see...you are meeting the ship in San Francisco and going on the wine tour. Now that's novel. How did you get that arranged? I'm thinking you might know John Lasseter? He's one of the speakers on that sailing and I believe that is his winery where the tour is taking place.

No, we are not going on the Wine tour. Even though we lived on Treasure Island for many years, there are still many things we have not done there. I will be doing Alcatraz for the first time, lol.

Where are you staying the night before? Goofys_gal is trying to get us all to go to DL the day before so we would be staying near the park and then parking at the port. She cannot go over the grapevine without a stop to DL. :lmao:

Your giddiness must be contangious...I think I've got some giddy too!

Linda

Cool that John Lasseter will be speaking on the ship. I have never met him personally, but we have seen him at Disney events. Heard through the gravevine about the tour before we knew it was attached to the cruise line. Do not think we get to go to the Lasseter Winery after all, as our group got a little large. But we are still going to Diane Disney Milller's winery and to the winery of Rich Frank of Lion King and Alddin, Cheers....We also get to see Pollyanna's house and the Charles Shultz museum. Like you, we live nearby, but never have gone to these places. Alas, we will have to drive down to the port for the day passing wine country on the way. But an adventure is always fun.

Questions:
1. Do most people have a passport or just i.d. and birth certificate? I believe a passport is a good idea, my partner thinks its a waste of money.
2. Disney released OGT and VGT rates for the cruise after ours...do you think they'll announce VGT for ours?
3. I made a ressie for Palo at 12:30 on Tuesday. Do you think this is a good time to go??? Can I cancel if there is something else I want to go to at that time?:confused3

Hi Pixielizzie,

1. We travel with passports. I want to have passports on hand just in case we go somewhere where we HAVE to have them.

2. I saw that also. I was surprised that they didn't announce VGT rates for our cruise also :confused3 That's okay with me. I'm hoping to upgrade at port and with a full boat, that won't happen :rotfl:

3. I believe the rule is that you must cancel Palo by 8 p.m. the night before your reservation. If you do not or if you do not show, you will be charged as if you did attend. I would double check what the cancellation policy is once you are on board. I cannot remember what kind of activities they have during the lunch hour. Perhaps DoubleTrouble will chime in as he has done this trip many times.

1, Typically, an exception exists where passports are not required for "closed-loop" cruises (departing and returning from/to the same US port); however, if you have to fly to Mexico to join the cruise late or get stuck in Mexico for some reason (medical, miss the ship, etc) you nust have a passport to fly down/home. Therefore, most all travel industry professionals strongly recommend you have a passport for travel outside the US (see quote below). Please do your own research to determine exactly what is required (and maybe call DCL), but just realize there are some limitations if you do not have a passport. Personally, I wouldn't leave the US without one. They're good for 10 years (adults) and after this cruise, there is a good chance you may want to travel/cruise elsewhere.

Disney Cruise Line Passport Information

Guests are responsible for obtaining proper documentation to board the ship. U.S. Government passport requirements continue to change; therefore, we strongly encourage Guests of all ages to have a valid U.S. passport for all cruises. Having a passport allows you to always be prepared to travel wherever you wish, and offers an added measure of security when you're traveling.

2. Ship seems pretty full from what I can tell so doubtful (but who knows?).

3. You can change Palo reservations while onboard, as early as right after boarding (go to Wavebands to modify all dining issues), and as late as 2pm for dinner the day of (they don't specify a time for brunch). You can also go to Palo anytime they are open and check availability/make changes. Just don't wait to last minute to cancel/no-show or they will charge you the $20.

Hope that helps!

I'm on my way to the post office to mail my passport renewal application and Elaine will apply at the library tomorrow!!
You're right double trouble, whenever you leave the U.S. you should have it!;)
Linda, I want to upgrade at the port too! pixiedust:We have an 11C GTY right now. So tempted to go ahead and book a veranda but that would double the price of the trip. :crazy2:
Ok, good to know about Palo! For some reason I thought I had to cancel before the ship sailed. Maybe I'm thinking of port adventures??? I don't have any of those booked.
Anybody travelling with pesos? I have a few and was thinking of getting some more.:scratchin

Okay, I finally got the info on cruisefish. The % shown represents the % of categories available and has nothing to do with capacity. Right now it shows 50%. There are 12 different categories available. 12 categories, including the GT's, are not available. I got it.

Yep...can't wait for this cruise. Never anticipated Thanksgiving as much as I have this year, lol.

Linda

54 days!!!:rotfl:
I got our room assignment!
stateroom 2548:cool1:
Linda can you add it to FE list?
Thank you!
I forgot to add that we will be celebrating Elaine's 40th bday on this cruise:banana:

Awsome and done! Were you GTY? They assigned your cabin early? I am traveling gty for the Panama cruise, waiting for our assignment. I thought they did it about 30 days out. I'll need to start checking on that!

Leaving for our Pixar cruise soon! Getting very excited!

Linda:cool1:

Linda,

Got our cabins off GTY as well. We'll be in 2518 and 2520. Our first time in the bow (I need the exercise anyway)!

I wish we could join you on the Pixar...just couldn't make it work. Saving for the Med next summer. If you're on with CasaMartinez, she's a friend of ours...you'll love her. Have an awesome time! Maybe you can confirm the dates for when they are putting up holiday decorations(?). Hate to see summer fading away, but at least we're closer to T-Day!

Anyway, thanks for updating the FE list. pirate:

We were 11C GTY!!! I feel like I won the lottery! :rotfl2:We debated every possible room category and in the end went with the cheapest!
I'm excited for your Pixar cruise! That's gonna be awesome! How lucky are you?:worship:

Posting for Adnil510 who is right this second enjoying the first full day of her Pixar cruise. I am just a little bit  that I'm not there too...but her kids are :furious: But I'm truly happy for them (for those who don't know - Adnil is my sis - my OLDER sis..tee hee)

This is the LAST CALL for FE sign ups...please post before Friday if you haven't done so already and wish to join in on the fun. Linda will make the updates to the list when she returns.

Now that I can say "I'm cruising with Mickey NEXT MONTH" I'm getting excited :cheer2: I don't know how often the pixie dust is really cast out, but I would LOVE, LOVE LOVE an upgrade (like everyone else, I'm sure).

Pixielizzie - I'm not well versed in the categories...so you bought 11C and what is it that you got??

Hi Everyone! My family is hoping to join you for this Thanksgiving cruise. My husband gave me permission to make reservations IF Disney offers an IGT rate. I am trying to not get my hopes up since it is probably unlikely that this will happen. I was wondering if any of you know how much the IGT rate was for this sailing? Were any of you lucky enough to snag that rate previously?
