Hi DISers,
Here's a list I compiled in anticipation of my January WDW trip. I hope it helps some of you plan your non-park hours! Check times on shows/tours - don't know if the hours listed here are accurate. I'm looking forward to doing some of these on arrival and departure day:cool1:!!!

*Disney Transportation: Ride the monorail, two loops (resort and Epcot). Stop to visit any resorts you want. Or take Disney Transportation boat rides, from MK to Wilderness Lodge, or between Downtown Disney and Port Orleans/Riverside or Old Key West Resort. Ask the boat captains if they have trading cards or stickers.

*Rent a bike at Villas at Wilderness Lodge, bike over to Fort Wilderness on a nicely paved path. Visit the horse stable (the horses from the parades!).

*At Animal Kingdom Lodge go to Boma (restaurant) for a free tour. Wilderness Lodge, Grand Floridian and Yacht Club also sometimes offer free tours – some require a reservation so inquire in advance.

*Visit a Butterfly Garden. There are two – at Contemporary Resort, on the left side as you walk out the back of the lobby towards the pool and lake, and at Fort Wilderness, outside the Outpost. Call the Gardening Hotline (407) 938 – 3900 for more info.

*Chip 'n Dale's Campfire Sing-along nightly at Fort Wilderness Campground, at 7or 8pm. Free (can purchase S'mores kit).

*Non-character campfire/sing-alongs at Port Orleans Riverside and Animal Kingdom Lodge. S'mores kids also available for purchase!

*See Yehaa Bob perform at Port Orleans Riverside (Wed – Sat), or hear a show of Jazz music by Elliot Dyson at Port Orleans French Quarter (Wed – Sat).

*Watch the animals at Animal Kingdom Lodge, especially in the late afternoon just before sunset.

*Go to a free drawing class at the Art of Animation Resort, daily at 11am, 2pm, and 5pm.

*Sit in a hammock on the beach at the Polynesian Resort and watch the Electric Light Parade (check schedule for what nights it happens) and watch the fireworks over the castle. The music is piped in for the fireworks!

*Chocolate: Ghiradelli often hands out free chocolate samples – Downtown Disney.

*Have fun at the playing tables at the Lego store or at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney.

*Take pictures with all the amazing Lego sculptures and the other Disney statues around Downtown Disney.

*There is a geyser that erupts at the Wilderness Lodge down by the boat dock.

*Take a free Disney Vacation Club tour (timeshare) and get free ice cream at the end. The tour lasts around 2 hours. You might also get a free gift card and/or free fast passes for the parks.

*Hang out at your resort pool, read on your balcony, go to the arcade or fitness center.

*Walk around the Boardwalk area, especially at night.

*Watch outdoor movies at the resorts at night. Check which resorts and what time.

ENJOY:goodvibes!

I need more of these! Thinking about a family trip to Orlando over Christmas next year and would want to do non park things instead of fighting level 10 crowds all day.

In the evenings at AKL, there are night-vision goggles to use for savanna viewing.

The afternoon restaurant tours at AKL also include Jiko.

What a great list thanks: for posting this I am sure it will help a lot of people.:cool1:

Yee-haw Bob was at Riverside when we went last September. And he is Wonderful!!!!

Now if only I could say that I've DONE all these things! One daypixiedust:
(please add anything else - we can make it the most complete list on the DISboards!)

Yeah I think he's always there, not POFQ. He is awesome! :goodvibes

POR (and I think POFQ too) also offer boat, bike and surrey rentals. Not sure on the prices though...

Also most resorts offer free activities around their pools - bingo, pool parties, trivia etc.

One of our favorites.....boat rides. We love to park at Wilderness Lodge and take the boat too Ft. Wilderness for lunch. If the weather is nice and the boats are not crowded, we often make the full circle between Ft. Wilderness, the Contemporary, and Wilderness Lodge 4 or 5 times. Relaxing and beautiful.

Also the boats from the Poly to MK and back.

Thanks:thumbsup2! Corrected it on the list!

Planning a trip without parks so I wanted to bookmark this (and Thank You!).

Does anyone have any updated recommendations for this list? We are not going to the parks on our check-in day and I originally thought we might eat at Ohana and watch the electrical water pageant on the beach. 1. I worry the construction might be an issue at Poly and 2. Would any of the other resorts have a good viewing area for the water pageant, or the fireworks after?

Thanks for sharing! We are doing our first ever parks- free trip in August. I'm hoping to enjoy some of these for the first time.

We like to visit other resorts - there are so many different forms of transport to get you there too - Friendship boats to Y&BC/Boardwalk/Swan & Dolphin, river ferry boats from DTD to Saratoga Springs, Old Key West & Port Orleans (Riverside & French Quarter), Monorails to Grand Floridian, Polynesian & Contemporary, boats to Wilderness Lodge, Fort Wilderness, etc. I try to plan our evening meals at resorts (mixture of table service & counter service), as you can take your time exploring - alot of resorts have extra activities too, whether it is watching a movie, sitting by a campfire or hiring a bike/surrey bike - there's always lots to do.

Great ideas!! Question though...if we ride the monorail to Epcot...can you actually walk to any resorts near there?

don't think you can walk to any resort from Epcot - you can get a boat from Epcot to the Yacht & Beach Club, Boardwalk, Swan & Dolphin though (from the World Showcase international gateway - between France & UK). The Magic Kingdom monorail stops at Polynesian, Grand Floridian & Contemporary. The Epcot monorail only goes between the TTC & Epcot I think?

The only way to walk from Epcot to one of the resorts is to go through Epcot and out the international gateway.
