Is it possible to rent from a DVC owner and not be a member? And if it is, how do you figure out the price for rent? Thanks!
PS FYI: My family of 10 stayed in 3 rooms at the POFQ in 2005 for 6 nights in Dec. Trying to figure out, if it would be better to rent instead the next time we come to WDW. Also trying to figure out if we should buy into a membership some day.:goodvibes

Hi, I would suggest you go to the rent/trade board here, and ask the renters. You do NOT have to be a member to rent. I rented in "05, and stayed at BCV. But be careful: many renters, become owners (ME)...:rotfl2:

good luck!

Yes, you can rent from a DVC owner if you aren't a member. The member uses their points to make a reservation - you use the reservation and pay the owner for the use of their points. The price is based on whatever you and the owner work out.

For planning purposes, there are point charts linked above to help you figure out how many points you would need for your stay. Disney has 3BR units that will house 10, but they are tricky and expensive to get. You'll have a much easier time getting a 2BR and a 1BR (or studio) to hold the ten of you.

Once you see how many points you will need, figure on a price of $11-12 / point. If you are lucky and work hard, you might get points a bit cheaper - but to test and see if it is worth it, figure on at least $11 - $12 is you want to be more sure.

Once you've gone through all that, you can see if it's worth even considering renting DVC. Then you'll have to come back and read up on all the practical aspects of making it happen. But just a few of the key points to consider:

1) Renting DVC is not as simple as going through Disney. You have to arrange a transaction with another person, deal with trust issue, need to arrange things far in advance, and have few cancellation options. It can be great, but it's not for everybody.

2) Renting makes most financial sense for Sun-Thurs

3) Be careful, your biggest financial risk is that you will DVC and end up becoming a member :)

Yes you can rent points and not be a member. I looked into this prior to buying at SSR but chose not to do so. Several things to consider but the main ones are that you do not make your own reservation, only the DVC member can do that for you. Second, you are paying the DVC member, not the DVC. There needs to be a lot of trust in this transaction!

As far as a price for renting, it is what the market dictates. Check out the rent/trade forum on this site to see what the going rate is (last I looked it was around $10 - $12 per point).

The question of buying a DVC membership is more complicated. Ask yourself: how often do you go to WDW? Do you like to stay in moderate to deluxe rooms? What time of year do you travel? Using your example above and traveling in December with 10 people, you could stay 7 nights in a three bedroom Grand Villa at OKW, during Dec 1-14 for 356 points, SSR will run 505 points and BWV 558 points. It would be best to buy into the resort you wish to stay at if you want the Grand Villa. You will have the 11 month ressie available. Depending on how often you travel, you can bank and borrow points to get to these point totals. (Check out the DVC points chart on the link at the top of the forum page).

If you're looking at 10 people again you may want to look at OKW for a GV. Overall renting is pretty easy. Other places you may want to look include redweeks.com, Timeshare users group, myresortsnetworks.com, ebay, bidshares and the like.

If you decide to rent a reservation from a DVC member for December, you'll need to do it soon. Dec is a prime time for DVC members because the points required to stay are low. So places get booked soon, as soon as 11 months for lots of the villas. You will not be able to get what you need, especially for 10 people, the closer you get to your dates.

I agree.

Thanks everyone for your information. It looks like it could be kind of expensive for a place big enough for 10 people, such as the Grand Villas. I will certainly be looking into it more, but probably not around Dec. as it is too late for me to plan such a big trip without more information and time to do it. Also as far as becoming DVC members, if the rumors are true, it would make more sense for us to wait for the Grand Californian to open up spots. It looks pretty suspicious, as we were at DL last month and they were really pushing becoming DVC members. Hope it is, as we only live 3 hours away. Then when we could make it work for a big trip, use our points at WDW. A nice dream but who know???? Anyways, thanks again!:tinker:

I booked Old Key West online for June 2005 in January 2005, and booked Saratoga Springs in Jan 2007 for June 2007. It is possible to book into the DVC resorts without being a member. It is pricey. (I had a 2BR Villa) I wouldn't wait much longer though....
