No more reselling kids clothes???

I can't help but think many consignment stores are going to have to close their doors permanently because of this. Please tell me I'm wrong!

This government is completely out of control. Most of my childrens clothes come from the thrift shop or yard sales. Between church clothes, school cloths and play clothes and three growing children I would be completely broke. I can buy a dress for my daughter that would cost 50 dollars for about 3, it still looks brand new. My kids even like going just to see what they can find. I would think that the government really has much bigger issues to worry about than what my kids are wearing. I would love to know what government official came up with this brillant:sad2: idea

First , yes obviously I want my children to be safe. Ok that said this is just bad for an already bad economy. I can count 4 thrift stores in my small community all of them very busy especially these days. It is the only way many around here can afford to clothe their children due to poor income or job loss. Thrift shops may not make or break the economy but it will have an effect. Not to mention this essentially forces people to shop more often than not in big box stores. People won't be able to afford those prices and will either charge (isn't that part of the reason the economy is a mess already) or steal. And what ever happened to the keep stuff out of landfills reduce REUSE recycle... I hope that this is one of those things that turns out to be a rumor believed and passed on by the media.

What about all those school clothing sales they have too?

This is ridiculous.

I dont even have young kids anymore (13 & 17) and I'd be fuming if I were you guys.

OMG! Congress hard at work again with the pressing issues of the day! Forget the economy, forget the fact that tens of thousands of people are losing their jobs....but, hey- they can get those bargain KILLER children's clothes off the shelves!

I did not think that this could be real either. First time I've heard anything about it. I just saw the article on LAtimes site also. We have been saving so much $ over the yrs. on childrens clothing for our 3 kids by shopping at thrift stores. Fabulous, now on top of the huge increases in food prices, lower to middle income folks will have to buy overpriced clothes as well. I for one am tired of the Politicians trying to be the nanny for all people and all things!

How about taking some of the proposed $ going to the scam artist bankers and the auto industry and give it back to the people who are paying for all of this crap and waste!! We will stimulate the economy by purchasing new clothes to replace the millions we just had to dump in landfills to cloth our children!

I thought the new motto was "going green?" The hypocrisy is amazing! I for one, would love to throw just about every congressmen/woman out on their hiney and let them try to live how we do. Maybe then they would see the err of their ways.

That really is crazy, although I understand they are simply looking out for the safety of children.
I really hope this law doesn't move up here to Canada. Although I usually do not buy used clothes, I have bins full of name brand clothes that I have been planning on selling.
I really feel for you guys and hope the gov't is planning on doing something to assist the low income families that can barely afford to clothe their kids in thrift clothes, let alone brand new.

Another thought.....

With this whole new world of 'being green' - how ridiculous to WASTE hoardes and hoardes of children's clothes - all to go into a dump? What sense does this make???

And stores like Once Upon a Child can kiss it good bye now.

Thanks Congress!

Lame!

From what I've read this law only affects businesses. Carter's (as the manufacturer) would be affected, as would Carson's (as the seller) but it will not affect Mary Carter, who is having a garage sale and selling Susie's jeans and snowsuit to Sherry Carson.

This law also affects crafters and is not retroactive. I have a children's hair bow/accessories/tutu business and under this law, every item lot I have needs to be tested. Testing is expensive for the small business and the labs aren't too interested in dealing with us. Even though the raw materials may be free/under the lead maximums, the final product needs to be tested. This is a major hot topic at Etsy.

I can see the baby clothes black market now1
List on ebay:
I am selling a cardboard box. You are buying the cardboard box. However, to ensure the box arrived to you in good condition, I must fill it with the following items of clothing:
:rotfl:
Seriously. Welcome to the Socialist Union of America! My dad is real big into researching the "New World Order" and the FIMA concentration camps. :rolleyes1
I just can't see this law keeping in step with the "going green" and "everyone do you part." What is the point of squishing my soda can and properly recycling it when I am going to be forced to put at least 50 gallons of clothing into a landfill per year (between 3 young children, I KNOW it is at least that much!)

My husband is a carpenter who makes children's toys on the side (wooden cars, etc) and it affects that, too. He won't be allowed unless he gets each one tested. So basically what happens is that the large manufacturers are the only ones who can afford to get the testing done...and they caused the problem.

This is outrageous. I'm sick of the gov't helping us 'for our own good' and making things worse. It's wasteful and abhorant. People need to do something about it. I'm going to look into this and see if I can find anything to do. I urge others to do the same.

I read the government website quickly and didn't see anything that implied this was actually true. Maybe someone has more time to read it carefully.

Go to the corner of Third and Main. Locate the mailbox. Next to the mailbox you will see a large cardboard box. Tape a $10 bill to the lamp post that is five feet to the right of the box. Take the box and run like hell!

I called our local resale store and they have not heard anything about it. I told them the website and they are going to look into it. YIKES. I would greatly miss my used kids clothing store.

that is terrible. It is okay to bring lead tainted products in from China though. UGH.

This is just crazy! I've always been a garage saler and thrift store junkie. I get a lot of clothes for my kids there. What's going to happen now???

oh my gosh this is Govt BS at its finest if its true. I hope its not though.

I can't believe this. If it's true, my favorite little consignment stores will be out of business and I don't know what I'll do. We depend on the great clothes at great prices.

I have about 25 huge totes full of boys clothes in my basement that were to be a yard sale in May. We were hoping that would sell enough to take a nice little summer camping trip.
