No more reselling kids clothes???

Another thought.....

With this whole new world of 'being green' - how ridiculous to WASTE hoardes and hoardes of children's clothes - all to go into a dump? What sense does this make???

not only that but if they go into a dump and they are contaminated, they could possibly be leaching lead and pthalates and whatever else into the groundwater. I'm sure that's really healthy too

this also means no more freecycle???

Freecycle may be different because you are passing something along, not selling it. That's my interpretation at least :confused3

This whole thing seems kind of Big Brother-ish doesn't it? Like a PP said - whats next? Food and locally grown produce?? No more Bake Sales kiddies - But you can sell stamped lead-tested cookies from China! I guess you could give the stuff away and "request a Donation"? I can see it now, ..."You can have these great, gently worn size 2 boys shoes from a clean smoke free home for Free. Suggested donations start at $2.25..." Donate now or you will be out... donated? :confused3

It does not appear that freecycle will be affected.

This is just crazy! I've always been a garage saler and thrift store junkie. I get a lot of clothes for my kids there. What's going to happen now???

Garage sales should still be fine. It's unclear how this will affect consignment shops but it's possible they will not be able to sell untested items.

oh my gosh this is Govt BS at its finest if its true. I hope its not though.

They couldn't win the war on drugs so they decided to try to declare war on used onsies.

My sister makes hairbows. She told me a couple of weeks ago that this law has her crafter/ribbon community up in arms. Basically all of the boutiquey type clothes that are hand made will be gone too. So it doesn't just affect second hand shops, consignments, and people who shop thrift stores, it also affects the small business/crafter. Just more big government.

This has been discussed in great lengths all over the ebay boards. One ironic point I read was that one of the largest testers for lead is located in CHINA!

We have several kids consignment sales in this area that I take my kids stuff to and love the extra $$$ that brings in. Ugh.

Is anyone starting to see this is starting to look like a  tax issue, rather than a concern for safety?

Unbelievable. Well, I guess my dd better not get used to having abercrombie quite so soon. No way would I pay retail. Oh well, I guess my niece and nephew will get alot more hand me downs from us since I won't be able to sell on ebay!

Here is a link someone posted on another board I belong to. This particulat article is aimed more towards those who design and sell children's boutique clothing. However, at the bttom of the article are some links for signing an online petition and sample letters to congressmen, etc.

I am sure that this is going to put a bit of a dent in ebay sales. What I don't get is how this passed through congress with out even a whisper up until now when it is supposed to go into effect in a month. Somehow this sounds over the top but then again it wouldn't be the first time the government did something that was over the top.

This is exactly what I thought when I first read this thread. Government has been looking at how to tax ebay for years (at least that was the rumor). I guess they didn't find a way so they need to shut them down.

I don't understand this. If these are used clothes, didn't some child already wear these "toxic" clothes once. So they didn't mind that, it's the second time they are worried about? Wouldn't some of the toxicity wear off or something already?

If true, this is too scary. The government needs to butt out.

That's a great link! I passed it on to another message board I'm on!

You know - each one of us can do something. You start passing the word around to all your friends at school, church, daycare, etc. Along with that pass out your senators and representative's phone numbers and start calling them like mad. If their phones are lit up about this, they can change it very quickly. Take the power back, folks! You hired these people. Let them know how you feel!!!

is this just in the U.S. or for Canada too. I havent heard of such a thing before. If it does happen there are going to be a lot of people that need financial help as kids clothes are not cheap to buy new.

I wonder if this is a kind of "forced" stimulation of the economy. If you buy used or buy homemade you are not stimulating the economy. Children and parents of children make up a HUGE numberof people in the US. If we are all forced to buy new this will stimulate the ecnomy. I don't like being forced to do anything. I should have the choice as what to buy and what to dress my kids in. They should give us all the warnings but let us make the decision. I really hate when the government starts telling me what to do with my own children. Unfortunately, I think this is just the beginning.

This is the Consumer Product Safety Information Act President Bush signed into law August 2008. So far our government hasn't been able to find a way to pass laws in Canada also. Give 'em time, though. .

Okay, if I understand the article correctly, it would apply to individual sellers on ebay too as long as they weren't selling more than one of the exact same thing? :confused3

I don't know, I'm lost! I've been reading lots of different articles and the information is conflicting.
