No more reselling kids clothes???

Man, I hope this is resolved and doesn't happen.

We buy as much used as we can.

This is the Consumer Product Safety Information Act President Bush signed into law August 2008. So far our government hasn't been able to find a way to pass laws in Canada also. Give 'em time, though. .
Thanks for answereing, i agreee that if it happens ther it will happen here to

Ebay has sucked lately anyway. I live near the warehouse of a pretty well known smocked lne. Last spring I bought a bunch for Al that didn't fit, so I threw them on Ebay and made my money back, but I guess those are new, so would this affect me?

The way it's written, this new law affects ALL childrens products, new or used.

I hope they revise it!

:scared1:
People just can't afford new clothes right now. More people of govmt assistance will not stimulate the economy.

Well, I can tell you that my kids will be down to bare bones wardrobe if this happens.

Wow... this is crazy. I usually don't buy my kids clothes at consignment but my friends and I all swapp our kids clothes. But I have the youngest and what am I going to do with all these clothes if donation centers stop taking them.

As for EBAY I have never sold, but one way to get around "selling" the clothes is give them for free but just pay the handling & processing fee :rotfl: It works on TV doesn't it?????

NO More second hand toys!!!! Im gonna cry! What about all those old collectors GI JOES? Old cars? I will cry! I love this junk.

That clarification was still unclear. I cannot believe this is even a thought let alone almost a law:scared1:
Seriously, I grew up with thrift store clothes (still standing) and my 2 kids have worn them their entire lives without any side effects at all. Honestly, I can't believe that during a time of "going green" "recycling" and this tough economy, all of a sudden, lead testing in "hand me down" clothes is even a thought.
Hey congress, how about looking for a way for people to find jobs...start there:lmao:

Yay. More, bigger government putting their hand in something else that has no logic. :thumbsup2

One ebay board had this article"

"Consignment shops are in the clear after Feds clear up new lead law"
LINK: http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=96355
OMG! I sure hope the article you posted is correct! I resell all of my kids clothes each year. I use Ebay and a local seasonal consignment sale. It is totally unacceptable if this new act puts local consigment shops out of business!!! What are they thinking???????

This is just bizarre! I give all of DS's outgrown clothes to a friend, and I buy all of his stuff new so I guess I don't really think it will impact me. I just think it is weird.

I, too, looked at the government website and I don't see this information on there. I see specific stuff listed like pacifiers, cribs, and metal jewelry. I don't necessarily know how to read all the legal jumbo, though. Can anybody post a link to this "law"?

This fine gentleman here is the one who sponsored the bill. The bill was originally done in 1972. In 2008, the word "Improvement" was added to the name of the bill.

What concerns me is the party who will now run the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives is also the party of the gentleman who sponsored the bill.

If anyone here voted for this guy, then you are also partially responsible for this.

I hope this is an isolated case, but it will be something worth keeping an eye on.

That's well-intentioned, but awful. Way to make the poor people poorer.
It's likely to hit the middle-class thrifty harder than the poor. The real poor-poor-poor tend to get a lot of stuff given to them through DSS.
I read that last week too.. I think 2-09-09 is the official date... that means no more ebay .. no more garage sales or even craigslist!
Well, not necessarily. How many times have you seen something like this on eBay:

You are bidding on a plain white envelope. Inside that envelope is a coupon for _______. Expiration date, company, etc.

The same thing can happen with kids' clothing: You are bidding on a manila envelope. I will include FOR FREE to the winning bidder a girls' winter coat, sized 6X, hot pink, Lands End name brand, used but with plenty of wear left in it.
Honestly, I can't believe that during a time of "going green" "recycling"
That thought hadn't occured to me yet, but you're right: Environmentalists should be solidly against this law.

What concerns me is the party who will now run the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives is also the party of the gentleman who sponsored the bill.
I have to admit that though I do despise BOTH political parties, I had already thought of this. Welcome back to the world of big government trying to control every detail of our lives.

I read something about this 2 days ago. The piece I read said that garage sales and even hand me downs of children's toys and clothing would be impacted by this law. It basically said that as long as you own it you can use it, but after that you have to throw it away.

I find this whole thing absolutely ridiculous...

Oh, and for those consignment stores that are still around afterwards...how will they know if the clothes you are bringing in are "new" lead free clothes or "old" pre-ban clothes? Will the new clothes be certified and tagged accordingly?

There are almost no news stories on this....

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I can't imagine people are going to want to have all those things thrown into landfills. What a waste.

It sounds like a reaction to try and protect kids (after all those China toy scares) with some unintended consequences.

I find it hard to believe this will come to pass. Boutique people and crafters may well be affected, but not garage stores and the Salvation Army.

Why not the Salvation Army? They resell the clothes or distribute them at the least...wouldn't that fall under this idiotic new rule?
