NJ High School Student Dies of H1N1

2 of my very good friends are nurses. One is at one of the most prominent Hospitals in Bergen County, NJ. She said they have been getting some flu cases BUT they are not testing everyone for this Swine Flu, they are just giving them Tami Flu IF they have those symptons. She said pnemonia is also going around as well. That is more prominent than this whole swine flu thing.

This is tragic.

I honestly figured he died of something else? He died really quickly.

Pnumonia is what a lot of the people with the flu are getting. They have the flu and it progresses to pneumonia.

The doctors and nurses will treat the pneumonia (not necessarily the flu).

This is why the CDC monitors both influenza and pneumonia deaths. So the pneumonia is likely increased due to the "whole swine flu thing."

OP here...there was bit bit more info. in another local paper today:
http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/loc...678/2009/october/28/student-dies-of-h1n1.html

Apparently he had a sore throat on Friday and on Saturday his fever spiked and he had a febrile seizure, but had no underlying medical conditions. Poor kid...he must have been terrified. My prayers are with his family.

The article also says that this is the first death from H1N1 in our county, but the 19th "H1N1-related death" in NJ. I didn't realize there had been so many in our state, which supposedly didn't have much H1N1 going around yet.

I hope they schedule our school district's vaccinations soon, and that the shot is available rather than the mist.

I feel for the family. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. It is widespread at the clinic I work in. More than 1/2 our patients are walking in w/ flu symptoms. We had 4 employee's out w/ presumed flu and 3 more went home early today.

The district where I work in Northern NJ, was going to offer the regular flu shot and the H1N1 mist to all staff and students. I got my flu shot last year right in the nurses office. However, we got an email a few weeks ago that they don't have enough to offer it up to everyone so they are letting the city take care of it. Parents got a letter that said if they were interested to go and it would be a first come first serve type of system.

They still have our water fountains covered because of the fear of spreading germs and they are pushing the use of hand sanitizer. I spray my students' desks a few times a week and anything I can in the classroom that they touch frequently, but then you have to worry about the rest of the school.

I never thought of the water fountains! And I'm in and out of my sons' school multiple times a week. I'll have to see if they're covering the water fountains there. There is no way you could disinfect them between each use.

That scares the heck out of me.

My son had a fever Sunday and runny/stuffy nose, but that was it, no other symptoms. The fever went up to 102.3 Sunday night and then went away overnight, never came back, he was fever free all Monday and he went back to school Tuesday and he's felt fine since then.
I was concerned about H1N1 Sunday night but since he was fine on Monday other than being tired and taking a nap which he never does(he's 8), I guess he just had some other bug.
I live in Bergen County and hadn't seen too many absences at their school, but now his best friend and his two sisters are both out with fevers--but again very mild, like his was.

My kids pediatrician's office sent out an email that they had 30% of their H1N1 Flu Mist available and I was able to get it for my kids. They go in 11/9(we had to wait a month since they got their seasonal FluMist in the beginning of October). I will rest a little more easily once they're vaccinated.

My sister in law just called to tell me that her son and daughter's high school had over 100 kids sent home with "flu-like symptoms" yesterday! :scared1: May not sound like a lot for some of you in the big cities, but this is over a quarter of the school, total.

On the other hand, my daughter is the ONLY ONE in her school who has had symptoms at all similar to the swine flu. :confused3 Not the last, though, I'm thinking.

Flu-like symptoms ARE symptoms of swine flu. ??

Monmouth County here... Our schools and health dept started giving out the Flu mist this week. I am waiting for the shot for my kids...I hope they get here soon.

My kids are no longer using water fountains in school, they are allowed to bring and keep water bottles on their desks. Makes total sense.

I am so sorry for this family's loss...:sad1:

Last week 351 schools were closed nationwide and over 120,000 children were kept home from school due to closings. I heard this on MSNBC this AM.

I am so sorry to hear of any child dying, whether it is from the flu or anything else. Those parents have my sincere sympathy.

Wow, I feel for the boy and his family... such a terrible loss.

My boy came home last night with 103.2 then after tylenol backed down to 101 - waiting for a call back from the doc office now... A lot of kids in school are sick and we are scheduled for the vaccination in Nov - they are getting the info together now for it...

I hate reading these stories, sooo sad.

Burlington Cty - Westampton - live about 1 mile from RVRHS!!!! :scared1:

Yes, scared here. Came home yesterday to a Honeywell Instant Alert that Westampton Twp will be doing H1N1 vaccination clinics - problem is that there is no vaccinations so we have to wait for another update from school district as to when the clinics will begin.

There has been stories going around that the boy was sick and parent couldn't afford to take to the dr's. He was feel better and went back to school and then basically died. Very sad....

School district is open and I believe students at the school are getting the vaccinations on Monday. This is a fairly big school with about 1500-2000 kids that go there from 5 sending districts....

Hopeful there will be more information about school vaccinations soon. I'm concerned because DS5 has asthma, but for work I go out to many of the schools in the county for programs and assemblies. I don't want to be exposed to something and bring it home to my family.

Does anyone from Burlington County know if the county's H1N1 clinics in Westampton will be mist or shots?

The CDC is reporting 22 NEW pediatric deaths for week 42 (week ending Oct 24). So very sad. :sad1:

It does not include this child from NJ.

It's only going to get worse. Very, very sad!

And still there are those who insist that this isn't any different than the regular seasonal flu - even though that season hasn't begun yet..

I feel awful for those poor parents.. :(
