Nikon D50

From all I've heard the 18-70 is a better lens that the 18-55. I would take the 18-70. I've been caught in WDW with only my 70-300 with me and I was missing the wider angle of my other lenses. I almost never take my 28-135 off of my camera in Disney. I find it much easier to get closer to my subject than trying to back up so I can get my shot framed properly. Especially with all the people who will be in your picture.

Out of curiousity, you do know about the 1.5 crop factor built into the D50. Essentially making your 18-70mm lens a 27-105mm zoom equivalent.

I do know about the crop. With that in mind, the 18-70 may be all I need. Perhaps, I should buy with the 18-70 at 769.95, and then consider the 18-200 later on when the price drops. Of course, the difference in kit price is only 169.00 to add the 55-200.....decisions....

Yes but then you are back to the 18-55 instead of the 18-70. You should have held on to your Canon lenses for your Elan, then you would have a starting point.

For Disney, 18-200 VR is more than enough. If you want to go crazy, I'm sure Nikon have something like Canon's 17-40 f/4L.

If you want just one lens for now I would go with the 18-70 which gives you 27-105 35mm equivlient (sp?). Your right about the 18-200. Its probably the best lens option, but it is very expensive. If you go the 55-200 then your actually starting at 82-300. This gives you no wide angle.

I carry 2 lenses with me. I have a good fanny pack camera bag that holds all my essential gear. Currently I have the Nikkor 18-70 and also a Quantary 70-300.

I got my D50 with the 28-80, but quickly decided that I wanted the 18-70 because of the wide angle issue. I picked one up on ebay for a decent price.

I went to visit my local camera store this afternoon for a quick look at the 18-70. I think I've decided on the 18-70 and the 55-200 package offered at Cameta for 939.95. This way, I have the zoom now for little money, and I can, perhaps, sell the 55-200 if I decide to go with the 18-200 later on.

BTW, I still have that Sigma 28-300--in the box! Might need to check out Ebay to sell it if there's a market.

FWIW, I use a 24-120mm at Disney 95% of the time. Last time I went, the only time I changed it was to go to a 8mm fisheye for some really unique shots.

I'm selling my other 24-120mm for $250 shipped if you have any interest. It was a backup so it's basically perfect. Not a scratch on any of the optics and no brassing at all. The only thing bad I can say about it is that it doesn't have the original Nikon front cap, I lost that and replaced it with a generic 72mm cover.

If anyone is interested in it, drop me a PM.

Great advice, I will actually be carrying all three of my lenses. I have the 18-55 which I am sure will be used the most. Then my fanny pack bag has two lens cases and in them will be the 55-200 and the 70-300. I have numerous shots from the ol Point and shoot camera of the Show at the castle where you just can't get close enough. Not a problem for this trip.

Lookng at adding more memory, shooting in RAW mode really eats it up. Also, has anyone bought from newegg.com?

To answer your question in your title, yes, your D50 can take advantage of a 2gb SD card. I've never bought from newegg but I bought this card recently from Costco for $89.99.

I don't see why it would not be able to use a 2GB card. My very old Canon S20 and my kids' Kodaks all can, so I would hope anything newer should as well (especially a prosumer level like the Nikon D50).

As far as buying from NewEgg, I have bough some camera equipement from them and typically will recieve my merchandise 3-4 days after placing the order. They package well and I have not had any issues with them at all.

As an fyi I have also used B&H Photo (good prices on lens), J&R, buy.com, and buydig.com without any problems either. Amazon will sit on our order if you pick the 'free shipping' option, but you'll still get it in under 2 weeks.

Sorry I can only comment on NewEgg. I ordered a video card from them and wound up having a problem with it 8 months later...(not their fault) they sent me a knew one and I had it in about a week or so. They are very good and I would reccomend them to anyone.

I have the Nikon D50. What size lens do you use for your WDW trips. I am hoping to take only one lens with me so I need something that is an All purpose lens so to speak. What kind of lens do you use for your trips???

Nikon 18-200 VR. Pricey, but you will (almost) never need to change lens during your trip. The addred Vibration Reduction is a major plus too!

We acutally take 2 with us. The 18-70 and a 70-300. Most of the time we just use the 18-70 but there are some occasions that I want to get a closer shot.

I have the 18-70 D70s kit lens for my D50 (got a great deal on ebay, and it works awesome) and I also have a Quantary 70-300. If you want one lens and can afford the 750 or so dollars then the 18-200 is perfect (I believe it is the kit lens for the D200). Otherwise you can look at the 18-125's that sigma and tamron have. Those go for about $300-400. You could also try ebay for a referbished lens or for one that someone doesn't want anymore. Always worth taking a look everynow and then.

I rarely travel with one lense for my Nikon unless I am just planning on taking specific types of photographs or plan on setting my camera features allowing me to obtain quality photo after I crop the original photograph(s). I carried my wide angle-standard zoom lense with me everyday at Disney along with my 50mm f1.4 to shoot in indoor-existing light conditions.

If you want to take pictures of the castle, landscape or wide scene while also taking photographs of family or firends then consider a wide angle-standard zoom ...typically 17-70mm (25.5-105mm in 35mm camera lense terms) which is economical too and provide good wide angle capabilities and allows you to take good portrait shots. I think at Disney this will cover 70-90% of your photo needs.

Shooting with a 70 or 80-200 zoom limits your ability to shoot wide angle scene type shots or shooting pictures where you are confined and you want to get a lot of things included in your composition. Lot of places at Disney are confined due to building structures and people, but this type of lense is ideal for portrait and telephoto shots.

If you just want to take one lense then take a wide angle-standard lense zoom, since if you set your camera properly you can always crop your photo to obtain a closer image of something farther away. Also, this lense will be lighter and easier to transport around than a telephoto lense which others have mentioned, especially if it is F2.8 or faster. The lense elements in the faster telephoto lenses are rather heavy and carry the burden and stress related to protecting these expensive assets. Cheaper versions are available too, which are light weight since they are barrel zoom lenses (70-300). I often left my f2.8 zoom lense in the resort safe, since I was getting the shots I needed with my other lenses, but I still used it on a less frequent basis.

Just remember. Each Disney resort have room safes so you can always leave a lense in your rooms safe. It appears each resort provides a different size safe, but the fron desk also have safes too if you would happen to find your room safe to narrow or shallow.

I put my lens in a padlocked bag, in a padlocked travel bag, in a padlocked suitcase chained tightly around the TV.

Could anyone advise me please I have got the Nikon D50 with 18-70mm and 55-300mm lenses. I have just found a 28-300mmf3.5-6.3macro for about £100 approx $165 do you think it is worth buying it to take to disney so i need only carry 1 lens with me instead of 2.
