Yeah I wonder ... if it is political/cultural posturing by the communist party majority owners trying to throw their weight around, or if the problems are that the construction site is not up to standards.

I did see some pretty spectacularly bad construction work in China that would never pass inspection in the west. Especially in the area of reinforced-concrete structures. I've seen stubs of re-bar sticking out in the middle of steps in hotel stairwells. And once I saw a huge building under construction with a very tall archway in the front as a kind of ornamental touch to set off the bottom 2 floors or so. Anyways, the concrete in the arch wasn't set properly so there were gigantic, gaping holes in the line of the arch ... like they didn't stir or agitate the concrete after pouring (or whatever they do) to get the air bubbles out. They had continued building the rest of the 20 floors or whatever, and it was obvious that the archway was going to be covered up with cladding of some kind and nobody would know any better. Probably the arch was ornamental and not structural, but it made me wonder what shortcuts might have been taken on the actual structural members.

I gather that theme parks aren't built like highrise towers, but there are a lot of complex shapes and tricky details like cantilevers, complex steel work, ultra-precise dimensions, and the visible concrete such as on pathways and retaining walls has to look absolutely perfect with no flaws, bubbles or large cracks.

So were the Chinese officials just trying to lay a bit of attitude on Iger (actually a lot of attitude) or were they not keen for him to see SDL until after the aluminum cladding, patches and paint have been applied?
From how I understand it Shanghai officials don't like Iger and try to keep him out of what they do.

As far as I understand, quite a few American engineers take part of the project. It's still Chinese labor though. It could very well be related to poor construction standards.
Few of the imagineers working on the Shanghai project are actually in Shanghai. Instead they are working stateside.

we'll be there in October...hope it's finished by then...the cranes have been up the last 2 times I've been there...would be nice NOT see that darned crane...LOL

Same with us, we're going in September. I'm hoping it will be at least nearly done by then. I do like the changes they've made though.

Yes I like it too...that hub was SO congested, however, I'm thinking that Main Street will still be a "sea of humanity" swimming towards the exit, even with the alternate exit. We usually just get over to the side, and spend a half hour or so people watching or shopping, (but the stores are pretty crowded then too!)...and hope that the buses have cleared somewhat by the time we get there. ;)

I'm really happy for Paris. It's a really beautiful resort, and it definitely deserves better treatment. Hopefully this will eventually lead to a big renovation project at Studios to get rid of the remains of what is arguably the laziest Disney park ever created.

In Disney's defense of th studios. Paris told disney they wanted a second park in a certain time frame. That was part of the negotiations. Disney really didn't want to build that second park at the time they did because they hadn't seen any return on DLP yet. Now that TWDC is in control I think the park will be better run.

I can understand that. And as you say, now that Disney is in charge things should work better for Paris. The Ratatouille addition looks very inmersive and well themed, so that's a good indicator.

For any animation fans out there, here's a first look into Zootopia, the upcoming animated feature from Walt Disney Animation Studios:

Goodwin wants a Zootopialand. Would that go into MK or Animal Kingdom? Or would they try to cram it into Epcot somewhere because we "purists" need to loosen up according to Staggs. :)

They can dislike anyone they want, especially if they're paying the bills. But it's a bit odd to sign up for a really big, expensive and highly visible project with a businessman that you don't even like. Hard to understand. Downright ... inscrutable.

Animal Kingdom. Unfortunately the available area is already taken by a different franchise. We can still have a Big Hero 6 attraction in Japan ;) Or even better, re-theme the entire Dinoland and throw Zootopia in there.
