News Round Up 2016

Not everything. That did not look good. It may be that the trailer was done really poorly. That's possible.

The proof is in the pudding at this point. We shall see.

Crotchety...that's good. Carbon date me...if you please.

I'm not for excuses for poor quality. Neither should any fan be.

Who's making excuses? Don't mistake my enthusiasm for things I think I'll enjoy as a lack of critical vision. I'll call out BS as much as anybody else, and can be rather crotchety myself.

What specifically seems to be of poor quality to you? The animation? The story? The characterization or bits of dialog? I'm just confused as to what you've found so offensive.

The proof is indeed in the pudding - my only point is that the pudding hasn't even hit the table yet and you've already decided you don't like it. That's all.

I'm not a fan of the live action remakes. Cinderella was a good enough movie, but really added nothing to the animated cartoon outside of some pretty costumes. (And the fact that it always bugged me in the original that Lady Tremaine didn't try to take advantage of Cinderella marrying the prince, where-as in this one she did, a minor point admittedly.) Jungle Book is one of my least favorite Disney movies, episodic and kind of boring. The only parts worth anything is the Phil Harris/Baloo stuff. Jon Favreau, the director, is very hit and miss. I also tend to dislike CGI talking animals. I think the likelihood I go to see this in the theater is very low.

That said, the trailer seems competent enough. Disney is going to continue with these remakes because every time they've tried something original in the last 6-8 years it's tanked.

Not necessarily. Frozen (kinda original), inside out. It all depends on the story and such. These remakes are way too close to the chest for my liking

When has one actor against green screen and cg backdrops ever worked?has it?

"Attack of the clowns" comes to mind

I believe he was talking about Disneys live action movies. There haven't been any love actions recently from Disney that have done well. Disney animation always does ok for the most part unless they really screw up.

Not entirely...

Alice in wonderland, Cinderella, and malificent all did well.

I'm sure beauty and the beast will too.

This particular "effort"...looks misguided. At least from the trailer

To each their own I liked the trailer and am interested to see the film.

I forgot about maleficent I thought that was good. I was never a big Alice fan.

Yes - that's what I meant. Live action end if you look at the slate for the next 5 years, it's all Marvel, Star Wars, and live action remakes - with the occasional feel-good real-life drama thrown in. (The Finest Hours is the next one of these.) Oh wait, there's a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel...

...It's why I was rooting hard for Tomorrowland to be a success. Admittedly John Carter, Lone Ranger, and Tomorrowland weren't great, but them all tanking badly is gonna make Disney gunshy on trying original ideas.

To keep with a news thread - here's Disney's current slate for the next two years:
January 29th 2016: "The Finest Hours"
March 4th 2016: "Zootopia"

April 15th 2016: "The Jungle Book"
May 6th 2016: "Captain America: Civil War"
May 27th 2016: "Alice Through the Looking Glass"
June 17th 2016: "Finding Dory"
July 1th 2016: "The BFG"
August 12th 2016: "Pete's Dragon"
November 4th 2016: "Doctor Strange"
November 23rd 2016: "Moana"
December 16th 2016: "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"

March 17th 2017: "Beauty and the Beast"
March 31st 2017: "Ghost in the Shell"
May 5th 2017: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"
June 16th 2017: "Cars 3"
July 7th 2017: "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales"
November 3rd 2017: "Thor: Ragnarok"
November 22nd 2017: "Coco"
December 22nd 2017: Untitled Disney Fairytale Project (Live Action)
Dec 2017: "Star Wars: Episode VIII"

I highlighted in red the projects that are "Original" - and that's stretching it. After The Finest Hours, 3 are animated. The BFG I will give them credit for at least it has not been put to film before. The last one, Ghost in the Shell isn't really original - but seeing as it is a remake of Japanese Manga - I will give this one a pass as it is at least original to Disney. (And Disney is only co-financing this one.)

Don't get me wrong - I am looking forward to a lot of these movies. But there's not a lot of risk here.

Technically BFG has been done before. I remember seeing it years ago (I enjoyed reading this book years ago), and I had to look it up to make sure. A movie was made in 1989. I remember being disappointed in the movie, but you always are when you enjoy a book. I don't remember enough of the movie any more, however.

Actually there was a UK animated movie many years ago so if you want to get technical this one's a "live action remake" of sorts too.

I will be surprised if The Jungle Book does as well as Cinderella, Maleficent, etc. There is a certain charm that one can acquire when capturing animals that caper about and sing in an animated and cartoonish manner. I think that some of that will be lost when using real-life CGI. Do I think that this movie will be bad? No, I don't think so. I just think that it will be a much harder mountain to climb to achieve the degree of whimsy and charm of the original animated version. I've tried to imagine the bear with Bill Murray's voice prancing about and singing and I think that it will be tough. We will see though. Disney caught me off guard with how good Maleficent was. Maybe the same thing will happen here.

And if you want to get technical....it's not just Disney. Did a quick look, and 13 of the top 17 movies in 2015 and 15 of the top 17 movies in 2014 in the box office were non-original movies. Like it or not, seems to be either a trend or the way things are now.

Bill Murray should've been a gopher...
