News Round Up 2016

Sorry to be off topic....is anyone else having trouble staying logged in? Any time I switch to a different app on my phone, or even sometimes when I just switch threads on the dis, I become logged out. Is this a disboards glitch the past couple days or something with my phone? Any advice? Thanks for the help!

I haven't had any problems. You could check the tech issues board for more info or post your question there.

When in doubt reboot your phone.

Movie News:

With Secret Life of Pets opening, Dory loses #1 this weekend. Domestic haul is still high(>125% of Nemo), International is low due to limited release. However, of note is in the countries where Dory has been open for 2-3 weeks, International take is 30%-90% of Finding Nemo. So it is not showing as well Internationally, making $1Billion and possibly even $900Million a stretch for the film (unless Japan, UK, Germany) really step up. China is only $36Million (no Nemo comparison), but what is really interesting is France (Nemo $64Million, Dory $10Million after 3 weeks).

In short, mixed bag for Dory overseas, still in limited release - but with current International results Dory is not looking very healthy overseas. I haven't seen any analysis as to why.

I came across this video:

It's part of the new Minnie's Tropical Splash at Tokyo Disney Sea which apparently started July 9th as part of their summer festivities. I got to say I love the energy the crowd is putting into it. Was interesting to see how differently the Japanese Parks are run such as spraying the crowd with water & a female chipmunk with Daisy and Minnie.

The Japanese love Disney, don't they? Let's hope that they are not spraying the lake's water onto peoples' faces :scratchin

Still way too early to tell internationally, it is doing better in a couple countries and worse in others with some big hitters to come. Seems $1b is still in sights. With domestic around $500m a 50-50 split would be disappointing for international take and still give over $1b. Also hits Japan during its prime movie season and releases in South Korea this weekend. My bets are on over $1b

In Japan you don't need to stay out of the damn lakes the lakes come to you. But yeah, I'm thinking it's lake water also.

That looks like so much fun!! I wish the U.S. parks would return to just having fun.

Well it was no surprise secret life of pets took the cake.

I am surprised how bad dory is performing overseas. Do we know how nemo did overseas in comparison?

The Tokyo parks are run like the Disney parks were run in the 70s. Pristine, and a huge amount of care to keep those parks in tip top shape. The Japanese love Disney and it shows.

Nemo was 60% foreign take so it did well. Dory's strange foreign release makes it odd to compare since it hasn't released in many countries. France and Spain are both very low comparisons. Some of the smaller countries are up, Australia is flat. Germany, Japan, UK have yet to release which are the big ones - depending on whether they do well or hold flat is the key.

I noticed that too...really weak international numbers...considering the huge haul for minions last year.

I think it will do well in Japan at least.

Some of the big markets just haven't opened yet for Dory (by the way, Secret Life of Pets also has an "odd" opening schedule - taking 3 months to open in all territories). Dory did make 7.1 million in Korea this weekend, the largest opening for a Pixar film there. So it shows that Dory is just getting started internationally. When it is all said and done it will be just fine internationally.

Excerpt from one article I read this morning:

"Another $29.7M was captured overseas this weekend for Dory boosting the offshore total to $220.2M and the global gross to $642.8M. Korea opened well to $7.1M marking the best debut ever there for any Pixar film. Many key territories have yet to open including Mexico, Japan, and the U.K. which all launch later this month plus Italy and Germany which bow in September. Finding Dory is still on course to break $1 billion worldwide "

Also, while it has not opened in most of the big markets, it has already outdone that of Zootopia in many of the markets it is in. So far only 5 markets have reports numbers for this weekend, and of those 4 Dory has opened in. 3 out of the 4 it has made more money already that Zootopia (biggest being Australia it has made 30 million compared to 21 million by Zootopia) and the fourth, Netherlands, it is well on it's way to beating Zootopia as it was #1 there for the second straight week. So it is not doing that badly in the international markets. hasn't been great in China, but the domestic profits will more than make up for that.

It's scheduled up until September 5th. The rumors are Disney wants RoL to open for September.

Star Wars fireworks are also only currently scheduled until September 5th, and it was only very recently extended until then. It's really frustrating trying to plan a trip for September 10-18 with no nighttime stuff announced for two parks yet, especially with FP+ opening up tomorrow.

The Star Wars fireworks are almost a guarantee to be extended. They always take a while to update the calendars.
