Got back from WDW about a week ago, and got into pin trading when I was there. I'm going to try and stick with cat pins, and Jasmine.

I bought a whole bunch, (around 50,) and about 1/4 of them are cats, (Figaro, Aristocats, and the Lion King lions; Simba, Nala, and Scar,) and another 1/4 of them are ones with Jasmine in them. The other 1/2 are just ones I liked.

It's very addictive, and as soon as I got home, I bought another couple dozen off of e-bay.

Any tips on ways to svae money on this very addictive habit, or suggestions to get the best collection possible?

#1 rule- Pick a theme and stay with it- Its ALOT cheaper if ya "theme" from the get go

Other helpful things-

Make and stick to a budget- Whatever it be I get X per month or when X pins come out I get them etc.

Also get to know pinpics.com they can be helpful in letting ya know whats out there, and the trade/want ratio can be helpful in knowing the rarity of pins which usually helps on knowing how much to pay for it-

The budget idea is really good. Otherwise things seem to get out of control. There have been months recently when I have moved money form account to account to cover paypal and credit card bills for pin buying.

I still havent got this one collection thing going. My son collects Mickey pins so thats a small theme !!!LOL
I am collecting various DLRP series and the old eurodisney pins and ........
I am hoping as time goes on I will stop buying pins just because I like them as they seem to form other collections.
More than anything I would say enjoy the pins . There is a lot of talk about their worth and value but for me at least it is a hobby to enjoy. I have a wall full of cork boards which i am adding to weekly as more pins arrive. I love trading and the sucess of getting a pin in fair trade rather than paying over the odds on ebay.

I'm not sure i've helped but thanks for giving me somewhere to ramble on

Another thing that helped me was to decide what I was going to do with the pins when I got them. If they were going to just sit and collect dust or never be looked at again, I probably didn't need them in the first place. If they were going to be made into a scrapbook or some kind of rememberance of a trip or event, I was more willing to collect it. Some of the members on this board such as Nat have done some wonderful framed sets. These are great as they give me ideas of how to display my pins therefore letting me justify buying more.

I bought a binder for all of mine. So I think I'm going to stick with animals, with an emphasis on cats, and princesses with an emphasis on Jasmine. I also picked up a few special ones on my vacation, ones for MNSSHP, and the food and wine festival. It seems I'm always collecting something, stamps, trading cards, in high school it was Beanie Babies. Now it's pins.

At least the Disney pins won't eventually flop like the Beanie Babies did. I have rubbermaid tubs in my basement full of them, and they probably aren't worth a darn dime. :goodvibes

Don't hold your breath. The secondary pin market isn't the most stable either. On a side note, I am looking for a Beanie Baby frog and a Beanie Buddy too. My wife gave away ours and it has really put a damper on the Mother's Day Frog celebrations so I am trying to replace them.

For my Disney pins I bought the vest they were selling. Up until we moved to my in-laws I had it hung up on our bedroom door with all my pins on it. Its been in storage for almost 3 years now (we don't have a lot of extra room right now). We are going back to Disney at the end of next month. So no I have to dig it out of storage so I can check out my pin collection again. Then I can hang it back up somewhere. We are putting an addition on the in-laws house that should be done in the next 2 months. So I will definately have enough room to hand it up again with all the new pins added to it.

Disney pins are not the only pins I collect. I have a hat that has pins from all the Hard Rock Cafe's and Planet Hollywood's I've visited around the world (about 35 pins between the 2) plus about 12 different ski resort pins from places I've skied. That gets hung up with the vest. I have a bunch of pins from Patriots playoff games that I've attended that I keep with a laynard I wear to games.

I also like the idea of framing the pins. I found a web site that sells collector display cases for pins and other small items. Looks pretty cool. There is a small one for about $40 (holds approx 30-40 pins) and a large one for about $65 (holds approx 45-60 pins).

The idea of the binder is a good one too.

My DD12 (today ) the little crafter took a peice of felt cut it like a sheild put a stick with ribbon on it and hung it in her room puts all her favs. on that .

Don't make a mistake we all seem to fall into, which is deciding on a theme and "HAVING" to get EVERY pin within that theme -- whether you even like the pin or not.
Stay in themes, and only buy the pins you like.
You will find yourself wanting to buy a pin that you think is ugly only because your character is included.

The problem with themes is they cross over so much.

As example, I like castles. Well, Tink is often by a castle. So dozens of Tink pins later, I decided to get out of denial and admit I was collecting Tink! And then the pirates get in the picture. So there are pirates pins too. :rotfl2:
Then that extends to Adventureland, which then starts covering all the Lands. Before ya know it I have a ton of Ride and Attraction pins because they overlap from the Land pins. :rolleyes1

You get my drift....

Be afraid. Be very afraid. :3dglasses
I love my pins and would not want to part from them.

We had to laugh today at what we overheard while buying the Tink surprise pin this morning at the Contemporary.

A few kids were ooohhhing and aahhing at the pin station.
The mother yelled over -- I am NOT spending any more money. Forget it.

Literally a few minutes later she yells back to the kids -- Buy some Halloween pins dear!

Spoken like a true pin person. :rotfl2:
