New to packing cubes!

I order sets from Amazon. Off brand stuff. Honestly, we don't find the large cubes useful for cruises since we are mostly packing shorts and t-shirts. We only use mediums and smalls.

For one week, DD (6) can fit in 2 mediums and a small. I used 3 mediums and a small. We then have an extra small for miscellaneous stuff and one more for swimwear.

We have 2 sets. Each set is a different color and has diferent sizes of cubes. For myself, I'll use 2 large and 1 medium cubes. For my dd I' ll use 1 large and a medium. Sometimes I'll also use 1 or 2 smalls for both of us. I always overpack, no matter how hard I try not to, I still do. I find I can get more in the suitecases by using the cubes. It also makes unpacking so much easier. I pack our outfits in the cubes in the order we'll use them.. I put the cubes in the dresser drawers. Suitecases go under bed until time to pack up to leave.

This is the main problem I've heard of with these - especially when you're dealing with weight limits on the luggage (and yes, even carry-ons have a weight limit for the overhead bins). They make it very easy for you to go over that limit if you're not careful.

Another Ebags user here! I tend not to use the large ones as I find they don’t fit as nicely in my suitcase. I definitely go by type of clothing per cube rather than outfits. How many I use depends on the length of the trip.

For just me for 7 days, I use 2 large ones for clothes and a small one for underwear/socks. I do also have a flip folding thing that gets all the clothes the same size. It makes them great for fitting into the cubes.

What is this magical folding device you speak of?

Does anyone use the compression bags? You pack, seal and roll them up to push all the air out? Do they work?

We had used regular packing cubes until our last trip. I bought the compression packing cubes for our WBTA and a week in London. They were fantastic. There is a zipper that you close and it compresses the air out of the bag. We were able to carry a weeks worth of clothes in our Samsonite Underseater suitcase. I highly recommend them. I bought a set for my sister and her daughter who are coming with us this summer.

I just bought 4 sets of compression packing cubes and wonder how to care for them. Can I machine them in delicate cycle or do I have to hand wash them? The instruction says hand wash though. TIA!

I would do a delicate wash and hang to dry. I think dryers are much tougher on clothes than washing machines.

As for brand, we have several different brands and I don't see the difference really in any of them. They are all pretty much the same. Some have a zipper section up front which could come in handy but I find if I put small items in this section they are forgotten. I just looked at the compression ones and I don't think they would work for us. We unzip, fold the top over and place in the drawers like that then at the end of the trip its as easy as zipping them back up without having to repack plus our clothes never touch a drawer that could have held someone else dirty clothes before we got there. Who knows. A third thing I noticed about them that would be a deterrent for us is they are not see through, I like to be able to do a quick look at the top of the cube to see if I am holding the cube with T-shirts or the cube with the shorts. That's all just my needs being met, they may work for yours.

For size, I use the large to pack dress clothes. A couple pair of DH's dress pants and four or five shirts fit very nicely in one. The mediums we use for t's and shorts, the bathing suits. The small we use for underwear and socks. I also have a small that is used for misc. items such as a first aid kit, a nail file, spot remover pen, qtips, small sewing kit, sample packets of tide, nail clippers, that sort of stuff. That small cube sits in the linen closet till we travel and then goes into the suitcase, to the hotel/stateroom bathroom, and back to the linen closet when we get home. It is never unpacked so its always ready to travel.

We each have different color cubes so it is easy to see who's clothes are where at a glance. We also have a black set that we use to put dirty clothes in so that we can easily unpack the clean clothes and not have to wonder if the pink cube is the one that needs to be laundered. Its ALWAYS the black. If you fold the dirty clothes, as silly as that may sound, you can get tons of laundry in it. Also as to washing the cubes, we toss the black cubes in with the laundry when washing and have not had a problem yet. I don't dry them in the dryer so I can't speak about that. I don't want to chance them losing shape or melting a bit. I just hang them over a chair to dry. Easy Peasy. Storage is very easy as well. There very foldable so I just fold them all and place them into one medium cube stored in our closet. I think we have seven sets of small med and large in different colors and they all fit in one medium which is pretty amazing. They are always in one place, easy to find.

We have been using packing cubes for a long long time and can't remember what we did without them. Others like different ways such as the space bags but I find that the only thing that will do what I want them to do are the packing cubes for all the reasons I have listed and I will stick with those. I don't think you can go wrong in what ever you pick, you will find something to use them for that you never even thought of. Have a great trip!

Thanks for sharing your tips! I am glad I can wash the cubes in the washing machine. I would not chance it with the dryer for sure. By the way, I always folded the dirty laundry so it wouldn’t take up unnecessary space. It definitely doesn’t sound silly to me!!

:thanks:

I'm another dirty laundry folder! If you don't, then it takes up more room and won't fit back in the suitcase. Granted, it's not a neat folding, but neater than crumpling! I also use a plastic shopping bag (Target bags are my preference because they're sturdy) inside the packing cube when I put dirty laundry back in it so that the cube itself stays clean. I also re-pack the cubes with dirty laundry throughout the cruise and put them back in the suitcase under the bed - this makes last day packing so much easier!

I used to be a packing cube addict. However, I've just returned from my cruise, and I had 2 days in Miami before boarding. I was travelling solo with 1 cabin trolley and 1 bagpack for a 4 night cruise. And for both of them, I had to use a lot of force and weight to close them, while using cubes. On the day of boarding I woke up early and my PAT was at 12:00 (5 minutes away from the port). So I've spent my morning watching Marie Kondo clips on youtube to get her tips on packing. I was able to get so much more in my trolley, that I didn't even need my cubes anymore. I did use one to keep my underwear, bikini and some belts etc separate, but it wasn't necessary space-wise.

What did you do differently to make your packing better without the cubes?

Mainly by how I folded my trousers and dressers. I wore a lot of 50s style dresses on this cruise and packing a fluffy petticoat was tricky ;-) As I travelled solo, I didn't need to keep my things separated from other people, so I do think packing cubes are useful when you are trying to pack for several people in one or two suitcases. My packing cubes are very flat, which doesn't work with how Marie Kondo folds. Which is a more vertical style.

That's pretty much how I fold for my packing cubes (except DH's dress pants, I prefer to fold them over into thirds) but I can lift the cubes out and not have to 'unpack'. That's the BIG bonus for me.
I don't think it makes a big difference for me but thank you so much for sharing. I love her!

Each family member has a set of 4 medium Pro=packing cubes, which fit nicely into our carry-on bag.
We tightly roll the clothing to avoid wrinkles.

I'm also new and intrigued by the system.. Would some of you mind to post a picture of how you pack inside the cubes?
thanks a lot!

This was a trip to Vegas area for 8 days worth and included options for a few extra outfits.

It's a combination of rolling and folding depending on the items. At the top I tend to fold so I can get the packing cube flatter but at the bottom usually it's rolled items. Rolling items instead of folding can save space and it can help with creases too. In the packing cubes it does include socks and underwear as well. A cruise might be slightly different in attire but I had a pair of jeans, skorts, and capris packed in there, tank tops, 3/4 lengthed sleeved shirt, etc there's even a formal dress that doesn't need ironing at all. My bathing suit is not in the packing cubes though as it was packed in a different way. PJs however are.

Not exactly what you asked for but this might give you an idea.

We bought them a few years ago when it was predicted to be torrential rain on embarkation day. We were afraid our suit cases would get soaked being moved onto the boat, and figured it was easier to dry a suit case rather than all our close and the suite cases. Luckily it didn't rain.

WTS, we use the bags every trip now. It condenses the clothes and you have room in the suite case, and much to DH's dismay I can fit more clothes in the suit case. :P:D. I don't compress them until the night before we leave and we unpack as soon as we get the suit cases so wrinkling is not an issue. DH does not put his suit in one, that he leaves loose.

I have debated the cubes but I don't know if I would pack as much using them as I do with the compression bags.

We bought some packing cubes off amazon and stated packing this weekend for our upcoming trip. DH said "why haven't we had these all along?" definitely makes packing easier.
