It appears that this is beginning to drift from the original topic - which is the status of smoking optional buildings at OKW.

If anyone wants to discuss global warming, child behavior or noisy neighbors there are already many discussions of these topics on the Community Board and if you can't find one of the existing threads, feel free to start you own there.

Thanks.

And please, please, please make the NS rule apply to the balconies as well! I've never been in a room that's been smoked in, but I've had several stays where we couldn't use the balcony very much. It's particularly bad at AKL where you pay extra for savannah view so you can see the animals and then are driven back inside due to smokers.

I hope the buildings all go Non smoking as well. However I think they will allow smoking on the Balconys. Where else will smokers go?

reflect the % of other DVC smoking rooms:confused3

Hi,
I was trying to book my friends into building #12 at OKW last month. They are smokers. On the OKW coded map it is a smoking optional building. It is now a completely N/S building.

Also, OKW used to have 3 smoking optional buildings. Now they have 1 and a half. Those two buildings are 19 and 41. I can't remember which is the half and which is the entire building.

I can confirm that are now 1 1/2 buildings at OKW that are "smoking optional".

At this time, building 12 is entirely non-smoking. Building 19 is still entirely "smoking optional" and building 41 is about 1/2 non-smoking. The entire third floor still allows smoking (these are all 2BR villas) and the first and second floors only the left end of each floor still allows smoking (these are made up of one 2BR, one 1BR and one Studio on each floor). All others in building 41 are non-smoking. There are now 4 non-smoking 2BRs, 2 non-smoking 1BRs and 2 non-smoking Studios in building 41. (5-2BRs, 2-1BRs and 2- Studios are still smoking optional.)

These changes are the result of the number of requests for smoking/non-smoking villas at the resort.

I've updated the coded OKW map that I had made to reflect this new information. Hope that this helps everyone!

100% NS would be great as both DH and I have medical reasons for wanting this.

But, as others have said, some smokers (not all, just some) will still smoke in NS rooms and balconies. So, I agree there would need to be a hefty fine to those that don't follow the rules ($250 sounds good to me) and Disney would HAVE to take the tough guy approach to this one. Otherwise, 100% NS would be a contradiction.

aaaah Doc. You're no fun!!! :beach:

Understood. Perfectly. :upsidedow

However I think they will allow smoking on the Balconys.
Actually, smoking on balconies never has been permitted, although some (including occasional CMs) have recommended doing so to avoid confronting the problem. It's not allowed.
Where else will smokers go?
To locations where smoking IS permitted...and there are lots of places everywhere where it is perfectly legal and permissible.

I am all for the 100% NS. If Disney needs me to become the enforcement officer, I think that I can do the job. My DS4 can be my deputy. Everywhere we go, he yells, "Yuck Smoking!" He will yell it out the window of the Explorer when we are at stoplight and someone is smoking next to us.:thumbsup2
:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: Your DS and my DD4-going-on-24 are made for each other! She does the same thing, including yelling out in traffic (from my 30 MPG Lexus). She also usually adds some editorial comment, most often, "It STINKS!"

We're trying to work on her and convince her she was not put here on Earth to straighten the rest of the world out...but it's a work in progress.

So ...... my question is....... how is Disney going to handle all the owners that are smokers - don't see how they can do it. They're going to have to make some accomodation for their owners that do.

I also own Mariott's Maui Ocean Club - while Marriott hotels are now 100%non-smoking their timeshares are not at least not the Maui Ocean Club.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

First of all, I'm not one of those who believes Disney would ever go completely non-smoking...although I could offer a lot of reasons why they might want to consider doing so.

If they DID, I suspect they would simply reference long-established Florida law. Florida's Clean Indoor Air law says that all lodging rooms are non-smoking unless the hotelier specifically designates certain rooms as smoking-optional. The law also goes WAY out of its way to specifically state that hoteliers are under no obligation to make any accommodations for smokers.

As a practical matter, if Disney did go completely non-smoking in its resorts, smokers would just smoke in permitted places outside the rooms. It's really not that big a deal.

While I'm sure they will offer alternatives, they are not required to do so. And I suspect the alternatives will not be acceptable to everyone just like in the parks. Actually a number of the Marriott timeshares are going all NS and this is being encouraged by MVCI corporate. Grande Ocean will be by March and I think it's Newport Coast that just went (or is about to be) totally NS as well.

Let me first say that I don't smoke nor does anyone in my family. However, when reading the comments below, I wondered where this information came from. My son is bothered by cigarette smoke and if I complain about something, I just want to be accurate. We were at the beach this year on a non smoking floor. The people next door smoked on their balcony. When we complained, the front desk stated the "rooms" on the floor were non smoking. Guest were free to smoke outdoors. Just want to be prepared. Thanks!

Exactly. I think that is a great post. And a great concern. I know neither is a DVC, however I've read posts/heard stories of smokers/balcony issues at the Poly and AKL.

The one at the Poly, is relatively clear in my mind. The smoker was put into a N/S room. He called or went to the front desk because he did not want to smoke outside on his balcony/or terrace if he was breaking rules. And he was clearly told by the CM that he was okay to smoke there and that they didn't regulate "outside" spaces.

So this wasn't a complaint. It was a smoker checking on what to do. That says it is not merely not wanting to get involved in disputes. There was no dispute. It was a smoker just looking for information. And he said he would have followed any rule that they told him about.

Not saying I agree. Just FYI. And support for your experience.

A lot of the problem is when the CM's are telling smokers to smoke on the balcony of n/s rooms.

This happened to us at BCV in 2005 - we spent the first part of our trip at Universal - when we checked in at BCV it was 9AM - wasn't expecting to get into our room but wanted to make sure all was set up for us to be in a Smoking room. CM said no problem they had us in a 2br smoking room.

Went to Epcot and when we got back at 4pm they had changed our room and put us in n/s - boy did I complain!!!!! The CM I talked to and her manager both told my hubby and I to smoke on the balcony of the n/s room. We held our ground - specially since they told us we were in a s/o room that morning - and eventually a Smoking room became available.

I think the room assigners need to pay a little more attention to who's requesting what in this regard.

Hopefully disney will leave a small percentage
of smoking optional rooms.....Keep the stink in the room....

Housekeeping will come, and set the air freshener bomb off to get
the funk out.....at a surcharge of course...

Otherwise there will be less clean air outside....
cause thats where everyone will be smoking:confused3
