new miley cyrus video

The whole 'slut' complex is very complicated, as I don't use such words. For me, I have had the same conversation about Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Britney, etc. as about Miley. Can't they just sing and dance? No, because their talent is in question (although Christina can sing, but due to the others, she has to follow suit, or she'll lose money). Do they really need to tell us that they have a body? Oh, I didn't know that, so it's a good thing they reminded me - LOL! Seriously, it's old, tired and fake...It actually makes them less of a woman in my opinion, as they aren't able to rely on their own talents or abilities...
Tiger :)

Musicians have been using sexuality to sell their music FOREVER. I'm 43, and the female musicians of my youth (Madonna, Joan Jet, Blondie come to mind) dressed in racy clothes, and danced in a sexy manner. Back in the day, people (such as yourself) complained about Elvis and the Beatles. I'm assuming that your children are pretty young. Yes, Miley is acting on stage when she performs her new material, the same way she acted as Hannah Montana. You want her dressed for church, singing gospel tunes? That's going to sell.... How many fat, ugly, turtleneck-sporting musicians are on the top 10 list.

And think of the millions Disney made off of her... Business is business, and she's been sad having to be Hannah, but had no choice. Her teen years are almost over - let her act out a bit, like a normal teen.

not all teens "act out" - i didn't. and i know plenty of people who haven't and aren't acting out. i think the reason a lot of people do is due to self esteem issues. i dont think miley really respects herself.

i did laugh at one thing in the video. at one point, they were doing across-point which is a very basic jazz move. i haven't seen across-point in a not-rec dance class in so long...

So why did she think she would enjoy playing a young teen character marketed to 8 year olds for 4 years - someone whom she is obviously so bothered by? Because she wanted the money and fame. Some actors play the same character for 20, 30 or 50 years. She's only played it for a few short years...is it seriously that bad being Hannah Montana?
Tiger :)

She was 14! She is now almost 18! She spent almost 1/4 of her whole life playing this character, because she make the stupid mistake of signing such a long contract! What 14 year old doesn't want money and fame? :confused3 And what actor plays the same role for 50 years? :confused3 You really seem to have it in for the woman (yes, woman). Were you a big Hannah Montana fan? My dd13 was too old to even get into the whole Hannah Montana thing - even dd9 had no interest. The only fan base she had in this house was dd7, and even she is old enough to be on the fence.

I don't really care how she acts or portrays herself in her videos. I never thought she was very talented before, and I don't think she's very talented now. She's just trying to make a buck. Whatever.

Of course, if she ever tries to justify herself as a serious musician, I'll have a good laugh.

wow this thread seems to be getting a wee bit nasty.....
my DD is 14 she was a huge HM fan. And if she would admit it I think she is a closet fan now...just as I am for Wizards of Waiverly place...
Signing a contract for 4 years I would believe came from her parents. I can't imagine a 14 year old can do that without a parent agreeing.

I personally would cringe if my daughter at 17 started to dance, dress or perform like her video. I don't think that creates a superstar or shows how talented a person is. It's an act.
I think of Lady Gaga, I like her music I really like the tone of her voice. I think she can sing....but when I watch her vidoes I just shake my head. But then I also think...if she didn't do something crazy she wouldn't be where she is today. Sadly this is what the majority of the public wants. Sex sells always will. Contraversay will get you futher than being meek and mild.
Did she make a mistake? Maybe to some, to others they love it.
What cracks me up when people talk about Brittany they act like she just came on the set but she has been performing and making money since 1989 with the MM club then in 1999 she released oops I did it again. so she is going on 10 years...that has to have some type of staying power. Is it talent? Is it able to make noise in the public eye soe she continues to be talked about? I am not a fan but I just find it funny Brittany is used so much as an example and she is still making money for her singing.
Madonna was the same thing I remember hearing older people back in the 80's say she won't last this is a phase, she can't sing. I even remember howard stern asking her to sing live on his station and she made some type of comment that it was all computerized....

So if this is the undoing of Miley/Hannah so be it. But if she can find away to continue doing what she loves and people will talk about her, buy her CD's then yeah yeah...I know I will not be buying this song.......

Huh? :scared1: Because I had hoped that a young woman would not use her body as talent, I have it in for women? I don't get that...I have an opinion, just like you do, so not sure what the deal is? She signed a deal at age 13 with her parent's urging, as she was underage. I was actually hoping that as a young adult, she would actually not resort to using sex to sell...that would have been a sign of maturity to me. It might not sell as many records as she wants...oh, wait. It's working for Taylor Swift. Wonder why that is?

A big pet peeve of mine is the lack of originality in music today...just beause people have been shaking it to sell records, doesn't mean I have to endorse that. I would hope that there are some artists who realize that they don't have to shake it, in order to sell records, regardless of whether they are male or female.

Thanks, Tiger

But most do! There are thousands of very talented people out there who will never make it, and many untalented people out there who will. Taylor Swift stands out, because her situation is so rare. You think Bon Jovi would be where he is if he had a crew cut and wore a polo shirt and khakis? He is one sexy dude! It's entertainment - just because you don't find it entertaining doesn't make it not so. I don't know what you mean about music today - it's been like this for decades, since the invention of television. It's a visual industry.

We are forgetting that Miley is by far NOT the only one that is doing what she is doing. I mean come on this has been going on since we had music. Plus she is still not the only one doing it now this is not a new concept. she is just trying to do what everyone else is doing to stay in the game. I do think she has talent in her own way. I like this song and party in the usa. My dd on the other hand didn't like it and that is her choice. Just like it is your choice not to like her music or her as an artist but that doesn;t mean her have to rip her apart. If you don;t like her or her music than don't listen your choice.

I just don't understand why certain people have to make it in a bigger deal than what it is. I mean I could understand if she was the only one that is doing this but she is not nor will she be the last.

My point is that IF you don;t like her or her music that DO NOT listen to her but don;t make it out to be the end of the world! !

The ironic thing about the video (and song lyrics) is that it is heck of alot more tame than ALOT of other artists songs and videos are.

i certainly hope and pray that my kids don't "act out" like that when they are teenagers.

That is very very VERY wishful thinking.

I don't like how people are calling her a slut because she's wearing a leotard, and she wears short shorts, etc. if we go by that logic, then little girls in ballet classes are sluts, all those people at the beach are sluts with their bathing suits, almost all high school girls are sluts, and yes, you are a slut too when you're cleaning around the house wearing a tank top and shorts. Come on guys, a slut means someone who is promiscuous, and what does that have to do with what someone wears?

I wasn't a fan of the video (just a little too weird for me..) but I did like the song.

She's not my favorite performer (I don't think she has too much talent, jmo!) but I'd rather have "Miley" than "Hannah Montana"..

I thought of this thread today because Miley's video was mentioned in an article in the NY Times business section. Apparently there have been other parents upset with it. I didn't realize her label is owned by Disney. Here's a quote from the article:

"Hollywood Records, Ms. Cyrus’s label, is owned by Disney. Although she personally paid most of the video’s cost, the label at the least oversaw its creation and distributed it.

It’s not uncommon for divisions of media conglomerates to work against one another — except at Disney, which aggressively extols its companywide synergy to investors.

So, given Disney’s strict franchise management, how could one division participate in the creation and distribution of a product that could imperil one of the company’s most valuable properties? Disney declined to comment beyond a statement: “Miley, at 17, is now making creative choices as a solo recording artist that reflects her own personal style and vision. Miley was 12 years old when she began portraying the fictional character of Hannah Montana who continues to be beloved by millions of Disney Channel fans.”

Ugh. I'm not a fan of this video at all. I'm the same age as her and I view that as too racy and i am by no means sheltered or conservative or whatever people like to call it. She's 17 and she's dancing around wearing not much and singing lyrics that are suggestive. Its not appropriate. Her main fan base is young teens and tweens. She should be a role model. That video and lyrics are things that most kids i know would refer to as trashy or skanky. She needs to clean it up a bit and actually act her age.

It's good we have a teen's view here among all us older folks!:thumbsup2
