They offer to sell you a room at $1. You buy it. You enter a contest to win a hotel. You get a 1099. I know for sure you do not pay sales tax on the going rate, which some have said.

I get rooms on Priceline all the time for a fantastic deal. I don't get a 1099 for the true value. How is this any different?

Because as those who have been successful are reporting, they don't actually charge you a dollar. They send you your confirmation page and it says that it is free with some quirky remark about "tip your bellhop" or something. They are GIVING you the hotel stay, but tricking you into thinking you're getting a cheap rate.

ok- question on chatango- i signed up for an account but it's still logging me out every 25 minutes- what do i do?

I also had this problem. At the bottom right hand corner of the chatango page there is something that says "set your name" or some such, click on it and that's where you need to sign in to stay signed in on the chat forum. Hope that helps.

I am just telling you what a read in a posted email from LMT Customer Service that was a million pages ago. The gist is that this is being treated as a sweepstakes or contest and therefore it is different. Not everyone will be able to buy a room at this special price where as on Priceline anyone can go do it.

Then keep a copy of the rate they offer. If I get a 1099, which I do not believe I will, then submit that as what rate was available at the time. Regardless of what they say the retail value is, you have documentation of the price at the time being lower.

(And also remember, the price they paid for the room is less than what it is being offered for at their regular rate. )

I started today at 1:45 a.m. EST trying to win. It's now 7:39 and I....am....falling....asleep. :guilty: How much longer??? I'm ready to take a Tylenol PM and sleep for hours and hours.

Okay I am bummed. I had decided to try for something within driving distance for my Birthday. Well when I click on the more info to try to figure out which hotel it might be. The hotels keep telling me they are not available for my dates.

way at the bottom of the right hand side there is something to click on and it then says "Log Out" as the words instead of whatever it said before. Sorry I've been logged into that thing since Thursday so I'm not sure what it said before.

thanks- i got it- it said "set name" in case anyone else needs to log in. i don't want it to log me out while I'm not pyaing attention and then I miss the pops!

Any idea why they keep sending me the same email over and over again?

Since I'm stuck here, DH has taken his chance to cook. Of course he is deep frying shrimp because I rarely do. Now his already high cholesterol will be higher and my house stinks.

I am seeing that this is ending up to be a contest, but don't they have to spell all of that out in advance, and let you know that you will be expected to pay taxes on it? Every sweepstakes I have seen says that plainly in the rules...all prizes are subject to tax and are the responsibility of the winner. They are deceiving people into buying for $1, then switching to free..which most people will say, "Oh boy, that's great!" and not..."No, no, no, you said $1/night, and that's what I am going to pay". which would relieve them of the tax responsibility.:confused3

If you pay for something even a penny it has been discounted to sell to you. And they take the loss. If they GIVE IT to you at no charge it is like you won a lottery. You have to claim it on income taxes.

Has anybody actually been charged a dollar yet?

I did get my room, last week. I am not worried in the least.

What I'm curious about in the tax issue, how are they saying that the rooms are free when some people are having their cards declined? I mean why are they charging the cards at all!

They can be using just to be assured someone is an adult or do verify a mailing address, there were posts that the $7 charges were reversed from last week.
