New dog, upset cat

I would use baby gates for sure to keep the dog away from the cat. I would be annoyed if I were that cat too.

Poor cat...Why did you you let the dog keep going back to the already annoyed cat? :confused3 That dog would have been told "NO" and been in the crate for harassing the cat. We have 3 dogs and 4 cats and the dogs aren't allowed to chase the cats!

I am likely going to get a baby gate ... it is hard with two floors and I want our cat to gradually come back to being with us on any floor level she wants to be. The dog is going to be on main and upper for now and we'll gate the basement, where the cat is currently hiding. I didn't "let" the dog go back and forth ... the dog started and until we managed to grab the leash and leash her and then crate her it happened. She was put in the crate to calm down and to "get herself together". I didn't let it go without any discipline.

Agreed!! I have a Border Collie/Corgi mix (strong working drive) and he is super smart and picks up on things super quick!

She seems to be picking things up super quick! She is already sitting and she has almost stopped the jumping up, except when we first arrive home and she is excited to see me. She knows to go to her kennel for bed, not a peep all night, no housebreaking issues at all either. She is settling in gradually.

I tried the leash thing around my waist for one day and it seemed to help. We have done it occasionally - it has only been three days now. She has also worn her leash through the house so we have it at easy grab.

I am concerned that the cat is making her so excited. She is looking for her. I don't know if she has ever even seen a cat before. So this will be a learning experience for all of us. I think she was wanting to play, but of course the cat has no interest in that. I think the cat will graduall come around as she is a very loveable cat that loves to cuddle and loves her "supper" each day. So hopefully some separation will help cool things down a bit around here.

Just give it some time. Sounds like you are on the right track.

The cat has to see you keep the dog under control and the dog has to learn the rules.

Whether they become "best friends" or not, dog will learn what is allowed eventually.:thumbsup2
