New “Key To Disneyland” interactive experience coming May 16th

Disney posted a new video of the key up on FB today. It looks kind of fun, but seems way too expensive for just 1 pin. Also, as other people have mentioned, there could be a chance of duplicates so the pins might be hard to collect. My daughter used to love surprise toys and even getting duplicates on a toy that cost $3.99 was annoying.

I have some thoughts about this:
  1. My family (with 2 kids ages 16 and 18) are clearly not the target market for this product.
  2. BUT if my kids were, say, 4 and 6? Oh my kids would be all over this.
  3. One gigantic key will cost more than a Magic Band.
  4. At Magic Kingdom in WDW, they have this pirate treasure hunt that doesn't cost anything. Did this with my kids about 6 yr ago. It was super fun. But I wouldn't be willing to shell out $60 x 2 kids for something like that. Because...if you have >1 kid, you KNOW that they aren't going to want to share the giant key.
  5. $50 says that at some point, SOMEBODY will be walking around the park with one of those on a lanyard Flavor Flav style.
  6. If Disney's goal is to get families with younger kids to come back to the parks, this isn't a bad idea to entice people to be return visitors.

I am pretty sure someone is eventually going to figure out how to break into the compartment, because human nature is what it is.
Saw on Instagram/TikTok there is a pinhole reset button to open the compartment and activate all lights and sounds, which is also used if you're unable to complete the stations.

Disney wouldn't want to send guests home with a $60 key unable to get pin paid for.

Yeah, it's like the paid scavenger hunts with the pin at the end (I think WDW has one). You are basically buying the pin, and you can claim the "prize" even if you don't complete the game.

Plus, MBs have an actual purpose in life.
If you have an Apple watch its utility is moot... not sure I'm willing to buy a band just for "freebies". I'm disappointed they went this way for what amounts to slips of paper.
Are you saying that you can just swipe an Apple Watch past a Magic Band reader? You don't have to tap through options on the Disneyland app to bring up your LL reservation first?

Even if that's true, most people don't have Apple Watches, so the MB is a much cheaper option to getting out your smartphone.

Apple Watches do not work as MB at Disneyland. They do at WDW.

I might get one if I can convince my kids to share LOL. They're 13 and 9 so maybe there is a small hope of sharing. I definitely don't want to spend $120 on 2 of them.

Tell them you are doing it as a family. Have them take turns inserting they key. You can all enjoy the lights and other effects. The issue of course will be the pin and who gets it. I guess one way around it is that they each get to choose any pin they want at the pin store.

Yes, but from the below it sounds like that only works in Florida? I guess I did not know that - I must have just used my phone last year. I'm used to using it for a bunch of stuff at home so it must not have registered in my memory, sorry for my mistake!

Disneyland doesn't offer Magic Mobile. That is only at WDW.

Yes, but MagicBands have a much more limited utility at Disneyland than they do at WDW, especially for locals. My thought process was that this is a way to get more people to buy a MagicBand, because in this hypothetical scenario you can use the MagicBand to do this special activity and there's a tangible collectible prize at the end. Once you get people (especially locals) investing in the technology, you can update/change the pins every so often. Announce on social media/other places, we have a new set of pins we are launching on date _____.

My 11 year old is uninterested. My sister and I have to decide if it's worth it to get one to "share." I'd probably let her keep the pin, because she collects pins. Whereas, I just found my Hogwarts After Dark pin in a cupboard, because I have no idea what else to do with it....I probably should just give that to her too....
