Hubby and I leave in three weeks for our first adult only trip in 20 years. Anniversary trip. We are taking my dads new 5th wheel trailer and his new truck. Very nerve wracking. I am very positive about FW thanks to these boards but it is our first time camping {if that is what you call it in a vehicle like this}. If I can shake the guilt about not taking the kids I will be fine. Just means more souveniors for them. To make long story short thnks to these boards for all the insight.

Make sure you have your dad walk thru everything on the 5er with both of you, so you know how to get it setup for camp when you pull in. Also, if you can, find a big parking lot and spend some time practicing backing up - you have to back into the sites at FW, so some ability to back a trailer is very useful.

Enjoy!!!

I understand where you are coming from on the guilt about not having kids.

DH and I went for the first time in 20 years by ourselves in 1999. I never felt so funny in my life, but believe me you will enjoy it very much.

My wife and I went in 99 for our 24th anniversary. Both of my college age boys stayed home. This was our fifth trip to DW, but our first without them.
We are going back this summer and as a graduation gift to one of them, we are bringing both of them, plus both of thier girlfriends, and I couldn't be happier to be able to do it.
I told them that the one time we went without them, it was just a scouting trip for this summer.

thanks for the encouragment. We don't have to practice with the backing up or anything cuz hubby has CDL and been manuvering fullsize firetrucks since before we met. Got the complete checklist from dad so I guess we are ready. Upside is all that extra room to bring home the souveniors <IMG WIDTH="15" HEIGHT="15" SRC="/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif" alt="razz">

Our trip to FW last year was our first "big" camping trip. We had bought a camper late in the summer the year before and had only done a few local camping trips to state parks. The thought of towing the camper that far....ugh! I lost alot of sleep over that.
The morning came for us to leave. Wouldn't you know it had snowed the night before and we had to clean off the van and camper! The roads were sloppy and I 95 was wet and had been salted. What a mess! About 2 hours into the trip, the wiper blade flew off the van (you needed them on at all times with all that mess!)
We pulled into a rest area...and paid $15 for one blade!!! Got back onto the road and as the sun came up (we leave in the middle of the night), so did the wind!
We couldn't go more than 40 since the wind was pushing us all over the road. I could not wait to stop in Florence SC for the night. It was such a relief to be parked.
The next day the sun came up and the weather was perfect! We got to FW, got settled in and had a wondereful time.
All my worrying had been for nothing. We were all safe and sound. Thank goodness DH was driving! He also used to drive trucks!

Sending a little pixie dust your way to brighten up your day!

DH and I went to WDW last November after a friend very kindly offered to have our two boys (13 & 16) stay with her. It was the first time we had ever taken a vacation together without the kids and at first it felt odd not to have them with us. Although we thought about them all the time, DH and I had a great time. It was so nice to be able to do whatever we wanted without having to take the kids into consideration. Have a great trip!! :D
