need to replace kenmore refrigerator door - sticker shock! Available anywhere else?

refrigerator door has major cosmetic damage. It is only a year old. I was gonna eat the cost and replace it thinking it would be $200 max. I did not think the door alone would cost more than half the cost of the appliance thru sears - this is highway robbery! Are there any other resources I can check? Or any way to just replace the outside shell - of course sears says no must replace entire door unit.

I'm curious as to the type of damage your fridge has after only a year. Scratches/dents ??? I just bought a Kenmore fridge with a contoured door.

Only thing I can think of is maybe an Auto Body repair guy.

An extra half shelf for my new refrigerator was about $75, I think, but so worth it. I'm assuming you are going through Sears Parts Direct or whatever it's called. Unless you find a used fridge on sale on Craigslist and are able to swap out the door, I don't think you're going to find a cheaper vendor for a replacement door. If it needs repainting, I have heard of the auto body shop idea also.

Did someone attack your refrigerator, or was it simply magnet scratches? We had our old refrigerator and freezer covered with magnets, but I've refused to allow anything on the front of the new appliances we bought earlier this year.

"someone" tried to push it thru an opening that it was not intended to go thru... enough said. Sears also says they can only replace the whole door and not just the panel. I am sorry I don't believe this.

More than a few magnet marks. I am missing paint and I have dents - so not happy

$615.49 plus shipping plus tax to replace only a door.... seriously?!

It won't help you now, but if you ever move your refrigerator again, take the house doors off and the appliance doors off. That's the way they had to deliver our refrigerator and our freezer. I had measured beforehand and knew to tell the installers to be prepared for the tight clearances.

If the fridge is not the type with interchangeable color panels, I am not surprised that Sears is only able to sell you a complete door. Any electronics in the door would only add to the cost.

Is it a textured or smooth finish? If it's smooth, I'd call an auto body shop and ask for a quote. They could bondo the dents and spray it. You can remove the door and take it to them.

OP, you don't say what type it is. Side by side, 3 door??? Black/ stainless??
Can you put one of those magnetic covers on the door. They come is sheets if it's stainless, or even decorative pictures.

ohhh you guys are giving me ideas. Its a plain black kenmore door - like a flat finish not real shiney. There are no electrics - completely smooth but several long scratches removing paint from the top to the bottom

Can you get some black touch up auto paint and touch up the scratches? It might make it more bearable to look at. I also agree to check with an autobody place. I remember on the Trading Spaces tv show on TLC that they often used auto paint on appliances, and occasionally (if the budget allowed) they'd have a body shop do the work/painting.
