Need opinion on our future sons name...

We have some friends with a son named Braxton, like Braxton Hicks contractions, Jester is along those lines, POOR KID! Why do parents think it is cool and sophisticated to give their kids stupid names that the poor kid will have to live with for the rest of their life????? We have some other friends that have named their boys after Baseball equipment manufacturers, Easton and Macray, oh, there is an M name for you.

Ok, I looked at a name your baby website and you are right, M names for boys are really hard. Maybe something more traditional like Matthew or Michael or Max?

I had to chuckle, my girlfriend's granddaughter is named Braxton. For something I never thought of as a first name I didn't know it could be either male or female!

One more to add to the list.........Moreton, I've a cousin who has Moreton as a middle name, I quite like it, not your everyday name, but not wacky either.

I kinda like the name Miller for a boy. Its different, but not so much that people with go "huh?". I like the idea of using names that aren't too common and over used. If you dont like the name, dont use it. But dont not use it because you think kids will make fun of his name. Trust me, kids will find something to make fun of everyones name no matter what.

There's a little boy on DS's team called Mackie. He's referred to as either Mackie or Mac. It suits him to a T.

Personally, I like Miller.

don't try to make a kid stand out because of his name. raise him to stand out on his own. especially with a boy. he needs a strong name. it will influence his whole life. girl names you can play with. we had neighbors that had a 'MacKinnley' and a 'Chandler' (from 'Friends'). good luck to those boys. don't give a boy 2 last names, IMO.

I've always liked the name Mason and it was one of the choices we had when I was pregnant - but then I had a girl.

A good friend of mine has a son called Mason and it really suits him! I have another friend who has a Mitchell and my DH's name is Mark - I like all of these! Oh and Michael of course - my late Dad's name and one that doesn't really age. A person of any age sounds fine with the name Michael!

I don't like Miller though!

I'm a Southerner, have three boys and my maiden name is Miller, and we never considered the name. My youngest child had a friend named Miller when he was in preschool, though. After initially finding it odd that they chose that name when it was not a family name, it kind of grew on me.

I don't think the beer thing is really that big a deal. I can't remember ever getting that reference. I'd give up the "M" thing, though. If it were me, "M" would be the last letter his name would begin with.

I love using the Social Security website for name ideas. You can see what names were truly popular in the last year nationwide and statewide according to SS registration.

Miller is a very traditional (and very common) Amish and Mennonite surname. That may or may not influence your decision to use it.

I didn't read the entire thread, but from what I've read I suppose I'm odd because I actually like Miller. No matter what you name your son, children will find some way to make fun of the name. That's what kids do. Our DS is named Colin. I actually had to work on DH a bit for that name because he didn't want DS to be called colon.

I bought another book last night, called the Baby Name Wizard, which not only gives you a list of names, but then tells you the brother and sister names that compliment it. Believe it or not, Mason fit us to a "t." The sister compliment was Madison, and also some other girl names we were considering if we had a girl. Looks like while I can't convince DH to stray away from the M names, I might have won the Miller battle.

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now. I would really love to stray from the M's and go with one of these names, but I got my way w/ DD's name, so it looks like this is DH turn.

While Mason seems like it might be the way to go NOW, I'm sure everything will change 500 times before this baby is born. We had our DD name picked out the entire pregnancy, and I changed it in the hospital!!

Miller is growing on me. Sounds like a lot of the name you like are traditional last names. I have a friend whose sons are named Dawson and Carter - and they fit them to a "T." I have another friend who named her son Mackade - and they call him Mac.

If you really can't find any "M" names you like, don't worry about it. Just think of the turmoil you will feel if you name this one an "M" name and then have another child. How will you ever come up with ANOTHER "M" name that you like?

I kind of like Miller but then again I did what most people don't like and I used a last name as a first name for my son. His name is Jackson and he is called Jackson (not Jack). It fits him to a "T". BTW--it is NOT a family name or we are not Southerners. We just love the name Jackson.

Don't worry what others think. Name your baby what you like! If others think it is 'weird" so be it.

I don't like the name Michael or Matthew. I don't know why, just don't care for those names, never have.
But then the world would be kind of boring if all the boys/men were named Michael or Matthew.

For "M" male names the only one I can think of that I like, besides Miller, , is Mitchell.

I hate common names. No Michaels or Christophers for us! It's not that they are bad names, I just don't want my kids to be one of 15 Davids in their graduating class.

I also don't like weird names. DS has had a Jagger, Titan, Baylor in his classes. Names that make everyone go "huh?" just aren't my taste.

Then there is the trendy which I also try to avoid. No Taylor/Tyler, Aiden's or Jackson's for us. Again, not bad names, I just don't want one in every class while growing up. (I say this, but DS#1 has a trendy name [became so just as I named him-ugh! & suddenly gender neutral too} and DS#3 also has a trendy name [we had been looking at it for years before trendiness & it was the only one we both agreed on]).

Now, as far as Miller goes, I actually kind of like it. Other M names: McCoy, Macallister, McKade, Malcolm, Malachi, Marshall, Montgomery, Morley.

Hey, if you don't like Miller, what about the nickname Mills? Or using Miles as the nickname? Of course, the most obnoxious kid in my high school was Miles. I also have two Masons on my street and another 3 in DS's preschool.

Whatever name you chose, make sure it is a name YOU like. Everyone isn't going to like any one single name. And in time, that will be the most perfect name because it is your child's name. And any name can be made fun of. And if not a name, it will be a feature or a personality trait.

People should not use surnames as first names unless one parent is a Southerner and it is a family name (such as the mother's maiden name).

Gee, I didn't get that memo.

I like all the names on your list (and Mason too)

We've never picked just one name beforehand. We go in with a short list and then decide which "fits" best after the baby arrives.

Another idea that one of my brothers and his wife did was go to the grandparents. They asked each grandparent to write down their 3 favorite names. It was names they had never thought about and ended up using two of the names off of the list.

You can do this with any of your family members or friends.
