Last year I took my 6 year old daughter to WDW, and she loved splash mountain and thunder mountain. We went on those 2 many times that stay. She over heard other kids talking about space mountain, and asked me if we could go on. I said no.

The truth is I've never been on it!! I am scared too!! I love most up and down type rollercoasters, and some upside down ones, when there are OUTSIDE, and I can see what's going to happen to me! I also can get motion sickness, and space mountain warns people about that.

How bad is the ride????? If it was outside, and you could see the track, would you concider it a big rollercoaster?? Is it completely in the dark, or are there alot of flashing lights on the ride? I really don't like flashing lights like those strobe (sp?) lights.
How long does the ride last??

I want to take her on it this sept., but not sure if I can handle it, LOL!! If I take motion sickness pills, will it help me???? It works for me on airplane rides.

Any advice or tips on this ride would be great.

Not too big. My 7 year old is not into roller coasters but wanted to do this. It does not loop the loop, there are some drops but not too big. She loved it and if the q had been shorter she would have rode again. It is in the dark and lights do flash but its not too bad. The only worry I had with taking my daughter on for the first time was the seating arrangements. There are four people in each car (or rocket) and two cars are joined together. You sit one behind each other (my daughter likes you to put your arm around her were shes doing a ride for the first time) I sat behind her so I could talk to her and she was fine.
Im sure she will be fine

If it was outside. . I don't think I would concider it a 'big rollercoaster' at all. It is quite dark, and I think that makes it seem much worse than it actaully is. There are quite a bit of flashing lights at the beginning, so be careful of that, since you said you usally don't enjoy it much.
In my opinion, it is more exciting than Thunder Mountain (due to the dark and lights), but not much tougher.

I think Space Mountain is rather tame and I too cannot handle too much in the roller coaster department! I think it could be compared to Thunder Mtn. RR as far as intensity. It is, however, in the dark. What I can remember is, when you go up the first incline, there is strobbing light. Then it is mostly darkness with the effect of an occassional "shooting star". Hope this helps.

I am a chicken for most rides but my daughter convinced me to go on Space Mountain this past April. I really enjoyed it. In fact we walked right back on it that day as it wasn't crowded. If you can stand a roller coaster that goes upside down this will be nothing. Good luck and have fun.

My ds does not even want to go on it anymore. He says it is not exciting anymore because he has gone on all other types of roller coasters. If you want before you go on the ride go on the tomorrowland transit authority. It goes through space mountain and you can see a little, not much. The entire ride lasts two and a half minutes with peak speeds of 28 miles per hour.

I’ve only rode it once. Apparently, there are two parallel tracks – one has more curves and one has more “hills and valleys”. We were on the “up and down” track and I was the first one in the car. It is very dark and there are flashing lights which I guess you could imagine to be shooting stars and such. My eyes were closed much of the time, though!

I had read in Birnbaum’s Disney guidebook that the ride only goes 28 miles per hour, but you’ll never prove that to me! :sad2: I would say the ride is about 2 minutes or so, but it seemed longer to me. I love Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, so I can only attribute my fear to the darkness.
Too much “tricking the senses”, so to speak. Seeing the track ahead helps my brain (and stomach! :guilty: ) process what to expect. By blocking out that sense, I did feel somewhat queasy. It did not last long, however – a few minutes at best.

I will say that being in the front car made it possible to see little portions of the track sometimes and when I couldn’t see the track, I knew we were probably going DOWN! :scared1:

And though I continue to ride Splash and Thunder, I’m not planning another trip on Space. Kudos to the millions of folks who enjoy it……you have my admiration!

My DH and dd-8 thought Space Mountain jerked them around too much. Both get motion sickness and my dd did come off if it saying that her tummy kind of felt funny. She really loved Splash Mountain and Big Thunder RR, but her all time fav was Rock N Roll Coaster over at MGM. Both DH and DD really really loved that one. They both said it was so smooth and neither felt sick on that one. It is inside too...and of the two, they loved the RRC much much better.

Ride the TTA - you can get a small idea of what SM is like as you ride thru it.

First let me start by saying that I'm not a coaster enthusiast, nor am I real brave. I'll try "most" rides but I have been called a chicken by my husband.

I would consider Space Mountain a very tame roller coaster. I think it only reaches a maximum speed of 28 mph. There aren't any huge drops, it more or less winds down from the top, much like Big Thunder Mountain. There is one drop that I would actually call a "drop" but it's not that bad. If anything, it's BUMPY. The fact that it is in the dark does make it fun and interesting, but not scary. On a scary scale, 5 being totally frightening and 1 being totally tame I would give Space Mountain a 3 at best.

It's a great ride, a real classic. Don't miss it!

whatever you do do not lift your arms as most people do on roller coasters. The tracks are all very close to each other. If you every get stuck and htey have to turn on the lights you can see how interwoven all the tracks truely are...thats what scares me about the ride. My brother actually hit his hands one time.... :earseek:

edited to say: i def approve of this ride. You will both be fine and have a wonderful time! It's lots of fun!

Hi! I would let your daughter ride it if she wants to. The largest drop on Space is not as big as the one on Splash and it mostly just has small hills and fast turns. I don't like the seating arrangements much because you are sitting alone, but other than that it's not so bad. There are lots of strobe-type lights, but I keep my eyes closed anyway! :flower:

my friend is terrified of heights and of coasters. She went of Space mountain and LOVED it! She thought she was gonna be brave and went on Rockin Roller Coaster and thought she was gonna die! I guess it really just depends on your own personal preference. I like SM. It does shake you up alot just because it's not a smooth or fast ride, but I don't think it's scary at all.

Space Mountain is one of the coasters I used to get myself worked up to doing the bigger ones. I did BTMRR, then Space, then RnRC. Space is a very mild thrill. If you have your child sit in the front & you sit behind her, you can talk to her & see a little bit of the track. I think the right side is a little lighter, allowing you to see more of what's coming.

I am prone to motion sickness on planes & boats, so I assumed I would need something for Space, so I took bonine the first few times, then took ginger capsules only, now nothing & it doesn't bother me a bit. I have also switched to taking nothing for the other WDW coasters, but still take something if I'm going to other parks for mega coaster riding...

It's worth a try. If you are worried about motion sickness, take a bonine/dramanine/ginger capsule or whatever works for you. I bet you'll find you really won't need it. As a fellow Queasy Rider tho, I firmly believe that it's better to be sfef than sorry, esp the first time.

Our eldest DS10 won't do coasters in the dark as a rule - he likes to know where he is going. But he will ride Space Mountain and our DS7 also went on it this year. It is a relatively tame rollercoaster in the dark.

A six year old on space mountain, you need to have your head examined....... :rolleyes1

Space Mountain is VERY tame. I was expecting it to me a lot more thrilling of a ride. When it was over, we all looked at each other and said, that's it????? It is less thrilling of a ride then the old fashoned wooden roller coasters you see at older amusement parks.

As with most Disney attractions, it's the atmosphere more than the ride itself that makes it special.

As a roller coaster, Space Mountain isn't bad (compared to the roller coasters I've been on at Hersheypark, King's Dominion, etc.). It has the expected drops and turns, but it isn't a violent ride. The biggest thrill to me is that the ride isn't so bad that I can actually look around and enjoy the environment. I notice different things each time, and I get a bigger appreciation for the thought that went into its creation.

As a side story, I took my 6 year old on her first roller coaster ride this past Sunday. At first she was scared and didn't want to do it. We showed her the ride, and I told her it was the first roller coaster I rode as a kid. That convinced her to go. After the first ride, she was hooked! Later, she was bragging to people in another line how she went on a roller coaster.

It all varies from person to person, but I feel like trying everything at least once. I wouldn't call myself a thrill seeker, but I don't want to miss out on something I may truly enjoy. If I don't like it, I'll know that to do it again (a painful lesson some times, but at least I know instead of speculating).

Not sure any of that helps. Whatever your choice, be happy with it (after all you are on vacation).

Aparently you need to mind your own bussiness! I would like to know where I said I was taking my 6 year old on space mountain??

You need your head examined.
