I was wondering what month is The Animal Lodge at the cheapest rates possible. Also, I will have 3 children with me including my husband. Should I get a standard room then when we arrive ask to see if we could get a bump up or should I go straight into getting the best room possible?

rooms are priced by season not by month - value season is the cheapest.
You can see Rack Rates here
but I would suggest watching mousesavers or this board for discounts that may become available

Value Season is Value Season: January 1 - February 16, July 5 - October 4, November 27 - December 19

We booked a Standard room and were given a Savannah room - I think that happens quite often, but having had a Savannah Room I wouldn't go back to a Standard room, I think the Savannah is the big attraction of this hotel and i would be disappointed if I didn't get a view - but $80 extra a night is a lot, so only you can decide if it's worth it.

PS - are you describing your DH as a child? (understandable ;) ) or will you have 5 in a room - I don't think a normal room will take 5 unless one is an infant

AKL sleeps only 4 to a room, unless one of the children is under the age of 3.

You might check out these resorts that can sleep 5:
PO-R
The Contemporary
The Polynesian
The Grand Floridian
The Beach Club
The Yacht Club
The Boardwalk
The Cabins at Fort Wilderness
or look into renting DVC points for your stay.

I stayed at AKL in August (value season) and I think I paid $137 a night including tax with a general public code. I booked standard view and that is what I got. I wouldn't be expecting an upgrade. If you really want a savanna view, book it. The standard view was a great value. The room was nice and in a good location (close to the front of the building). If I wanted to see animals, I just had to walk a few feet down the hall.

The baby will be 1 by the time we go, so he will either be in a crib, pack in play, or in between us (haha!). I thought it might be fun for the girls ages 4 and 6 to sleep in the bunk beds. I was just trying to find a hotel that was more for the children. I thougth one of the Boardswalks would be nice, but they are out of our price range.
