Need help potty training!

My DD was #1 trained a good six months before she was trained with #2.it was a very emotional thing for her. She just was not ready to have that experience. I kept her in underwire (even at night as her diaper was dry every morning from the time she was two) and has her help clean herself up when we had an accident. When I could tell she was more ready, we did a reward chart with some prizes she wanted. First it took three times, then five, then ten. By then we had no accidents, and things were fine.

I remember when I stressed about this time of our life, it helped me to learn that the average child is not fully potty trained until 3 1/2 to 4 years of age. And since DD started school I have learned that it is still common for those in Kindergarten to have accidents. I know our school office keeps new underwire and clothes for accidents. So when I was worried about having a hard time with my 2/3 yr old, I realized that she was totally normal and I was putting unneeded stress on both of us. Really helped me fell less of a failure!

One of my kids went through this. I would put a diaper on her for nap time and that's when she'd poop. To avoid constipation issues, I told her that she could ask for a diaper when she needed to poop, but she still had to be in the bathroom (instead of playing or watching TV) because that's where people go to poop. We gradually progressed from pooping in a diaper while standing in the bathroom, to loosening the diaper enough to wear it while sitting on the potty, to pooping on the potty without the diaper. It probably took a couple of weeks, but it worked.
