I would really like to get a home security system and am looking for some advice from people experienced with this.....

- What is a "reasonable" monthly fee?
- Should I expect free installation of the system?
- Which company do use and would you recommend them?
- Which amenities are essential and which are a waste of money? (ie. battery back up/remote controls etc...)

I have Guardian. It depends on where you are, I guess.
I pay $31.95 a month.
Installation was "free" unless you wanted more than 2 doors.
We added 2 more doors and a lot of windows. I think it was around $1500 for the complete installation.
We do not use the remotes. One of them has a dead battery, and we never replaced it.
I recommend the battery back up. When our power was out for 3 days this fall, we still had the security system on.
Mine is used for medical purposes, so I the peace of mind is worth it to me. Thank goodness we have never had to use it.
It also has a chime alert for whenever your door is opened, it just makes a little noise, not an alarm. Good for little kids who like to wander....
I will warn you... if your alarm goes off for any reason, it is truly a HORRIBLE noise. It makes my 6year old throw up, but he is very sensitive to loud noises.
Good luck with your decision.

We have ADT and we pay 37.00 a month. We also had to pay to have it installed but when we move, they are supposed to install our next one for free. They were trying to bill us quarterly but my DH refused, and kept us on a monthly billing cycle. (Just so you know that you CAN choose)

My Mom has another company and she only pays 17.00 a month. Whatever it is, it works because they had to call me last week when her alarm went off & she was out of town. You are smart to shop around. ;)

I have ADT, pay $34.95 a month, paid like a $95 start up fee which included the first month, and have all doors sensored, motion detectors, back up battery, and keychain remotes. I do not like their service. Not even 3 months after install we had a problem with a contact sensor on one of the doors. They changed the batteries and said that was it. Well 2 weeks later, the same problem occurred again. So we had them come out again and this time the guy was like "you need a new sensor so I will be back next week to fix it". The very next day we get a bill in the mail for two service call fee's. Mind you we have maitenance on the system and the system isn't even a year old yet. I called them to dispute and they said they would only take off one fee. Whatever. So the guy comes and fixes the sensor and were good for the next 2 months. Then we were outta town and had a power outage. Come home to find the alarm system dead. Called to see what was going on, they said the backup battery will recharge in 48 hours after power is restored. I asked how come I didn't get a phone call to let me know that our system was down and was told, "we don't call residental customers". So I asked how I was to know our system had a problem, and he said we mailed out a letter. Well thats great, I'll be sure and read that while I'm outta town so that I can have my brother go and check on the house while were gone. I am counting down the days until our 3 yr contract is up and then its bye bye ADT. I've heard good thinks about Brinks so perhaps I'll look into them. But all I know is that ADT is out of the question.

We had alarm system in house when we bought it. We hooked up to monitoring for about $30 per month. The few times that the alarm went off by mistake, no one called right away from the alarm company (I guess they wait for you to call them to say it was set off by mistake).

The whole reason I wanted to activate the alarm was so that in case of something in the middle of the night. Then I realized, no one would come from police or alarm company before something terrible could happen to me or my family.

So, we discontinued the monitoring (saving $30 per month) but still use the alarm hook up every night.

If the alarm is ever set off middle of the night, I will immediately call 911 and that way guarantee help arrives quickly.

We don't activate alarm during the day.

We have Slomins. About $30/month (billed qtrly).
We got free installation.
Our ranch home has a carport. We were standing under the carport and we could smell smoke. The smoke alarm went off (which is att. to the security system). We called Slomin's and told them we smelled smoke but searched in the attic and couldn't find anything. They said to call the fire dept. We didn't want to since we couldn't see anything but we hesitantly did place a call. The fire crew showed up and found there was a BIG branch which fell on the transformer that was about 60 yards from our house and the transformer was frying the wood and that's what we smelled burning. The smell just kind of "hung" under the carport and that's why it was so noticeable there even though the transformer was on the other side of the house.

All the considerations in cutting the budget - after that day - we never thought we'd stop the Slomins security! Worth it for the fire protection piece of mind if nothing else!

We have 1 remote control - never use it; however, our housewatcher is a little intimidated by the control station so we just give them the remote when we're away and all they have to do is push the button to alarm/deactivate it. So it helps if someone's coming in that's not used to pushing a few buttons. Otherwise, don't bother. IMHO

The biggest thing is changing your mindset so you ALWAYS alarm your house WHEN YOU WALK OUT THE DOOR!

Slomins offers a bonus to current patrons for recommending others. If someone you know has Slomins, be a pal and give them a bonus by going through them. ;)

good luck!

I've had ADT in the past. We had it for about five years. The only problems I encountered were: the remote on the key chain was red, very intising to any toddler. The alarm goes off and if you can't get to the phone and dail ADT and they call you local police dept., if they have already been notified, then they are already on their way, and yes, usually not very happy when they get there and find it was only a false alarm. Another fault in the system is that is goes by phone line. so if someone does break into your house, if they know you have this type of security system, they could just cut your phone line from outside and ADT will never get the signal. Lastly, one morning I woke up and there were a few messeges on my machine from the adt and police asking if everything was OK. I guess that night I forgot to bring my phone upstaris w/me. I guess what must of happened was that when we locked all the doors that night, that garage door leading to the house was shut enough so the alarm showed all doors were shut, but with the wind, it blew open. This set off the house alarm. I work nights, and b/c of this sleep w/a box fan on at all times. no one, even my kids w/out the fans on, heard the alarm. I did call the police dept. to ask what they had done. They said they did a walk around of the house to look for any signs of forced entry, and since there were not, they left and called, since no answer they just left a messege. So after this instance, we cancelled ADT. What if someone had gotten into the house and were holding us hostage or murdering us, I always think the worst. So in that instance what good really was ADT when the police didn't come into the house to check if we were ok. I asked this to ADT and their answer was the their service was more for theft when you are not home. I am more worried about my family, than my belonings. So if anyone else who may read this knows of a better system please let me know.

I use Advanced Alarm (one of Dave Ramsey's recommendations). It was $450 to install. I have alarms on four doors (but no windows), battery backup and remote key fob. It is $9.95 per month (I chose to have mine billed quarterly) and you do NOT have to sign a contract. I have accidentally set it off a couple of times and I would estimate the time between when the alarm went off (and like a PP said, it is LOUD, LOUD, LOUD), and the alarm company called me was about 15 seconds.

We use Safetouch (not sure how widespread they are). May have paid $99 for installation and did not need any additional windows/doors. 3 year contract is $25 per month if you pay it all up front (over $900) or you can finance it for payments of $36 per month - after the three years they'll allow you to pay the $25 per month direct to them without the multi-year contract up front payment.

So far so good - they have the two way communicator and come on the intercom if the alarm goes off before calling the police (unless you don't answer or else give the wrong password or enter the secret code on the keypad that shuts off the noise maker but still notifies the company that you are in trouble so they listen in on mute and call the police). Service has been good - one time when we switched phone companies they came out to reconnect the system and the guy didn't even charge for the service call (said he was suppose to do so).

But many now recommend wireless systems since any thief that really wants to get in will just cut your phone line anyway rendering your hardwired system useless - or at best just an expensive noisemaker.

Also, most home invasions take place during the day while everyone is at work, not at night while people are at home - just an FYI for the person above who doesn't turn theirs on during the day (monitored or not the noise is the big thing - thieves don't want attention).

What company is only $17 per month?

Do you have a website for them? There seems to be several with that similar name. Are they nationwide?

we have Brinks. Have used them for over ten years. We have had excellent service from them.

I love the door chime for my DD5.

I love that the fire dept is notified even if the alarm isn't activiated. We have a dog (my 1st born) at home and I was always worried that there would be a fire and we wouldn't be there the save her. Now i know they will come right away- even if we aren't home.

I have all my downstairs windows alarmed (16 total). All the downstairs doors alarmed (4). I have glass breakage in downstairs, plus in DD5's room. Her windows are alarmed also. We have smoke/heat sensors on all 3 floors. We have 3 key pads. We didn't get motion detector.

Installation was about $1000 for all that. but that included a "moving" discount when we moved to this house. At the old house we had the FAB, I loved it. But it wasn't available for this system.

I pay about $27 per month. But that is if they can bill your credit card yearly- the full amount.

I can't tell you how happy I am with them. They always respond in about 2 minutes when the alarm goes off (they wait to see if you are going to shut off the alarm)

The police and fire departments around here charge for false alarms. I believe it is up to $100/call.

I don't have an alarm system - I have something better - nosey neighbors. LOL

My advice is if you are going to get an alarm system, every door and every window (upstairs too) should be armed. Not just with a motion detector. Many companies choose not to arm all the windows (thus making it seem cheaper). That just makes no sense to me. If you are going to do it, do it right.

We use ADT and have been very happy with the service.

Make sure you check with your police department. Ours required us to get a permit for the alarm. (Only $5). We pay $40 a month for monitoring which includes all the warranties, etc. in case anything needs to be fixed. Otherwise it was $26 a month I believe.

If you choose ADT or any other big company, make sure you go through them directly. Don't go through a subcontractor (avoid silly fees). Adt's website is www.adt.com . Nothing else.

We have Secure Technolgoies (local I think) and pay $29.95 a month. We have every door & window on the basement level & 1st floor (roughly 25) and the system was around $2000.

Battery back-up is a good idea, as is having 2 keypads - one on the level where you enter the house, and one in the bedroom. I'd forget every night to go back down & turn it on if I didn't have a keypad in my room! We also have smoke alarms tied in to our security system. We do not have the remotes.

We rarely use the laser motion sensor mode - I'm too nervous that a shadow or animal outside would trigger it, and we'd be out of the country with the police & fire dept. breaking in my house, with no way to contact us.

We've had 3 false alarms in 3 years (woke up & went down & fling open the windows on a cool spring morning - and oops!) and they called within 15 seconds each time, and we didn't get charged for the false alarms. The alarm is MADDENING like someone else said. You can hear it a few houses away. We had a power surge once that set ours off & we couldn't turn it off. We called the company & they said they could not see that it was in alarm mode - so frustrating. We had to leave the house for awhile.

We also have ADT and have been very happy with them. about $31/month. Don't remember the install details (It's been 7+ years) other than there were a ton of specials - enough for DH to stop talking about getting one and actually do it. We also get a small break on our homeowner's insurance because of it.

One change we made from house #1 to house #2 was to put a keypad in our bedroom. Made it much more convenient and gave me more piece of mind. We don't use the motion sensors often as we have a very open floor plan and the kids still get out of bed at night. Love the chime feature on the doors w/ the kids.

We actually had an alarm system and were paying $15.00 a month however we discontinued it. Husband is a police officer and said that criminals are now cutting the phone/cable lines outside the house, thereby rendering your system useless.

He installed a wirless security system (chimes us when front/back door open) that notifies us by two way that something is going off in the house (Husband says as he goes to many calls where alarms have gone off, they have been going off for a long time and theives are far away). So in the event something happened we can call police. He also put in a wireless surveillance system. That is really the best way to catch who ever has broken into your house. There have been several break ins where the homeowners had cameras and were able to recover their property and apprehend the criminals. It cost us about $1200.00 to do this, however we don't ever have to pay a monthly fee.

Now there is a down side, this does not protect us against fire but my husband figured that since someone is home pretty much all of the time, it lessened our odds (we also have fire extinguishers throughout the house).

Not knocking the alarm companies, just giving you an alternative.

You can always purchase the cellular backup. That way if the phone line is cut. It would route the call this way.

Usually, anything that causes attention to a burglar. The siren, the lights flashing. Generally has them running before they can do much or any damage.

Make sure you have all the doors and windows alarmed. Glass break sensors that hear the window being broken also. This is one thing you don't want to SAVE money on. Granted, the more it cost, not always the better it will work.

You can use a system like this also, when your at home. Its called the STAY mode. Hope this info helps. Justin
