 Possibly you had not read the whole thread, ima, or kanga. The thought transited from male teachers, to teachers of any gender, I further developed the thought that one can not be too safe anywhere in life, as I think most of us try to instill in our children today, awareness....an example close to most of us, this board, sort of like our neighborhood in RL. I guess I have always taught my two kids, now adults, to be aware, everywhere. Sorry for having a thought. As for tea, I prefer coffee.

BTW, have a nice holiday.

You've got it right Dan. It's not just teachers, male or female, but coaches, Scout Leaders, neighbors, ministers, priests and nuns. Oh yes and parents too. I work in forensic science and most of the child sexual assault cases are parents or parental figures- stepparents, mom's boyfriend, dad's girlfriend. The true 'stranger danger' case is rare (although the rarity is no excuse for not protecting your kids, so no flames there).

My kids have had some wonderful male teachers over the years. I had some wonderful male teachers when I was in school ages ago.

What scares me the most about this is the fact that I have met him, spent time with him and he slipped under my "Mom" radar. Everyone I talk to is just stunned by this. The kids I think will get over this faster then the parents will.

Hello,

I know just how the orginal poster feels. A year or so back we found out that the director of my daughters day care was arrested for child abuse and indangerment. It just put a huge pit in my stomach. My daughter had been in reg school for a few yrs already but it made me think of time I complained about thing other children would do or something along that nature. I racked my brains for days thinking did I miss some clue that could have stopped this yrs ago. I also talked with this women on a friendly basis daily. Well I had a talk with my daugter that has a mind like a steel trap (although she has some special needs). She asured me that nothing like that had never happened to her. I also took the situation to remind my daughter that I can't help her unless she is open and honest with me about the things that happen to her and that I am here to protect her. That if anyone that she trust should ever hurt her in any way that she should tell me so that I can fix or stop in right away. Now might be a good time to have the same talk with your girls before the school yr restarts and re-open the lines of communications that often get lost in the day to day hussle and bussle of it all. I feel for you and hope that you can also regain trust in your school system. I hope all works out well for you.

This is the worst feeling in the world. I know. I'm divorced because my ex-husband was molesting my niece. I still have guilt that it happened right under my nose. I was there to protect her but didn't know. I strongly believe in those inner feelings we all get. Especially as a parent. It's devastating when it fails.

And you are right. The kids will get past this much faster than the adults.

real men make good teachers...perverts shouldn't be teachers...

Well put! There are female perverts out there, too.

That is awful news. I kind of know how you feel. The guy who played the keyboard at my wedding, who worked in a secondary school (aged 11-18) with my husband was sent to prison for child porn offences. I have to disagree with the statement that men should not be teachers. My husband teaches children aged 11 - 18 and is an excellent teacher. I teach children aged 7 - 11 and work with 2 male teachers out of a staff of 11. Quite a few parents have asked if their child can have a male teacher as in the area that I work many of the chidren live with just their mums and do not have a male influelce in their lives. They like the fact that we have male teachers as it gives a positive male rolemodel to their child.

I don't think gender has anything to do with how good or bad a teacher is. This guy is just a pervert. Remember Mary Kay LeTourneau??? She was the teacher a few years back who got pregnant TWICE by one of her students...the second time AFTER a court order to stay away form the kid!!!!

As for your kids now not trusting ANY teacher...don't let them melodramatize. Tell them that every profession has good and bad.

There are some sick people on this board, both genders, whom I could not imagine trusting a child with. Just think of some.

Like who Dan?

Yeah come on Dan - thats not a nice statement

I hope the Mods look into this !!!!

 Are we now supposed to "list" those that could be on your list, DAN?

To the OP.....I know how you feel. Our Parish Priest resigned a couple years ago due to an "incident" in his past involving a juvenile....made all of us whose children attended the Catholic Grammar school he had access to ,very upset-even tho our kids are grown.

meantheguys2 said..,.
Statistically speaking, the majority of sexual offenders are female

Those statistics were probably on page 5 of the Enquirer then because that couldn't be further from the truth.

Cheers,
Grumbo

I spent 20 years in the field of teaching and child counseling...and you?

Much longer in a field that deals directly with the topic at hand. Needless to say you are categorically wrong.

Cheers,
Grumbo

I have been out of the field for 3 years now, possibly the stats have changed. Can you point me to where I could check up on them? And what field would that be? Just curious since you are claiming to be closer to the issue than teaching and child counseling.

That surprised me too, that more women are involved. It seems to almost always be men. Is it just not reported to the media as much?

Arghhhhh! A huge apology to those on the board! I am so embarassed! I mis-stated that females are more like to be sexual predators. I meant males! I thank Grumbo for pointing out nicely and not calling me an idiot as I became defensive! I will now go edit my original statement. It will surely make more sense in general now!

That was my first reaction, that it was a typo. But I started to wonder when you defended it so strongly ;) .
