I left Vera Wang thinking to myself, why WOULDN'T I spend $8,000 on a gown?

Because it's one day.

And then I thought to myself, why WOULD I spend $8,000 on a gown?

Because it's one day.

:)

PS. I'm NOT spending $8000 on my gown!!! David's Bridal here i come ;)

If I had the money to buy a Vera Wang dress and not be in debt I would do it. She has some beautiful dresses except my pocketbook wouldn't like me too much. :rotfl: :rotfl:

I too am going with David's Bridal- it just seems more smart and I am a bargin shopper. My rule of thumb for buying clothes is if it isn't on sale or clearance then I don't buy it. I freak out when I have to pay full price for something. :lmao: I used to work in retail and seeing what the companies pay for the items and then what they mark it up for the customers- it just nearly kills me.

WOW! I was hoping my WHOLE wedding would cost that much!! :rotfl2:

I agree! I think spending $8000 on a wedding dress is insane! I don't think I would do it even if I could afford it. I have friends that have paid under $1000 for their dresses and others who have paid much, much more than that and the dresses are all equally as beautiful. Matter of fact, a few of the cheaper dresses were more beautiful than the expensive ones! My wedding dress has so much detail on it that when I show it to people they think it's going to cost me thousands but it is under $1000! It just goes to show that the cost is just a number!

Yup, my philosophy as well...which is why I have such a hard time buying new work clothes...

That being said, my dream gown happened to NOT be from David's Bridal, but I had an opportunity to order it online for $300 savings...my mother made the decision to order it from the salon I had tried it on at and pay the extra b/c then we knew that I would get it. Thank goodness, b/c I was going to order from discount bridal service and we all know how that turned out (they went under)...I would have been without a dress!

Anyway, I digress...I've never seen anyone else with my gown and that is cool...

If I had money, I might consider spending $8k on a gown if it was "the one"...however Vera Wang gowns were not really my style and the $3k + gowns I did try on just didn't do it for me...

p.s. DH's cousin had a VW gown...

WOW that is a lot! mine is 750 and i thought it was expensive! i don't think I could justify that even if i could "afford it" I think of all the people in the world who don't even have food to feed their families, and I would feel so guilty buying something that expensive for a few hours! But, if thats what floats your boat... :rolleyes1

Wow! I'm jealous. Mine was from David's Bridal and on sale for $199. :) I still think I'm going to look pretty hot in it though.

Just wanted to throw an alternative to DB out there: Alfred Angelo - www.alfredangelo.com. I ended up getting my gown from them for the same price as a similar gown at Davids, but the material on the Alfred Angelo gown just felt richer.

If the dress makes her happy and she can afford it then I don't think there is anything wrong with it.

It's a pet peeve of mine that people are so quick to judge others for what they choose to spend their money on. Why is it more or less "insane" to buy a beautiful wedding dress than to spend money on any other luxury item?? I don't want an expensive car, a big house, a huge TV, or tickets to the hockey playoffs. But for some people these are the things that make them happy - and what better use is there for money?!

My dress is a couture gown as well, and retails for over 5k. I was able to get a sample gown for less than 1/2 that retail price, but if I hadn't been able to find the deal I still would have gotten the dress. There is a noticable differance in quality with couture gowns. They are better constructed, made of finer fabrics, and have attention to detail that you will never find on a less expensive dress. For some people, because they are only wearing the gown once this isn't a big deal to them, to others it is important. To me, it's worth it. Just like the Disney my wedding is worth it. No, it's not for everyone, but it's perfect for me.

If I had the money for a Vera Wang dress, I would have worn one (or another high end designer). I love the high end gowns and the fabrics they are made of. Most of the David's Bridal dresses are knock offs of designer dresses. They are all lovely, and are perfect for a one day event, but if you try on a David's dress, and then try on the dress that it's based on, its a world of difference in fabric, construction, etc. For some people that matters, for others, it doesn't.

Oh my....I would love to wear an 8,000 dollar dress!....but I can't and I won't be! Vera Wang dresses aren't my style, but they are soo beautiful! Well, congrats to her, how exciting!

Very well said. I totally agree. I don’t want a luxury car (which some people just love), but chose to spend money on Disney vacations and a Disney wedding, including my wedding gown. To each his/her own.

i've bookmarked a couple of his/their gowns!!!

i'm hoping to see them in real life at the bridal salon soon :)

i like the ones with the bodice. sexy! i know brides aren't supposed to be sexy but :)

I would love a Vera Wang gown, but couldn't justify paying those prices. I spend most of my money on travel - so I would be thinking how many great trips the gown had cost me!

I have been looking at Vera Wang gowns on ebay and there are some bargains. I'm thinking that if I got one, I could sell it straight after, and I wouldn't lose much money. My only worry is, what if they are fakes? Does anyone have any tips for spotting a fake Vera Wang on ebay? Thanks.

sounds like my situation. When i first saw my "dream dress" I thought I would never be able to get it b/c it looks like it should cost thousands of dollars, and my mom tried to prep me b4 we asked about the price so i wouldn't get my hopes up (pathetic I know!) but it ended up being under 800 and i was in shock b/c it is so beautiful! its from www.maggiesottero.com the capri lynette dress! i also agree that alfred angelo has a lot of pretty dresses!

I agree with so many other posters. While the money I spent on my gown isn't really an issue, I still don't think I can justify spending that much on a gown, that I will wear only one day! And, I am not even wearing my dress to the dinner or the dessert party. I am wearing the bodice, and had a pair of pants and long jacket made to go with it. I was scared to death that I would drop food on my dress, then I would feel terrible. :guilty:

On the side, my dress was almost $3000 regular price, but it was a sample, so I only paid $150 for it, and that included the veil to match!! I was so proud of myself.... and Dfi was equally as proud....  :goodvibes

Why can't we be sexy? I think people often equate sexy to slutty ... you can be sexy and classy at the same time - IMHO! :-)

I'm getting http://www.alfredangelo.com/index.cfm/fuseAction/COLLECTIONS.productDetail/fromAdvancedSearch/0/productID/4c5bde25-163e-4c41-ab90-a1fc843a2373/categoryID/8b186130-0d63-4e3c-ac5c-aea0d9566e1c in ivory and indigo and my bestfriend/matron of honor will be in http://www.alfredangelo.com/index.cfm/fuseAction/COLLECTIONS.productDetail/fromAdvancedSearch/0/productID/65738023-c82c-4c2f-876f-829d27e81ef6/categoryID/772F03C9-DE43-4942-BFA0-DA77E21EBD65 in the indigo of course :-) I ordered it in March (the 4th to be exact) and they said 4 to 6 months because it's being essentially custom made. I just felt like a princess in it and the material was so much nicer. You can also get my gown without the embroidery. It is VERY similar to a gown at David's Bridal (http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=1204&prodgroup=134) but 1) the David’s dress only came in 1 blue (Alfred Angelo had 8 I think) and 2) it didn't have the embroider option which I really like. I tried both on.

I would be proud of you too! That's some AWESOME shopping skills if I do say so myself!

I think that this is a personal decision. In 1992, my aunt's gown cost $15,000 (which is equivalent to $21,000 in 2006 dollars) and I was FLOORED when I found out!!! Having said that, her parents (my grandparents) are the ones who paid for her gown and since she was their youngest, they wanted to go all out, I think. She tragically died five years later when she was just 31 and we all still miss her so much, so I'm sure that my grandparents do not regret the cost of the gown 1 bit. I think they're glad that they gave her the biggest wedding that they possibly could have. You just never know about these things and sometimes it is best just to live in the moment (if you can afford to!).

Having said that, my gown cost about $1,500 (after taxes and alterations) and it was PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think you HAVE to spend an ungodly amount of money to get a gorgeous dress.
