My first attempts at Selective Coloring... and now others' pics too!

I was using the recolor procedure.

I tried using the freehand steps and it did seem a litle easier except for one thing. If you let go of the mouse, you had to start all over and I wasn't good at that. I was getting parts that I didn't want. Is there a trick to that?

LOL I had the same problem the first time I tried the free hand method. I just make sure I have a lot of room for my mouse to roam around. I did read that there is a way of clicking on something so you can stop and start again without losing what you have already outlined. Darned if I can find that article though. Sorry.

If you or anyone else knows how, please let me know.

Were you able to get the picture perfectly surrounded that you wanted to keep? It seems really hard to go around a person with their hair and all.

I think we're on two differing programs, but how to get up close to color should be the same. You zoom in really really big and then make your brush size smaller to get around the person or flower or whatever it is. Good luck! :thumbsup2

I'm using Paint Shop Pro and using the freehand selection tool. It's not a brush. Kinda like an arrow and you have to make a box or outline around the person/item you want to keep in color. It's just hard because if you let go of the mouse, you need to start all over.

after choosing the freehand tool, go to tool bar above and pick smart edge....it's easier to use..

another option is to click edit copy the picture, then edit paste as new layer, then click adjust.hue and saturation, colorize, turn the top layer black and white,,by lowering hue and saturation sliders to 0
then choose the background eraser tool, and carefully erase the parts you want to be in color..

Wow, thank you, thank you, thank you...that was so much easier.

Actually, I just used the regular eraser tool and it worked PERFECTLY. The grass looked bright green and my DD's clothing looked bright yellow. Such a big difference.

Nice job everyone.
I did something a little different this time, here's an old picture of my grandmother, she taught school in a one room school house in IL. That's her and her class. Not sure of the town name but know it was Kane County, this picture was taken in 1903.

Ok, how were you able to take a black & white and put colors in it?

Thank you so much for posting this. I have been trying to understand how to do this for a long time and this tutorial was very easy to follow. You pictures look great. I love the barbershop quartet.

Here is my first attempt.

Great job! I love how this thread has taken off, and I'm glad that tutorial could help you. The last few pages people have posted questions and I was of NO help, as I don't think I was using the same method. I thought the way the above mentioned one was explained was fantastic, so I'm glad you could use it as well!
