Well, can you tell us where you will be staying? And how long you'll be there?

And welcome to the DISBoards. :)

Welcome to the DISboards, Johnboywallnut. It looks like we might be DVC "neighbors." What I've copied and pasted below is information I've gotten from various sources and saved . . . just in case I ever want to visit somewhere other than WDW. I hope you find some of it useful.

TRANSPORTATION TO UM... OTHER LOCATIONS...

Hi everyone. We will be staying at Port Orleans French Quarter soon and I am wondering how difficult it would be to get a cab to another location outside of WDW and back. We only plan to go this "other location" for 1 day. Does anyone have any experience with transportation to "studios" other than Disney's?

Last year we took a cab from PO-R to the Hard Rock Hotel to spend a couple of days at Universal/IOA. We had called for the cab, and it arrived on time. We had no trouble at all getting from WDW to Universal, and it was definitely a lot easier then catching Mears from the airport to WDW! Hope this helps, have a great trip!

The front desk at POR will call a cab for you. However, it will not be cheap. The fare to Universal Studios is around $40. You can save a few bucks by taking a Disney bus to Downtown Disney and catching a taxi from there. Another alternative is to go to DD and take an Orlando city bus (called the Lynx) to Seaworld, and transfer there to a bus going to Universal.

National (I think it's national - it's the green one) has a rental lot on/near WDW property and I'm pretty sure they can pick you up for free or drop you off too (we used them and it was very convenient) - it might be cheaper than cabbing it.

if you are talking about Sea World, no problem. Lynx provides a direct bus (see above) to it LINK 50, but Universal is a bit more difficult. It looks like you would have to change buses. I would call them and make sure.

Check with Mears Motor Shuttles. They provide transportation from the airport to the hotels on site and last time, I had the driver say that for $10/person round trip we could go to Universal or Sea World. Check it out!

I believe the fare is now $12 for a round trip ticket. Mears charges per person, while cabs charge for the trip so depending on how many in your party, depends on which is the more economical way for you to go. Also, Mears is a shuttle service which means there is a possibilility you may have other stops to make but overall, it shouldn't take you more than 30 - 45 minutes to get there.

After you get the rates, including the transportation from the airport (roundtrip), try pricing out a rental car. It usually works out cheaper or the same, and it is much more convienient than worrying about buses and cabs.

On-Site But Want to See the Rest?

So you are staying at a Disney resort, but you want to visit one of the other area attractions, such as Sea World, Universal Studios, or Church Street. You have checked all the guidebooks but still are not sure how to get to where you want to go. There are several options to consider. Before looking into the specific transportation options, answer the following questions: 1. How many people will need transportation? 2. How many days will I spend off Disney property? 3. Will I be staying until closing time at the respective attraction? If you have further questions, contact Guest Relations at your resort or Universal's Guest Relations (numbers listed below).

Shuttle Services:

Most area shuttle services offer pre-arranged transportation to and from Disney resorts. You must call at least 24 hours in advance to arrange pick up times. Shuttle services often run behind their schedules and will charge a per person rate. As of 2002, the going rates for a round trip to Universal Studios from Disney property range from $12 to $50, per person, depending upon the service. These shuttles will arrange for more than one pick up and drop off, so be prepared to wait/ride for more than an hour.

Mears Prices from Disney Resorts:

Universal Studios -- 12 per person, round trip
Seaworld -- $12
Kennedy Space Center -- $20
Cypress Gardens -- $20

Town Car Services:

For up to five people, and reliable service, a town car may be your best bet. Rates vary by town car company, but the personalized service, lack of hassle and reliability cannot be beat. Rates for up to five people vary from $50 to $80, round trip. Make arrangements early, as reservations fill up quickly. Most town car services take credit cards or cash. Payment is expected after completion of the first leg of the trip. Check with each company regarding their policy on personal checks.

Cab:

Taxis can hold up to six passengers, if prearranged, however there is an extra charge for each passenger. The trip can cost $50 or more, each way. Comparable taxi rates, as of 2002 are as follows: $3.25 for the first mile, $1.75 for each additional mile. You will also be charged a fee for each 50 seconds of idle time on the road as well as fees per passenger.

Rental Cars:

If you are planning to spend more than one day away from Disney property, renting a car may be your best option. Rental rates, depending upon season, type and size of car, and availability run from $20 to $60 per day. If you only need a car for one or two days, your best bet would be National, which is the official car rental agency of Disney. National is located on Disney property and will transport you between their location (Disney's Car Care Center) and your hotel. A rental car gives you the ability to control when and where you go on any of your excursions outside of Disney. If you want to visit an outlet store or a local restaurant before you return the car, you have that freedom, as opposed to the regimented schedules of other services. If you are traveling with small children, child safety seats are available for an additional charge.

Hi welcome

bcv - turn right out your exit - then at the second light - (across from MGM) turn left - follow the sign to I4 (towards Orlando not tampa). I forget which exit but US/IOA is well marked - you won't miss it.
