I hope it's not too hard making that adjustment!

Is that because your child is turning 18?

Good Luck! I would just like to receive the child support like i am supposed to.
Hope it's not to hard on you, I know we get adjusted to things and then forget what it was like to be without until it happens again!!! :confused3

I have another 4 years to go at least, but I don't think it will be a huge adjustment...knock wood.

I get $400/mo. My ex's wife refers to it (to my son) as "Your mother's 3rd paycheck" (mine, DBF's, and the child support check). As in, "We could afford to go on vacation and buy new clothes and cars if we were getting a third paycheck too!"

I'm not sure who makes only $400 a month, but I'd sure like to know how they survive!

Wow, well, my child support when it ends in 11 years, wont make much of a dent in my budget...

Though I do feel for those of you who dont get the support you deserve....

I get $388/month, but I'm supposed to be receiving $704/month (exh doesn't want to pay that much unless he gets a lot more custody, which I refuse to give him for many reasons  ). So I don't think mine will be a huge adjustment when it ends. ;)

However, I still have at least 14 years to go before that happens. I wish I didn't need any money from him, but the kiddo's gotta go to school and that isn't cheap.

Good luck!

Isn't that the truth. When my STBX was paying, I received $1,100 a month. Now I get zilch!! Talk about a HUGE adjustment!

What does STBX stand for?

411.97 for 2 kids here...........cant imagine that being a "3rd paycheck"...heck it might cover groceries if I'm lucky

My poor neice never receives her child support. She supports her son all on her own. We help as much as we can.

This may sound ugly, but isn't child support supposed to pay the non custodial parents' share of the care and support of the child ? So now if you're no longer getting it I would assume that you no longer (are legally responsible for) supporting the child? If (s) he's at college, or whatever, then your household bills should reduce, along with the income reduction.

Of course, if this were alimony ending, it would be a different story.

In a perfect world, that's how it would be. Unfortunately, I don't think that child support EVER fully covers the non-custodial parent's share. Also, just because the child becomes of legal age, doesn't mean that they then become responsible adults and pay their fair share.

To clarify, assume that a "child" turns 18 and graduates high school. Assume they get a minimum wage job and continue to live at home. A minimum wage job most likely wouldn't cover their share of expenses to live there.

Tinatark, let me take a wild and crazy guess. Your husband pays child support?

My father cut it off illegally when I was 13, after a couple of years of lawsuits he went to jail for it, then he sued to contest my paternity (that case lasted in court exactly 15 minutes, 7 of which were the judge yelling at him), then he went to jail when I was 17 for unrelated charges. The dude had a breakdown, prior to that he was a very successful physician.

My late teen years were financially brutal. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Not necessarily. My dd's birthday is in November. She will turn 18 at the beginning of her senior year--I'm hardly likely to kick her out.

DH and I will stop paying child support in two years...at which time we will be setting up a bank account in daughter's name for her to spend when she goes off to college (5 months after she turns 18).

The legal child support may end, but our support of her does not. She is still our daughter (my step) and we will still give her as much as we can until she is financially able to do it on her own.

SeaShelley, I only wish all non-custodial parents (and steps) were as reasonable as you! It sounds like your DD is a lucky girl.

I'm not really sure what the point of child support is to be honest with you. The month of May, I have the DD's 17 days, their father has them 14. He pays me 411 and change a month in child support, with this agreed upon custody agreement.

Of course- if you take my expenses for the month, and my income, and then compare that to his expenses and his income you would see the my expenses are higher than his, and his income is higher than mine. The only expense I have that I chose to was my Envoy, his truck is paid off.
