A good friend of my parents' (from back in high school) murdered his wife and then killed himself. They had two teenage children, who wanted both of their parents waked and buried together. I remember it being a huge controversy, because the wife's family felt very strongly that their daughter should not be waked and buried beside the man who took her life, but eventually they decided to honor the wishes of the couple's children, and it was a joint ceremony.
I agree with those who said that the wake is more to show support for the family, who are probably very much in need of comfort right now
