Anyway, VA32h I always love reading your posts because they contain insights that I hadn't thought of before! While I was one of the many, I'm sure, who got a couple vibe off of Sirius and Remus I never really looked at it quite as deeply. I like what you said about Remus' werewolfism being a metaphor for homosexuality. That would make a lot of sense. Obviously, I can see why JKR would not go that route but it would have made for another interesting plot twist. She already has so many underlying metaphors in the books and social issues that occur that can be easily compared to things that go on in our world. I've always felt that it's amazing how similar Voldemort is to Hitler. Persecuting muggle borns even though he is half-muggle, his insatiable need for power, the desire to have a pure race, and the fact that he lets some of his followers believe they are close to him when in reality he trusts no one and has no true, close friends. It's interesting the parallels you can make in the books to real life events.
Well thank you! I have also heard theories that werewolfism was a metaphor for depression, or for Aids, both of which would also work.
JKR has said that Dementors are her manifestation of depression, though.
Anyway, the HP books are so rich and layered, that even after the series is finished, I think we could go on discussing them forever.
I definitely agree that Voldemort is a Hitler figure, and it's no coincidence that Dumbledore defeated the "dark wizard Grindelwald" in 1945, either. In fact I briefly wondered if Grindelwald WAS supposed to be Hitler. Wouldn't that be intriguing - a Wizard masquerading as a Muggle to achieve world domination?
When I saw the Death Eaters in the GoF movie, I thought the costumes also suggested KKK - which was interesting in a British movie with a British writer, director, and crew!
But if we have to talk about Horcruxes - I've already said that I think they are what Dumbledore said they were.
The Locket - either Kreacher has it hidden somewhere at 12 Grimmauld Place or Mundungus Fletcher (**who should be played by Bob Hoskins in the movie, IMO) stole it, and Harry needs to get it back from him.
The Hufflepuff Cup - Hepzibah Smith is a descendant of Helga Hufflepuff - Zacharias Smith is in Hufflepuff House. Are the Smiths related? That would be so convenient.
The Snake - Nagini is always with Voldemort, so she would likely be killed shortly before or at the same time as killing Voldemort. Perhaps Ron or Hermione wrestles with the snake while Harry takes care of Voldemort? No idea!
The Mystery Object of Ravenclaw's or Gryffindor's: My guess would be something of Ravenclaw's, because we've seen Gryffindor relics before (the sword, the Sorting Hat). Conventional wisdom says that the mystery horcrux will be an object we've seen before, but not one that was already central to a previous story. The Sword of Gryffindor and the Sorting Hat have already been featured. But then again, all of Voldemort's object-horcruxes are supposed to be items that are inherently valuable
and are very well hidden. So why would we, the reader, have happened upon them already?
I'm trying to think of what could be valuable to Voldemort, and what places were important to Voldemort, that would be significant hiding places. Godric's Hollow - maybe. If he hid a horcrux there before he went after Harry, thinking GH would be the site of his triumph over the prophecy and not his downfall.
I think we don't have, and aren't supposed to have, enough clues to solve the horcrux mystery on our own.
