Movie Reviews: Wall-E -- Pt. 1
26 June 2008 10:38 AM, PDT

While many reviews for the Disney/Pixar feature Wall-E are displaying off-the-chart enthusiasm, with many writers calling it a masterpiece and predicting a best-picture Oscar nomination, some analysts are suggesting that the film may be unable to convert the critical claim into box-office coin. On Wednesday Reuters noted that the film "blasts off into uncharted territory" by "mixing an unusual love story with somber messages about the future of Earth and humankind." The wire service noted that Pali Capital analyst Rich Greenfield had warned clients last wee about the movie's "box office potential given Pixar's risky bet on an offbeat main character, who rarely speaks during the film" The film began picking up additional critical endorsements from mainstream critics today (Thursday) (since the film is set to open in many major cities at midnight tonight). Lou Lumenick in the New York Post, while among those calling the film a masterpiece, warns that it is "arguably the darkest animated feature ever released by Disney (after Pinocchio)." Nevertheless, he concludes, "Kids will love Wall-e, the robot's epic adventure and his heart-tugging love story. Some adults may be less comfortable, which is fine with me; most great works of art are inherently subversive." Claudia Puig in USA Today gives the film four stars -- her highest rating -- calling it "an extraordinarily captivating adventure, laden with equal parts humor and heart and populated with memorable and endearing characters." Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News also says that while the film is certainly "adult friendly," kids should like it "just fine." With its combination of science fiction and romance, he says, "you have something dangerously close to the sublime, a film that will be dissected and enjoyed for years to come." And Christy Lemire of the Associated Press predicts that moviegoers are likely "to walk out of the theater with the rare joy of knowing that you've just witnessed something that touched your heart."

Movie Reviews (2): Wall-E

And the critical praise for Wall-E keeps on coming. On Wednesday and Thursday we presented the initial wave of reviews for the Disney/Pixar film. The wave swelled today (Friday) with comments like these: Rafer Guzmán in Newsday: "Wall-e" is pure visual magic." Joe Morgenstern in the Wall Street Journal: "I must drop my inhibitions about dropping the M word -- especially since I've already used magnificent -- and call Wall -E the masterpiece that it is." A.O. Scott in the New York Times: "We've grown accustomed to expecting surprises from Pixar, but Wall -E surely breaks new ground." Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times: "This story told in a different style and with a realistic look could have been a great science-fiction film. For that matter, maybe it is." Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune: "It's remarkable to see any film, in any genre, blend honest sentiment with genuine wit and a visual landscape unlike any other." Ty Burr in the Boston Globe: "The best American film of the year to date."

Just returned from seeing Wall-E...Loved it!!!! The combination of a love story with a message about an overindulgant population, along with limited dialogue was quite unique! This isn't your typical silly, animated movie i.e. Madagascar. DD10 also loved the movie, as well as DW, and I. This is definitely a movie worth seeing!

Saw it opening night, and I mean night. It was the very first showing at 12:01AM at the Downtown Disney Theatres at Disneyland Resort! We were lucky to be able to take a quick trip to DL last week, cause I am having Spine surgery:sad: on Wednesday and won't be going to the Parks for a long time while I recover...:sad1:

We LOVED it!, so much that we went again on Saturday for an early matinee. I am going to go tomorrow again! I LOVE this movie!

I LOVE Wall*E!!!!! What an adorable character! This is the best Disney/Pixar film by far! So touching. I cried of course, then laughed, then cried again and laughed some more! It is wonderful! I would see it everyday if I could! I am just itching for the DVD now. I want to watch it everyday in my own home.

And of course while we were at the Park, we just HAD to pick up everything Wall*E they had for sale! I also got a t-shirt, a pin set, a notebook and a framed poster from The Disney Store! They have lots of Wall*E stuff at Toys R Us online as well and lots more stuff is coming I bet! eBay has a LOT of Wall*E merch as well! I am collecting Wall*E now! He is the cutest little character to come along in along time!

We saw it Saturday and loved it. Very original in style. I personally loved the minimal dialogue, etc. The visuals are amazing. The space scenes look like they came straight out of the Hubble telescope. Plenty for adults and kids alike to enjoy.

But given the high critical acclaim and the fact that is seems to be getting some of highest ratings of the year, is it possible for it to win a Best Picture OSCAR? Hmmm...

My wife and I loved Wall*E. It met our expectations. It was a nice use of messages by Disney/Pixar as well.

1. Our environment is getting overrun with pollution and disrespect.

2. "The Earthling" on the space ship floating around in hover-recliners and outrageously over-weigh indicating how obese we as a society are becoming.

The move was awesome, did I mention that. M-O (along with Wall*E) made the movie a success!

Thanks Disney/Pixar

We loved the movie and have recommended it to several friends and family. Will definitely be buying this movie once it is out.:thumbsup2

I loved WALL*E!!!! The humans floating around in the hover crafts reminded me of someone I knew from Africa who once commented to me how lazy some Americans are. This individual was from Sierra Leone and alot of her family was killed in war and came here because their crops were destroyed and wanted to make a better life for her family... anyway she was amazed by how much land we dont use for anything where we could be for crops and she couldnt get over how many people just dont want to work, she said "If Americans had a machine that could pick them up out of bed and carry them around and put them on the toilet and wipe them and feed them, everyone would buy one." I just had to laugh at the move when it reminded me of what she said.

My DS 3 and I both enjoyed it. I also liked the "subtle" pokes at our culture.

We took DD and DS to see it and they loved it (so did we). BTW, I loved the cartoon short before! :goodvibes

We saw it on Saturday and loved every minute of it.
The cartoon short before was hilarious, the movie was beyond wonderful.
I loved the closing credits - it was a 'history of art lesson' that continued the story from the movie (won't spoil anything by saying more about the movie).

pixar always manages to amaze me. there are shots in this film that seriously made me question if they were computer generated. they put imperfections into the shots to make them look more real!

I had mixed reactions about walle. It was a great story and had an interesting plot. However, it was a far stretch from the Pixar movies from the past. Walle was much more serious and had an almost apocalyptic feeling to it at some points. Previous Pixar films were more light hearted. I guess I had grown accustomed to more simple plots like in cars, and toy story. The live-action bits also could had done without. Aside from my petty criticisms, Walle is among the elite of movies this year to date.
