Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Haven't posted here in a while, but I've got a question about white bread (for the kiddos). I'm stuck with only the Stop N Shop organics in the bread department. I have to tell you, it is not the best. I've checked EVERYTHING!! Does anyone know what other brands I could try (besides baking my own - for some reason my breadmaker no longer bakes, just makes the dough).

Oh, and my BF's assistant yesterday was raving about her "healthy" new fav drink - V8 Splash. HFCS is the second ingredient, right after water!!! :scared1: Where's the veggies?? She got an earful.

I have to say though, all in all we are not missing too much. DS loves checking all the ingredients before he eats something or at the grocery store.

In a nutrition class I was in a couple of years ago, my professor said that it was after companies started replacing sugar with high fructose corn syrup that the obesity rates began to skyrocket. This began in the late 1970s-early 80s. When I thought about it, I realized that she was right. It's involved but has to do with the way sucrose is digested in the body compared to the way fructose is digested.

From my readings, I think it's primarily because real sugar (sucrose) generates a satiation (fullness) response, while HFCS doesn't. That's why back in the old days, all you could drink was a 6 oz. soda. A 12 oz (or a 20 oz) soda with sugar sweetened soda would be way too filling. However that same 12 or 20 oz soda with HFCS does nothing in terms of satiation. You can keep eating.

I hear Dr. Laura "selling" V8 during her show, and she brags about how nutritious it is. If she only knew. . .

Your kids will only eat white bread? I wish I could be some help, but the ONLY bread I've been able to find at the store is Nature's Own. They are all wheat breads though. sorry.

Well, I guess that Dr. Laura doesn't know everything!! ;)

My son will actually eat wheat, thank goodness, but my daughter - that is another story. I'll see if I can find a lighter colored wheat bread and give it a try. I hope Nature's Own tasted better than Stop and Shop - I'm not a big fan of their wheat either. I can honestly say that the only thing I still miss now is the Arnolds Oat Nut bread. :sad1:

DH stopped by the grocery store for me on the way home from work. He said ALL the Kroger pasta sauces are HFCS free. He said it was the only brand that was HFCS free. :)

Hunts "No added sugar" Spaghetti Sauce (in the can) is also HFCS free.

Get the kids off of white bread...... Better to get them used to wheat now, than to have to change them when they are older.

I know alot of us on this thread make our own breads, and I've seen some mention that they don't have a bread machine. A big problem with buying a used bread machine from a garage sale or thrift store is that the manuals often don't come with them.

Today I found a really nice bread machine in like new condition. I bought it anyway even though it didn't have the manual. I googled the machine name and I found the manual in a pdf document for free!

I already have a bread machine so I googled it and I found the manual also in a free pdf!

The machine I bought today was only $10. My mom has been wanting one, and I bought it for her. I'm going to test it out though and decide which machine I like best. I'll give one of them to my mom.

I was in Whole Foods today and noticed that their 365 brand sodas are now sweetened with cane sugar - not high fructose corn syrup. I bought a 6-pack of their cola to try.

Just checked my fridge and pantry - the only item I found with HFCS is my Raisin Bran. My granola bars have "high maltose corn syrup" - never heard of that! :confused3

Most of my condiments come from Trader Joe's, and my jams, drink mixes, and bread products are mostly Swedish, so I luck out with regular sugar there! :thumbsup2

Some of roommate's food items are another story... :rolleyes1

Wishing everyone a Happy no HFCS Thanksgiving! I think we are going to pull it off. Bought some organic cranberry sauce and organic stuffing at Whole Foods. My DM picked up some organic pies at Sunflower Market (a little like Trader Joes).

Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving! If you stumbled upon some great "natural" recipes please do share!

Country Kitchen's Whole Grain White and Thomas' 100 Calories English Muffin have no HFCS in them. The English Muffins contain sucralose but it's the next to last ingredient.

You could also use your bread maker to make the dough and let it rise, then pop it into a nice loaf pan and bake it in your oven. I did that many times when mine turned into a dough, then burnt bread maker. I finally just got a nice mixer with a dough hook and tossed the bread burner. :)

Hi everyone, I am looking for a few good books on nutrion and diets. My dd has an intollerance to fructose so I try to keep an eye on that. I stay away from fruit snacks and such. But now that I am reading about HFCS I wonder what else I need to know about.

I went to Amazon but am overwhelmed with all the information there. What books do you recomend?

I thought the Food Additives website was very helpful and will save the link for future reference. I think my SIL will enjoy it too, as she loved organic chemistry and enjoys learning about chemicals in food. Thank you for posting it!!

I knew aspartame was not good for you, but I didn't think of it being in the category of things you should avoid completely. It's a good thing I stopped drinking my Aquafina flavored water. I guess I have to give up my sugarless gum.....

This is a very helpful link: http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm It lists ingredients and why they are either safe or to be avoided. It's nonprofit, too, so they're reporting the facts as opposed to the current hysteria or propaganda. Check out what it says about HFCS!!
Yes, it is a helpful link. Since HFCS isn't beneficial in any way to consume, I'll continue to avoid it. :)

Thanks for the link. I'm maintaining a list of packaged foods that are free of HFCS at www.stophfcs.com.

However, I'm sure there are indgredients in this list that should be avoided too. But eliminating HFCS is a good place to start and will hopefully send a message to big agra that we went safe and healthy food choices. This worked with trans fats. Now it's hard to find a product with trans fats....not that you'd want too. :rotfl2:

We decided to start eating healthier by eliminating HFCS. I can't say I've noticed much of a difference in myself or the kids, but DH says it's made a HUGE difference in his headaches. I would like to cut out more chemicals but we're doing babysteps for now.

We've been reduced HFCS for a month now. Can't get the boys (DH included) completely off the white bread. But I've reduced the intake to about twice a week for the bread.

Haven't noticed a change yet, but I'm not expecting there to be a sudden glow about us. :rotfl2: Just knowing we are eating healthier is a good start.

Just in case anyone doesn't feel like checking labels at Disney (assuming WDW has them like DL does), Uncrustables have HFCS and maybe normal corn syrup as well.

Serious bummer to find that out, after DS had had half of the Uncrustable... (we normally don't eat them, but we were simply starving and he didn't want any of my veggie chili, and he loves the kid-meal "fun straws", so...)

But the biggest bummer was the hour of him bouncing around and freaking out, thanks to the HFCS (corn syrup gets him too, as do corn syrup solids, which Dole Whips have)...he hates it, I hate it, people around us want to diagnose him with various behavioural disorders...it's just bad news for the poor kiddo.

DH had an interesting experience a few weeks ago. We were hungry, so we stopped to get some stupid snack on the road. DH and I were going to share a soda. DH had his half, and suddenly he was falling asleep. While driving. He was fine not 15 minutes before.

He's been told by two health care practitioners that while he tests fine, symptomatically he should avoid those high-sugar foods/drinks...but when he has normal sugar, he's fine. But the HFCS foods/drinks, he now realizes, he has that plummet in blood sugar that causes him to fall asleep. Hopefully this has cured him of the soda thing, since he really shouldn't drink it at all! Neither should I, but I don't have reactions like that to it, and don't suck it down in two gulps, either...

Oh, and the 100 calorie snacks that are on the market, those have either corn syrup or HFCS (I think the latter if my memory is correct), which is a snack DH had been having, and was having fall-asleep-at-desk issues at the time (attributed to too little sleep, but now we think otherwise).
