Moms to Be Part 3

so you were able to get the regular shot ok? My primary care physician refuses to give me the shot because it is not the mercury free one and they say that it isn't safe for pregnant women. My OB said that it's fine, that the level of mercury is so small they aren't concerned. They told me that I could call my local health department to ask about the mercury free shot. No one at that number could help so they directed me to Public health, which then sent me to NYS Dept of health and then to the CDC and then to a wrong number and then finally to the bureau of immunization in Albany. Man, my phone was on fire yesterday!!!! But I never got an answer. :lmao:

I'm hoping to go to our local fire dept to get the shot there but am worried that I will be turned away for being pregnant... don't know what to do.

I've gotten one every year I've been pregnant, and will be getting one on Tuesday and it's never been an issue so you shouldn't have any trouble. I will say that on the form I sign it says you must be out of your 1st trimester so maybe that had something to do with you GP's stance? I realize you are in the 2nd trimester now, but I don't know when you asked, or maybe since it was within a couple of weeks he wanted to allow for dating error?

Everyone here, as well as the CDC, recommend pregnant women get the vaccine so I think your OB is right on target with his thinking. If your GP still won't give you the shot, ask your OB if they're getting any or if not where you can go.

You should be able to get any flu shot when pregnant, I'm not sure where your primary physician is coming from. Maybe he (or she) ran into a problem once, or read an article that stuck in his head so he's being super cautions? But I hate to even guess that, b/c I've never heard anything but women who will be pregnant during the flu season should be sure to get their vaccination. Period. Plus, your OB says to get it. I would listen to them over your PCP on this one, seeing as it has to do with your pregnancy and they deal with it daily.

Hi all!! Today was our 20 week ultrasound! And on the way there a tanker spiller on the highway and shut every lane down! So when I called to tell them I would be late the told me I wasnt scheduled for an ultrasound :scared1:. Don't know why, it was my 20 week appointment, and the doctor told me to get my ultrasound at this one. It was already 4 pm, and the lady had left at 2:30! I was so upset, my husband had even taken off work to go with me. When I told them, they were so sweet, called me back and told me they had found another technician in the building to do it for me! My doctor even stayed late so I could get there and have my ultrasound first! I was so excited, and couldn't believe how great they were!!

I have had a feeling the whole time Im having a girl......... and I was right . I am beyond thrilled! Scared too, since I only know boys! But Im sure it will be fine. We have no idea about names, so I will welcome any suggestions!

I am definitely getting the flu shot, but am still nervous about the h1n1 vaccine. My pediatrician did not recommend it for my 9 month old, but my ob told me to get it. I think I will do some more research and see.

Hope everyone is doing well, and congrats to those at the top of the list!

Congrats on the little girl!! That was really nice that they found an ultrasound tech and waited around for you. Even though our ultrasounds can be done in the office, we have to schedule them separately, which I did not know with my 1st kid cause my dr said the same thing as you "Get the ultrasound at your next appt." I didn't realize that meant I had to make a separate one just for that.

If only I could help you with names....

Linzybrooke - Good luck tomorrow morning!

Appointment update!!

So I am making absolutely no progress at all!

My doctor wants me to go into the hospital on Tuesday to start misoprostol to soften the cervix and start dialation.

I'm excited that I am getting somewhere but not really excited after reading about the controversial aspects of the drug. I am also upset that I may have to go to the hospital and then end up getting sent home!

Anyone know anything about it?

My SIL used that drug to start her induction. She got it at 11pm, spent the night in the hospital, then got pitocin started in the morning. I know they gave her a 2nd dose, but not sure if that was it. She was already dilated 1-2cm before going in so I am sure that may have played a role, but it did seem to get things going. In your case, are you just getting the Cytotec and going home, or will they procede with an induction from there? I would think you'd have to stay, but what do I know.

If you're not thrilled about the Cytotec, ask about using Cervidil (dinoprostone) instead. It's not as effective, and more expensive, but since it's a bit milder you might feel better about it.

I am going at 6:30 in the morning on Tuesday and they said that after four hours they will give me another dose. They said to be prepared to either go home or stay because it often sends women into labor. They don't plan on starting the induction unless it starts labor. I am not dialated at all but maybe I will by then..who knows!

The reason that I am not real thrilled about it is because I was pretty uneducated about it and didn't know much and the first thing she says is "The FDA hasn't approved us to use it the way we use it." I was like YEEHAWW!! Then I Google it and the first thing I see is "The Abortion Pill"
I was just like :scared1::scared1:

Yeah, it's an offlabel use. It is used to induce abortions (whether because of miscarriage, fetal demise, or any other type) because it causes uterine contractions and is pretty effective at that. I believe it was initially an ulcer drug and that is the 'intended' use of the drug. But lots of drugs are used off label for various reasons so don't worry about it too much.

Really though, if you are concerned at all, just ask about the Cervidil. Cervidil, at least in early labor, basically just ripens the cervix, whereas the Cytotec also causes contractions. So if the plan is to 'just' get the cervix going and hope things start on their own, then I would ask about it. Also, that is the intended use of Cervidil, specifically to ripen the cervix for labor.

The benefits to Cytotec are that it is much cheaper, causes contractions with the cervix ripening, and will usually result in a faster labor. But you don't seem like you are in a rush, so that stuff likely isn't too important to you, but consider all that before you ask about the alternatives. Also, a lot of drs just really prefer one over the other (mine uses Cervidil almost exclusively) so the Cytotec could just be presonal preference.

Thanks so much for your information! I am learning more and more about it!

You are right, I am not in a huge hurry but I don't want to go there, get started and then get sent home! Once, I am there, I want to have the baby!

I will ask her about Cervidil and see what she says!

Not a problem! My SIL was very concerned about it as well, as with her 2nd child they used Cervidil so when she heard a new drug she decided to google it and was not at all reassured by what she found. She called my husband and had him go over it all with her for the peace of mind. Ultimately, she used it and was totally fine.

What would we do without Google?!:rotfl:

Congrats on your little girl!!! So glad DH's day off wasn't a "waste" in that he got to be there for the U/S!!

I'm so scared to be at the top of the list - EEK!! I remember being at the VERY bottom!! YIKES!

I've heard, though not sure if it is true, that cervidil and your DH's little guys (you know, the ones that got you pg in the first place - not sure I can type the word b/c of the Dis sensors) are similar (some ingredient in the cervidil is the same). . . maybe you want to try that between now and Tuesday to see if it helps??? If you are up to it. . .

I was given Cervidil to soften my cervix in 1997 when my first child was born. I was given Cytotec with my last baby and I definitely preferred it. Cervidil gave me a few intense contractions with each application, but did nothing to really help my cervix. With Cytotec I had regular contractions and slow but steady dilation the entire night in the hospital (I went from a 1 to a 4). My water even broke on its own for the first time in any of my labors. My OBGYN is very conservative and cautious and has only started using it in the last couple of years whereas other Dr.'s here have been using it for much longer. If he didn't think it was safe, he wouldn't use it. And I trust him after five deliveries.

ZPT - Welcome and congrats! I was terribly sick with each pregnancy also and it does just feel like some bad virus in the beginning.

That is exactly what I tell myself too, that I am just getting rid of clothing, not some sort of memory, but I think the hormones overpower the logic. ;) I am finally getting better about giving away their old toys, but my motivation there is my son's birthday party is Saturday and part of it is at our house (we're going on a tour of the fire station also) so I really need to clear out the clutter!

I'm glad someone else understands the "I just feel sick" feeling. I've been so sick and miserable that it's been hard to get too excited. I'm even on Zofran 4x/day because I lost about 25 pounds from vomiting/not eating/being dehydrated. Blech.

It is so hard to get rid of the kids stuff even though you know it's for the best. It's such an emotional thing despite how logical you try to be about it.

How was the birthday party? Did you get swamped with new gear?

The weirdest part was that I LOVED her. She was my 2nd labor nurse and was great ALL day long. It was just that next morning that she was mean to me. If I hadn't still been drugged to high heaven I might have bitten her head off.

Everyone keeps telling me if I hadn't opted to be induced then I wouldn't have ended up in a c-section.
Bunch of stupid-heads who don't know what they're talking about.
I was induced at 39 weeks because Lucas was in the 98th percentile for size and I wanted MY doctor.. and I kept ending up in L&D with gallbladder attacks. Induction was the way to go for me.
I needed a c-section because my Piglet's head was too big for my pelvic bone. It had nothing, absolutely nothing, to do with being induced! I really hate people who think they know more about what happened to ME that day than I do.

(I still lurk ladies, hi! I just, oddly, miss being pregnant!)

That's too bad that she turned out to be rude the next day. I totally understand wanting the doctor that you want.

I go to a practice with multiple docs and midwives. One doctor flat out told me that if he saw me come in with twins, especially with one being breech, that there was no question, I was having a c- section (I would have left AMA and gone elsewhere as there are at least 4 or 5 other hospitals within 25 minutes of that one) but still....how rude! After that meeting with him while I was pregnant I made it a point to ask the other docs and the one who did deliver my twins was much more relaxed about the whole thing. He actually said that if it had been my first delivery he'd have been much more concerned but since it was a second pregnancy, and it was the second twin who was breech and since they were small babies, he didn't see a problem. He actually said delivering breech babies is a lost art and that he was going to try to force newer, younger doc to come and observe and learn. ;)

Of course if it had been necessary for the babies' health I would have done it but just because it was twins was not a good enough reason for me. In a situation like yours though where there is no other choice, I can't believe people gave you crap about it. Obviously your doc did her best to do right by you and give you the best shot but it was just not meant to be- and for some people that's the case and such is life. Most important thing at the end of the day is that your beautiful baby is happy and healthy.

By the way, were you the one looking for penguin bedding?? I saw this and thought it was super cute:

I have a question. When I get in bed at night, if I move a lot , I get cramps in my low stomach, to one side or the other. It's kind of a momentary thing-fairly extreme, but short-lived. It always scares me, since it took so long to get pregnant and I'm afraid every little thing is something going wrong. Has anybody else had this? I'm 9 weeks tomorrow.

I don't remember anything specifically related to bedtime but I do find myself with a lot of cramps and backaches (tilted uterus, I feel a lot in my back instead). I will say that if your doctor's office has a nurse line, I find that to be VERY helpful when I have questions. They seem to have a bit more time to talk and answer questions and they've been very reassuring for things that are important but don't necessarily require a doctor's visit

oh lucky you!!! I'm due a few days before you (march 5th) and have to wait another 2 weeks to find out. I'm so anxious!!!! :rotfl: Congratulations on your little man!!

Has anyone gotten the flu shot yet? I know that I should be getting it but do I go to my primary care physician? I just had a checkup yesterday (and got to hear the heartbeat - yea) but didn't think of asking when I was there...

I actually got mine at the OB office when I was there last week for an appointment. I get one every year anyhow because DD and I both have asthma but if they were willing to save me a trip to have to go get one somewhere else, works for me!!

My oncologist always had me get it too, and I haven't ever had the flu since. But I haven't gotten it this year, and don't know if I will. It made sense to me while I was in college and even grad school - but right now the only place I go with a bunch of people is church. . . . and when the baby comes, I won't be going out for a few weeks. . . so I'm torn as to what to do. I definitely do not want the H1N1 for me or the baby because I am afraid with how quickly they produced it and it is still unknown on side effects and such. Maybe I'm just nutso, but it is what I think - what about you all?

I feel the same way about the H1N1 vaccine and I told the OB that last week and she actually agreed with me which made me feel reassured. I just have an inherent distrust of things like that that are so new. I delayed my oldest getting the varicella (chicken pox) vaccine for the same reason. She did eventually get it but we just waited a bit to see how it played out first

Congratulations on your little girl! I love my son but girl stuff is so much more fun to buy, especially as they get older. Even places like Gymboree, I always find a ton for my girls but a lot of times the boys selection is just "blah".

Having both, I completely agree with you on that and am quite happy to be able to reuse my cute girl stuff and buy more of it! My son's baby stuff was cute, but now at 3yo, it's sort of like "Which animal looks the least frightening?" ;)

His birthday party is actually tomorrow, and I am still in the cleaning process. My mom is almost here, which is a blessing and a curse as she'll help clean, but in her own way and I'll never find some stuff. I only invited 5 kids so hopefully we won't get too much new junk. He has 28 kids in his class and no way was a doing that for a 3yo cause it would be a zoo! So I picked his 5 good friends (from various classes, so it won't really be an issue of hurt feelings, at least I hope!) and invited them only. Hopefully it goes well.

WOW - it sure has been quiet here - no posts in 4 days :scared1: Hope everyone is doing well!!

My little one is still comfy on the inside - I cannot wait for her to get here!! At my appointment on Friday I was a loose 1cm dilated (almost, but not 2 yet), the baby's head was still at 0 station, and I was at 70% effacement. Baby seems more active (maybe it is just because she is bigger) - and I am having some pains/crampy feelings down there, but I'm pretty sure no actual contractions yet.

Adi - Any progress is great! I can't believe you've only got another week and change till your actual due date.

Can't wait to hear some newsfrom Linzybrooke and IHeartTink!

I'm home with a sick 5yo today. I feel terrible cause she's vomited 4 or 5 times (though right now she's yelling out about every commercial that comes on tv, so maybe she's getting over it), but also terrible cause I know it's a matter of time before she spreads it to her brother, then me. We're going to NJ this weekend (my mom's house), then to a baby shower in NY state (a good 2 hours from my mom, which is 4+ hours from us) so I don't want anyone sick for all that.

Time to drop my son's lunch off at school. He usually comes home at noon, but since my daughter is sick I figure the longer he's away from her the better so I'll get him at 3pm.

Oh, we also got 2 kittens last night, who are quite the cute little pair. My daughter named hers Bolt and the other one is TBD. My son has changed from Leaf to Sebastian to Penny to who knows what it is currently. I'm trying to get him to name it Rhino since we have a Bolt (both are boys) but he's not really loving that at the moment.

And I had to reschedule my ultrasound because of of my sick kid, so I go next Tuesday. Just hope it's all good cause we fly to New Orleans 3 days later!

Justthat - I am sorry your daughter is sick. That is NO FUN. DS got a stomach bug back last year and it was the first time he had more than a cold. It was horrible ... I got it 36 hours later, than my MIL and then my DH. ICK ... I haven't been sick like that in years.

Was this your big U/S that you had to reschedule? That would drive me batty. Mine is in 2.5 weeks at 17w5d and I can barely wait that long to find out what this baby is ... I am tempted to go to a place 2 hours from here that will try for gender as early as 15 weeks!!
