(odd question, but did you have a catheter with your epidural? (I don't mean a catheter for going to pee, I had one that was connected to my epidural where they reinjected drugs into the catheter line, I can't imagine why they'd have to redo it! Everywhere is so different!!) And I told you not to be stupid like me and speak up if you thought it was wearing off!

I'm so happy for you guys, she's gorgeous!!

Patsy, according to my husband, the reason for redoing it is that when they initially place the epi (most have the catheter, very few people get a shot only) it could have been slightly off center, or if you move around it could slide out just enough to no longer provide pain relief.

Hmm... I forgot your hubby does that for a living.
So whats with them telling Sarah they shouldn't wear off unless something is wrong?
When mine wore off (both times) they didn't even look at it- they just re injected into the catheter... the second time it started to wear off they were already prepping me for the c-section and I think they just gave me a shot of Demerol to tide me over until he gave me what he called "the surgical level drugs" (said with a wink)

My husband is sleeping on the couch at the moment, but my guess, based on what he said earlier, is that in your case you must have been running low on meds going into the catheter, so they shot some more in and that did the trick. In Sarah's case, maybe her little bag of meds as full so they knew that the placement must have shifted if it wasn't working anymore. But again, that is my own layperson guess, and if I were to wake up my husband (who no, has no insomnia issues like myself, and yes, would want to change the channel on the tv if I woke him up!) he might have a totally different response.

I do know that he has said he gives stronger meds for c-sections than the other kind of birth. And actually, for those of you laboring soon, his preference is to do a combo spinal/epidural. He said it provides faster pain relief and stronger pain relief, so those seeking as much pain relief as possible, as about the combo. We also have epidural pumps at our hospital so once he's got it in (with the spinal working almost instantly), you can give yourself a boost of meds when needed. He particularly loves that cause then he doesn't get called back in.

Ha! You have no idea how much he hates OB. There are 2 types of overnight call for anesthesiologists in his hospital, #1 is surgeries and traumas (like people brought into the ER who need an airway secured, cause apparently anesthesiologists do that, who knew?), #2 is OB only. Last year he had almost all #2 overnight calls, so 5 times a month, on average, he was in L&D. And he hated it and complained bitterly.

He claims every woman comes in and tells him no epi (he HAS to visit every woman who is admitted, no matter what, to ask if they want anesthesia). Then at 2am they are in pain and he's woken up to put in the epi. Now, I am sure he exaggerates that a bit, but he insists it is true. He also complains about the women who won't stay still and then threaten him that it better not hurt.

So as of this month he is the chief resident, so he get to make the schedule for all the anesthesia resident. He has given himself 1 #2 call in 2 months.

One more thing, then I'll be back on topic! Having had an epi and non-epi birth, I have said I don't want one this time around. But, of course, I am already fearing the pain and remembering what it was like, so I am sure I will be one of those women he complains about who insists I do not want an epi and then will be calling the anesthesiologist at 2am!! (And no, no way in heck would I let my husband do it!)

Lilliana Elizabeth was born at 3:02 am on 7/23/09. Dh is in the shower, and then we'll download some pics. 8 lbs 4 oz, 21 inches.

Here's the story. They started my pitocen at 11am. The nurse that was with me was pretty obviously pissy about the number of inductions my Dr's office does and right off the bat she dropped little things that made my experience rougher, but we can discuss that later. Anyway, one of the other dr's broke my water at 12:30 to spead things along...I was a little afraid of this, but it wasn't any worse than my drs rough exam a couple of weeks ago. about 2:30 they asked if it was okay if they started my epidural since they were about to deliver 3 other babies (all there after me ). At this point i was only 2.5 Cm, and the contractions were getting strong, so I agreed, hoping it wasn't too early. To cut this short 10 hours later, I was 5 cm, 95% effaced and she was 0 station...not a lot of progress and I was getting really worried about c-section. Stupid me started to notice the epi was wearing off, but I didn't say anything since I thought it could be the contractions were just getting stronger and I wasn't really sure if it was REALLy wearing off(it was). so at 2:30am, it started really getting to be about the level it was when I agreed to the sucker in the first place. I told the nurse (different, awesome one) and she said that I should have mentioned something way sooner and they might have to completely redo it--epid SHOULDN'T wear off unless something is wrong. But she said, let's just check you first. And then DH woke up to hearing her tell me, "honey I think it's time to push!" She got my dr and sure enough it was time. 30 minutes later Lily entered the world with her daddy's huge head.

I felt a lot more than I thought I wanted to, but luckily there was enough juice left in the epi to take a very large part of the edge off. It wasn't really that bad until it was time to stictch me up and even that wasn't too bad. I really think without the wearing off of the epi, the pushing would have been way harder and taken me a lot longer. For me it wasn't the like best experience ever like some people say, but it was pretty close to as good of a birth as you can have.

I did tear, but not too terribly...so far the whole down there stuff isn't horrible, but I hope it'll heal quickly. And i ended up with one whole stupid hemorriod, which I think hurts worse than the stiches, but it's bearable too.

Now onto the fun stuff. My new DD is so adorable and super sweet at least so far. All the nurses wanted to keep her. We are trying to bf, but she is on the verge of jaundice, so I hope that doesn't stop it. We have to go to the dr at 9 tomorrow.

Our cats are EXTREMELY curious right now. I have so much I want to tell you guys but I have a LOT to do, so I'll be back later...gonna post pics on facebook...

Congratulations! Your DD is beautiful, and I love her Mickey socks. I didn't have the greatest birth experience, either, at least until DD was actually born! But it's over and you'll heal.

I hope all is going well at the doctor's. We were lucky with DD that she didn't have any jaundice, so I have nothing to say about it that will help. My understanding was that it's very common.

Here's a question for anyone that can help... My skin is breaking out (lovely) and I know that I can't use anything with salicylic acid, but how about benzoyl peroxide. Just one of those topical creams that dries it out. I'm just not sure...

For the jaundice - have you let her get some sunlight (like through the window) - it is old school, but it works

yep thats what it was. I'm sure i moved the cathedar and that was the problem...i'll never know if it was fixable or not.

All i do know is that after hearing from both of us, PLEASE ask the dr!!!

I think there was something wrong...near when i noticed the loss of effectiveness, they had me moving all over to keep lily awake.

of course its super overcast.
shes doing really well and my milk came in big time so i've been pumping and we;ve been able to give her that instead of formula. Alright time to feed...

Just got back from our Disney Babymoon last night and we had a lot of fun but my feet sure did hurt and they are starting to swell a bit!

We got a lot of stuff for the baby and the nursery!

Hi ladies, hope everyone had a good weekend. I have a quick question. This is my third and I am 14 weeks now and I could have sworn I felt the baby move last night. Do you think that is possible this early?

I think it's a bit early, but probably not impossible. I'm 12 weeks with my 3rd and have felt weird 'feelings' in that area, but I think it was likely muscles stretching or something. Not painful like the ligament pain I had with the 2nd, but almost like movement, but I don't think that's what it is yet. I also thought I felt a contraction last night, cause I internally felt tightening, but on the outside nothing was tight so I have no idea what it was. I normally start BH contractions around 16 weeks so this would be really early, even for me, but it was weird.

This weekend was rough, I was so sick, and even with my husband home all weekend it was terrible. I'm so hoping for a better week. Saturday we're driving to NJ to visit my mom (and pick up my old maternity clothes) so I hope I am not as sick then as I was this past Saturday.

I felt flutters with this pregnancy at about 13 weeks and this is my first baby. I felt them about once or twice a week for a few weeks, until I started feeling them more. I know it was the baby, because I still get similar sensations when I feel her move her head down there. . . it is my first baby and most will say it was too soon, but maybe I am just more in tune with my body. I think i am since I am always so paranoid about anything I feel my body doing that is out of the ordinary (I had cancer a few years back and so I am always vigilant, and i think I have been able to become more sensitive to things). Anyhow, I think you may have felt the baby. They say that the more you have the sooner you start to feel them.

My midwife said this week that you have BH contractions the entire pregnancy, you just don't start to actually feel them until later. So it is very possible that you felt a BH contraction. Hope you have a better week too Shirt should get there this week (I didn't make the cutoff time for the post office Saturday so I am going today).

I never knew that about BH contractions. I know my dr was never concerned that I started feeling them at 16 weeks, but my SIL's OB made her go on medication when she started feeling BH contractions around 22 weeks and said it was too early. Kind of freaked me about about myself, but my dr assured me it was fine. An hearing what you said just made me feel a lot better.

BTW, with my 1st I felt her move at 16 weeks, which was earlier most people thought I would too. I knew I was right when we went for the Level II ultrasound though (which did at 16 weeks with her and my son) cause I said I felt her turn and the tech confirmed that she did-and I couldn't see the screen at that time cause it was facing the tech. Now they have a ceiling mounted screen so you can see the baby move and stuff the whole time, which I liked a lot better than craning my neck around to see the tech's screen.

And thanks again, no rush on running to the post office. Like a pregnant woman wants to run around doing errands. I have stuff to mail to a friend from early June and it's still in my house!

I went out and bought some Dreft yesterday - that stuff is expensive! Does anyone have any tricks on how to organize all this baby stuff that is suddenly appearing everywhere?!

Okay, so we are going to try for a second time to hear the heartbeat. Hopefully, there will be a doctor in the office that can see me this time!! It just makes me nervous, because this pregnancy is a walk in the park compared to my first one, so I keep feeling like I am not pregnant. Hopefully my fears will be calmed today.
