Moms to Be Part 3

Last Thursday, Cathy came down with a cold. She had a low grade fever (never over 99.5), congestion, cough, achiness. She was pretty miserable, but the fever broke by Sunday morning and she's been feeling better and better since. Since she had been sick, I was not a bit surprised when I started to feel poorly on Tuesday morning. I pretty much have the same symptoms as she did, but my fever wanders up to 101.5.

Today, I went to the doc-in-the-box. H1N1.

Ugh, sbell, that's terrible! What are you having to do to treat it? Are you feeling any better yet?

I rode with my boss to lunch today, who drove her explorer across a curb. It was smooth (totally drove across it, didn't hit it) but so bouncy! Now I'm a little scared, but I haven't had any cramping, spotting, or anything. I'm sure it was no big deal, but it definitely made me uncomfortable.

Just curious, did they actually test you or did they just assume? These are the same symptoms everyone is having around here (including my son) but the docs stopped testing so I wonder how they actually know?

Take care and feel better soon.:flower3:

Well I went in for my 37 week appointment today and landed myself in triage. I had elevated blood pressures all day today and just got home from the hospital, all of my tests for preeclampsia came back normal so they sent me home, I was really starting to believe that Evan would be arriving this weekend thought. On the plus side I'm 1cm and 50% so some progress is being made!

I feel like crap, but at least I'm not pregnant so I can aggressively treat the symptoms. I'm taking Robitussin DM, Sudafed, Tylenol, and Chloraseptic spray.

On my way home, I picked up Tamiflu for Cathy. Hopefully, it will keep her from developing H1N1 (or relapsing if she did have it).

Our doctor told us not to ever worry about this type of incident. The baby is protected by a pretty advanced jolt absorbing system.

They did a nasal swab test. It was positive for Type A flu. Since H1N1 is the only type A flu active in the area, it's the winner.

My husband's fever is back up to 103, but he really has no idea what he has, like your son Chloe. He should really go in to be tested, but I am sure he will not. I told him to get Tamiflu, but when he tried to call in the prescription the pharmacist wouldn't accept it cause he's a resident, not an attending. He has a DEA #, but it's through the hospital since he hasn't finished residency yet, and the stupid pharmacist refused to accept the script. Now, if I had the paper prescription it wouldn't have been an issue, but they are rebuilding the CVS near us, which is basically the only 24 hour pharmacy in walking distance, so I can't go fill it. I will tomorrow morning though, as there's such a short window where that stuff works. Ugh.

Melessa - Thanks! I so hope it's not the flu either. Or if it is, I hope it's what I had over the weekend cause that was bad enough, I do not need a higher fever.

SBell - Sorry to hear you and Cathy are sick too. You and your wife sound exactly like what we've gone through here in the past week. My fever was slightly higher than your wife's (peaked at 101), but otherwise the same, so it's scaring me that that's what we had/have and my kids will be next. Both kids had coughs last week, but no fevers or achiness, so I dread having this spread to them.

Kristen - That must have been a slight scare for you with the hospital and all! What was your BP? Mine was elevated today (it's normally 100/60, and was 117/73, so still totally normal, but high compared to my baseline) and I think it was due to being sick and under stress lately.

My OB visit went well for the most part, but he (the OB) was incensed that my husband has not yet gotten the flu vaccine. The best part is that now, unless he is tested, he won't know which flu he had and therefore which vaccine he'd need. Ugh. I still plan to get the H1N1 Saturday with my kids (since my OB's office didn't have it today, though they should get it by Monday) since I have no idea what I had and with the notices coming home about H1N1 at school and going to WDW, I figure I can use the protection.

I got a refill for my progesterone injection prescription and the lab slip for the glucose test. I was going to come back and do the test another day, but I figured since I was already there and trying to stay out of my house with my sick husband I'd go ahead and do it. I asked my dr about fasting vs. not and he said that you do need to fast for the 3 hour test, but for the 1 hour it should be more about the 'normal' you, so as long as you don't stop at 7-11 for a Big Gulp on the way to the test it is fine. He suggested eating a protein bar or something similar beforehand. All I had today before my appt was some raisin oatmeal (which I am sure is loaded with sugar, but it was about 3 hours prior and the only thing I ate since an apple at 7pm last night) so I figured I was fine. Can't be worse than my 2nd kid and the Starbucks meal! I had to be out of there to pick up my daughter at school so I chugged that nasty orange drink and the receptionist was cracking up. She must have thought I enjoyed it or something.

I also filled the prescription while I was waiting the hour for the test so I'm set with progesterone till 36 weeks which is when I can stop taking it. Funny thing is that my son told me today he likes shots now and wants all his shots in his butt like me from now on. I guess he's been paying more attention than I thought!

Next up is a growth ultrasound before my next appt which is in a month. Or 2 weeks as the stupid receptionist scheduled it for, but I need to change that. Every single visit I tell her 4 weeks and she comes up with totally arbitrary dates! I questioned her in the past, but have since realized she is not going to understand me and have given up. Now I just take the random date and reschedule it.

ETA: Aurora - When I was pregnant with my 1st, I rode the safari at AK without thinking. We were seated in the last row and it was so, so bumpy. I was 19 weeks at the time and felt horribly guilty the whole ride and after I got off cause I was absolutely sure I had done something terrible to my daughter. Thankfully it was all fine, but wow, I know that fear you're talking about!

Just That- My BP has normally been 116ish/60-70's but today it's been 140's/90's and it's been that way all day (just took it actually on a portable electronic one my aunt gave me) The doctors said that it's slightly high and that if it continues to creep up then I'll be delivered sooner...but all of the other tests came back normal so that's encouraging. I've showed no other signs of preeclampsia so that calms me down a bit too. Evan's looking perfect they said and is actually still measuring a little big so they want to do a growth ultrasound. I'm ready for my little boy to be here.

It's pretty likely that he has H1N1, but there's not really a downside to getting both vaccines.

My OB told me not to worry about stuff like that either.

She said the amniotic fluid is the best shock system ever created. :thumbsup2

Hope you're doing good (all of you!)

I still lurk. :rolleyes1

No, you're right, but if he does have H1N1, then he may as well save the vaccine for someone who hasn't had any immunity to it. Not that he can get that vaccine right now anyway....

Kristen - My husband was telling me today that 140/90 is the cutoff, so there you go! I was mentioning that mine was higher than normal (and my heartrate too, it was 109) but my dr wasn't concerned cause it was still normal compared to most people.

Wow it took me a while to find this thread today!
I hope everyone is feeling better - add me to the list of people taking Tamiflu
I've had a cold/cough since Friday, tested negative for the flu but on Saturday started running a low grade fever, alternating between chills and sweats, and basically feeling miserable all over so my OB started me on Tamiflu just in case. So of course now in addition to feeling miserable I'm feeling nervous that this could potentially harm the baby - but trying to stay positive and hope for the best!

Knock on wood, my kids have only had colds, and I have not caught either one of them!!

Don't fret.
When I was 12 weeks pregnant with DD#2 we were in Cambodia and had to ride in a taxi to the Thai border for 3 hours. The roads were horrid and looked like the moon. We were bouncing like popcorn. I never had any issues and when we got home I asked our midwife about it. She said that the baby is very well protected against such stuff.

I am starting to freak out about H1N1. My old OB was not very interested in me getting it. He thinks I am low risk but I just had the intake meeting with my new OB and they are recommending it.

I am a SAHM, DS stays with me and I limit his contact with others. No gym childcare, no gymboree or anything like that. My DH works out of the house but within the next few weeks is going to start traveling so that has me concerned. Dh is on the fence about getting it too so I am not sure what to do. If I decide to get it, he will go ahead and get it. He doesn't have any high risk situations either, except that he had a nasty virus go to his heart in May and landed him in ICU for three days ... I dont know if that would count as a higher risk person. I suppose we should ask his cardiologist about that.

I hate these decisions. I vax DS but on a spaced out schedule ... I just don't care of the idea of vax's in general but realize their place and their helpfulness ... The H1N1 just scares me. Either way we most likely won't get it for DS. I just don't know if DH and I should get it.

Hi everyone. I know, I popped in a few weeks ago, then dissappeared, and now I'm popping back in again. I hope no one minds. I just caught up with all of the pages that I had missed.

I had a wonderful trip to WDW a couple of weeks ago, when I was about 25 weeks. I had been afraid I might not be able to keep up with my usual WDW schedule, but I had no problems at all. In fact, one day we started with early entry at DHS, and hit all four parks ending back at our room at 1:45 AM after the MK closed at 1 AM. I had more energy than everyone else. To top it off, there was unusually hot weather and it was near 100 degrees every day. It was a great trip.

We are having a lot of presumed H1N1 flu around here. Initially we tested a lot of people for the flu, and got a lot of + influenza A's back. Those are all presumed H1N1, since that's really been the only flu strain seen so far this year. Now people aren't really tested since we know it's in the community, it's just assumed if they have the symptoms they have the flu. A lot of pharmacies are running out of tamiflu, so often only the very young, very old, or people with complications/risk factors are being treated, everyone else should just stay home. I got my H1N1 vaccine last week, my OB got some in and I was lucky enough to get one. So I hope I have immunity by now, or at least it's getting there. I know I had a ton of exposures, but I was being very careful and wore a mask a lot when around infected people at work, so I hope I avoided catching it. I chose not to take tamiflu for prophylaxis, I just crossed my fingers for immunity to build up quickly from the vaccine. I just don't like to take medicine unless I absolutely need it. I did get a bit of a cold, but that thankfully seems to have been short lived. I consider myself lucky to have gotten the H1N1 vaccine, especially in my little community. I have a friend in Pittsburgh who is 34 wks pregnant, works in a hospital admitting pts, and had pts with H1N1 in the ICU, and she can't find the vaccine. My husband and mother were able to get the vaccine as well through work.

We had planned to buy baby furniture from one of my husbands co-workers, but now it seems like he's changing his mind about selling it. I don't really care, because now we can just buy whatever we want, but I kind of liked not having to make any decisions. Are there any brands out there that are universally recommened, or ones to avoid? I thought we had most everything already, but now we need a crib, changing table, and possibly dresser and nursing chair. I'm thinking a convertible crib, which wasn't what we had been buying. I'm also thinking cherry.

I'm now 28 weeks, and thankful that everything has been completely normal so far. I have my 1 hr GTT at my next appt in 2 weeks, I was told not to fast, but not to eat anything after I drink the glucose. I usually fast the mornings of my appts, though, b/c I'm so freaked out about seeing my weight go up and up!

Walk the stairs and BD a lot...not at the same time though...LOL

DMickey - I would get the h1n1 shot if I were you. I got it on Saturday, along with my mom and kids, and my husband will hopefully be getting it soon. Though you don't do Gymboree classes and whatever, I assume you still go grocery shopping and touch the carts, to the bank, post office, mall and touch door handles, elevator buttons, etc. And then there are trips to the OB where there could very well be sick patients. As your little guy gets bigger and compresses more and more on your lungs, you are more susceptible to bad respiratory illnesses, and not only would that just suck for you, but with a 2yo to care for as well as being sick and pregnant, well, it would be rough.

If I had been on the fence about it at all, seeing how sick my husband last week would have sent me over the edge. We don't know what he had, if it was h1n1, seasonal flu, or a bad virus, but he was SICK. He had a temp of over 103 for days, was super achey, exhausted, coughing, and overall miserable. He took 1 dose of Tamiflu and then proceeded to vomit all day from it, which just made him feel even worse, and it's a fairly common side effect. If I had been that sick (and I think I had a milder version of whatever he had the week before him) I can't even imagine how I could possibly function and care for my 2 kids, plus be worrying about the new baby, etc.

And I will say that, like all men, my husband is quite dramatic with illnesses. But this time he truly was ill, so much so that he had to stay home from work. He has never taken a day off of work (other than scheduled vacations). When our son was born he left work early, barely made it to the hospital in time, and was back on an overnight shift the next day. So to even consider taking a day off for being sick means he was legitimately ill.

Disneylovr1 - Feel free to pop in whenever you can! Glad to hear you had a great time in WDW. It sounds like you had a really nice trip. And it's reassuring to hear that cause we leave Friday for a big extended family trip and I am concerned about how I'll be able to do, but hopefully I can be like you! Luckily we're going with a lot of small kids, so I'm banking on that to slow the pace a bit for me.

Today will hopefully be spent making shirts for the kids to wear in WDW, finishing some laundry, and getting started on packing. My kids have swim class tonight and my husband has to take some prospective residents to dinner, so I'm on my own for the night as he won't get home till long after the kids are in bed. Not exactly what I'd like right before a trip, but oh well.

I am so with you on this. One day you hear a story about how you should get the vaccine and the next it's all about how there isn't enough testing done and you shouldn't get it. So frustrating. My OB office called yesterday and said that they are going to be getting the vaccine in and are calling all the pregnant patients to see who is interested and then will determine how they will give it out. I don't want to get sick but I don't want to harm the baby either. sigh...

On the upside I registered at Target yesterday! So fun to scan all the stuff you want. And they gave you a little goody bag when you signed up. :goodvibes

If it helps you at all, the h1n1 vaccine is just like any other flu vaccine. Flu vaccines contain what the researchers believe will be the 3 most common strains that year. At the time of production, h1n1 wasn't that 'popular' yet. If it had been, it would have been one of the 3 strains put into the regular flu vaccine. It is produced exactly the same way (each flu vaccine is 'new' each year in that they are targeted for different strains), the only difference is this particular strain. But again, if it had hit its peak prior to April/May, then it would have been one of the 3 strains in the regular flu vaccine.
