Mom & Son-One More Time w/Dad! 11 days of DxDDP-10/21, Grand Finale, FF Chef's Table!

So we got back Monday afternoon. Here it is Wednesday night and I still haven't been to the store! We have nothing and I mean nothing to eat. DS and I both started new jobs today. DH is flying to Raleigh, NC as I type this. School starts tomorrow. Very overwhelmed!

But I did get all my pictures loaded into Photobucket last night. Picking DS up at 6, going to the store, figuring out dinner and maybe I will get the first review up tonight! Definitely tomorrow as I will have nothing to do after work!

(As a side note, really liked the new job. Two women I worked with at another Bank about 5 years ago are working there. So nice to see friendly faces!)

Thank You!!

Glad to hear that your new job is going good so far!! (and yeah for having friendly faces......BONUS!!)

Around here we call that "vacation mode." It takes over a day or two before vacation and keeps going a few days after! :rotfl2:

That's great that you knew some people! Glad you're liking it!

Ok, so here we go! DS and I got on the train in Deerfield Beach the morning on August 23rd. We enjoyed visiting with my sister, nephew and dogs but we were ready for Disney!

We checked in at the AKL and a room was ready. :goodvibes We booked a standard room so I didn't expect much. Let me tell you ... this room had to be as far from the main lobby as could be! What a loooooong walk to the room! Opened the door to find:

And these guys outside!

Cooperstown013.jpg

The animals weren't there all day but towards the end of the day they seemed to come to this area. It was a great extra bonus!

We were starving and headed down to Mara.

Cooperstown018.jpg

DS had the chicken flatbread and I had the falafel pita with two bottles of water.

Cooperstown017.jpg

DS loved this! I admit that we are not familiar with indian/african flavors so I am not completely sure what the seasonings were but it was good.

Cooperstown016.jpg

I was less thrilled with this. One of DS's friends Mom has a falafel stand at our local farmer's market and this was really nothing like hers. I didn't like the giant blocks of falafel, would have preferred smaller pieces. And it wasn't real crispy. I also did not like the sauce. Would have preferred a tzatziki type sauce.

That's ok ... I needed to be hungry for our Flying Fish Chef's Table! ;)

Our lunch was OOP as we were not yet on the dining plan. $21.44

DS gave Mara a

Next up should be that FF review but I am saving that one for later! :thumbsup2

So, next up will be breakfast at Boma!

Enjoying reading your posts! We love the AKL ... have stayed there twice. Can't wait for the Flying Fish chef's Table review! Don't make us wait too long! :)

Yay, you've started your reviews! :cool1: I must admit I'm a little disappointed you are not doing your FF Chef's Table dinner next, but I can understand why you would want to save it for later. ;)

Oh, and thanks for posting the non-food pics also. The room decor at AKL looks very nice, as does the outside decor. You can't beat having a savannah (animal) view at a standard view price. :thumbsup2

Wow, that flatbread looks really, really good. I have had the pulled pork flatbread at Roaring Fork before but that looks delicious. Was the chicken particularly spicy. It looks almost like Tikka.

I've had the chicken flatbread on a previous trip and also really enjoyed it. :) Looking forward to more!

It's great to visit family but to get on the train and know your destination was WDW!!! Hooray!!!

I love the look of the AK room and to see the animals outside your room - how AMAZING is that??

The flatbread looks really good! The falafel pehaps not so much. I would have wanted smaller pieces as well - looks like it was harder to eat this way.

Ok, so I will wait patiently for your FF Chef's table review and enjoy Boma in the meantime.

BTW: Glad to hear you are enjoying your job and seeing some familiar faces! :goodvibes

I will try not to. I want to be able to do that review when I have a lot of time to do it proper justice!

I do really like the AKL. And yes, the view was a bonus. There was a fenced in area to the right of us and they had some kind of wild boars there. Red something hogs. They thru boxes to them. They literally looked like Amazon boxes. The hogs banged them around, threw them up in the air. They seemed to have a blast with the boxes. Well, the giraffes were totally interested and leaning their necks way over the fence to see what was going on. It was so funny! But it is dusky and at a weird angle so no way to get a good pic.

DS said just "a bit" spicy. He likes things very spicy though so take that into consideration.

So what it spicy? ;)

Yeah, very disappointed in the falafel. But what can you do? I don't think the picture showed the big pieces or I probably would not have gotten it.

Yes, job is going really well. I really like it so far!

I had that chicken flatbread a couple of times on our last trip. I really liked it. I wouldn't call it spicy but it definitely has a lot of flavor. I was getting ready to be sad that I didn't try the falafel but then reading your review, maybe not. I don't remember it being there but I have only recently discovered falafel so I might have not noticed it.

Can't wait for the chef's table review. And where is dh? Did I miss that he was meeting you later?

The flatbread looks really good! I also agree on the falafal. It should not be huge squares! I also tend to go more for tatziki sauce.. Some places use Tahini sauce which I don't care for.

He will be appearing soon! DS and I got there Thursday afternoon, DH's flight came in late Friday morning. :thumbsup2

So Friday morning I made an ADR at Boma for 9:30 figuring DS and I would have breakfast and then wait for DH in the lobby. I was going to be a good Diser and keep track of what time we checked in and how long we waited but I failed! I know we didn't wait long.

I was amazed at how crazy crowded Boma was! Oh my, it was chaos. Because of this, I did not take any pictures of the buffet.

My first plate ... bacon, sausage, a waffle, some goat cheese scrambled eggs, banana foster french toast and the cornbread/corned beef hash "thing" that I forget the name of! :scratchin

Cooperstown047.jpg

Everything was just Ok for me. DS felt the same. Nothing stood out as being really great.

And my second plate

Cooperstown048.jpg

Pastries and fruit. I found the fruit too cold to enjoy. Had to wait for it to warm up a bit.

We both had the jungle juice, I had tea, DS had coffee. Total cost OOP was $40.45.

This day was our Boma, Sanaa and Jiko day. Remember when I said that we enjoyed 2 out of 3. Yep, this was our least favorite. And possibly DS and my's least favorite meal of the trip. I don't have one reason that I can point out. Yes, it was crowded and noisy but I expect that in Disney. It did seem that our waittress wanted to be any where but serving us. But again, if the food wow'd me that wouldn't ruin the meal. As much as I want to love Boma, I just don't.

So Boma gets a

from us.

Oops...I was totally wrong then on this one. Now I can't wait to hear about your lunch at Sanaa. ;)

DS arrived, we hung out in the room watching the animals & catching up on stuff. Walked around the resort a bit and then headed over to Sanaa for lunch. We ate at Sanaa last year and all deemed it the worst meal of the trip for us. Not because the food was bad, but more likely because it is just not our favorite flavor palette. But with all the great reviews here, I knew we had to try it again.

Our server, Katie, insisted that she remembered me from last year although we all agreed that she was not our server. But she was very friendly and gave us a few special extras so all was Ok with us!

I started out with a mango lassi (mango puree with non fat yogurt). I had this last year as well. Very creamy and refreshing!

Cooperstown051-1.jpg

We all shared the Breads - Our choices were the Naan, Papadum and Paneer Paratha with Cucumber Raita, Garlic Pickle and Roasted Red Bell Pepper Hummus.

Cooperstown052-1.jpg

As with last year, we all really enjoyed this! The Naan was our favorite.

DH decided to have the fish of the day which was salmon with seasonal veggies in a light curry broth.

Cooperstown056-1.jpg

He really enjoyed this dish and ate every bite. At this point, DS and I were not being very adventurous and we didn't try it.

DS chose the Slowed Cooked in Gravy option with the short ribs, butter chicken and basmati rice.

Cooperstown055-1.jpg

Oh my! This was heaven on the plate! We asked for extra Naan so we could sop up every bit of the gravies. This was the first time any of us had tried butter chicken but hopefully it will not be the last. Chicken was super tender and the sauce left a very luxurious feeling on the tongue. And the short ribs were fall apart tender and not at all fatty.

I really wanted to try the tomato soup with paneer cheese

Cooperstown057-1.jpg

OOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH, I truly loved this soup! Rich and tomato-y with the melty cheese cubes. I am searching for a recipe as I would love to try to recreate it at home.

Katie also brought us two sample servings of what she said were new salads on the menu -

Watermelon, cucumber and fennel (sorry for the blur)

Cooperstown053-1.jpg

and Bhel Puri

Cooperstown054-1.jpg

Both were very tasty with the watermelon one being particfularly refreshing.

We were all stuffed but knew we had to have dessert. I really wanted to try the pina colada rooibos tea

Cooperstown058-1.jpg

This was just Ok. Didn't really taste of coconut or pineapple to me.

I asked about getting just the chai cream for dessert and was told that it is only part of the sampler. But that instead of the three desserts in the sampler, we could have three of the chai creams! OK!

Cooperstown059.jpg

Cooperstown060.jpg

Amazing, creamy goodness in a cup! Katie gave us the recipe, maybe I will give it a try at home one day!

Total cost for lunch still OOP was $85.63. And worth every penny. We loved this lunch! The atmosphere, service and food all get a

from us!

As a side note, we left Sanaa and went to see Art of Animation and then to DTD. After several hours, I realized that I had lost our gift card. I didn't remember putting it away at Sanaa. At that time, I think there was like $70 on it so not the end of the world but still. DS went back to Sanaa just in case and Katie saw him walk in and went to get the card. Very, very nice of her to put it aside and give it back to us!
