"Mom, Dad, 3 Kids & a Gingerbread Boy" Matty's Wish Trip December 10-18, 2009

ok, back to the story.....................

Now I must admit that I've been surprised to read the lack of interest in Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure that seems to run rampant on the DISboards. One look at their website and I was HOOKED!! With countless rides, shows, the Macy's Holiday Parade and............................SEUSS LANDING!!!!! I mean who would not want to experience Seussville!!! Heck, I could probably hang out there all day long just soaking up the whimsical scenery and taking in the magic. To me, Dr. Seuss is an absolute genius and his imagination and creativity is cause for great celebration. My children have heard/read his stories many times over. So, needless to say....................it was Seussville or bust!!!

We make it to the park at about 10:30, follow the magic blue line (that provided us preferred parking), park our van, and proceed to take the looooooong trek to the park entrance. What a walk:eek: And no warning! Just an alert to those who have yet to go.................be prepared.

Here my Nicky Noodle is on one of a series of MANY moving walkways (thank goodness for small favors) with his new friend, a dinosaur, he adopted from the initial GKTW welcome bag:

100_2060.jpg

while waiting for Daddy to secure a stroller, Nick and Olivia pose for pictures:

100_2061.jpg

100_2062.jpg

and then we catch a px of THIS........................perfect isn't it??!!!!:

100_2063.jpg

the boys, as is typical, find some interesting looking vehicles to examine and sit on/in:

100_2064.jpg

100_2067.jpg

I yell at Matty for some silly thing or another right before this picture is taken..............note the boo boo face:sad2:

100_2068.jpg

but, fortunately he recovers from the trauma of Momma's wrath pretty quickly:

100_2069.jpg

It is much later than I hoped we'd be arriving so we boot it......................as far as I'm concerned, we simply can't get there quickly enough:

100_2070.jpg

and, oh my goodness, it is more wonderful than I had envisioned PLUS it is fully decked out for Christmas! We force the kids to pose for px:

100_2071.jpg

100_2072.jpg

100_2074.jpg

and then find that these little creatures are kind enough to pose for us too:):

100_2073.jpg

Up first.....................the Cat in the Hat ride:

100_2075.jpg

This ride brings the book to life!! Fans will likely enjoy these photos:

100_2089.jpg

Matty is so enthralled with this ride that he insists we go again.......immediately!!!!:

100_2084.jpg

(oops, seems I've used up my single post picture allotment...........be right back!!)

Oh wow!! I haven't been to Universal since '94 and it looks nothing like it did back then! What great pictures!! :goodvibes

Across the way from The Cat in the Hat ride is the Caro-Seussel........THE most fantastical merry-go-round I have ever set my eyes on:

100_2436.jpg

and, of course, we must ride more than once! The enthusiasm, I think, is captured in the faces of the children:

I know that I am particularly happy with the new friend I have made (cute, isn't he???):

200912111208275.jpg

Eventually we manage to pull ourselves away from the Caro-Seussel and find our way to the Seuss Trolley Train Ride. This ride allows us a fabulous view of the whimsy from above, as well as some close-ups of Seuss' fantastical imaginary worlds and characters:

The surroundings in Seuss Landing, in a simple word, are just fun. I must confess that I would like my neighborhood/house to look like this LOL (I'm sure that Melissa AKA yinyangirls is not surprised):

100_2397.jpg

100_2439.jpg

After the Trolley we realize that 'The Show' is getting close to start time. We head in that direction. It is a bit chilly on this day, not a day to get wet, but fas we pass we notice that they have had the good sense to turn off the fountains on One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Seeing we have a couple of minutes, and front of the line access!, we choose to ride. And then....................make a mad dash to 'the show'. 'The Show' that I was, perhaps, most looking forward to watching:

Up next: "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"

Pamela

Amazing pics so far! I am one of those few that am very excited to do US/IOA. Seussville, superheroes, spongebob! What could be better for little boys (well except disney ,of course). Thanks for the pics makes me even more excited.

Now you must understand that this silly Christmas story is a major favorite in my household. We have the book, we have the video, we have the cd..............and the children read/watch/listen to this story Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. Last Christmas dh and I even took the older two to the Broadway musical in Boston. It was terrific. Truth be told, forget the kids, I have loved this story forever. Why, I can even do a pretty fair recitation, from memory, complete with character voices. So Grinchmas, well, it was a definate must-do for us.

Despite getting there at the last minute, we were led to preferred seating up front. The set was really something to see:

100_2455.jpg

And the show did NOT disappoint:

I got quite a kick out of 'Max':

And, MORE snow in Florida!!!!!:

For any Grinch fans I shall include a few videos....................the acting and dancing and music were delightful and will likely be appreciated by those who are 'into' that stuff:

This one is 2 minutes 7 seconds, starts off slow but is quite fun once it gets going:
http://s604.photobucket.com/albums/tt122/pacrosby2009/?action=view&current=20091211125905.flv

This one is 1 minute 49 seconds and includes a number not original to the story but still quite appropo:
http://s604.photobucket.com/albums/tt122/pacrosby2009/?action=view&current=20091211130156.flv

This last one is 1 minute 41 seconds and shows the Grinch in true form:

After the show we are directed back to the bookstore for a photo op with the cranky crafty creature himself:

100_2099.jpg

What an absolute riot this guy was!!!

it's getting to be midafternoon at this point and we are becoming starved for something that at least resembles nutrition. My initial plan involved catching an afternoon bite over at the Monster's Cafe in Universal Studios so we reluctantly head out of our beloved Seussville and in that direction. On the way we just happen to ind a reason to hang out a wee bit longer, a really cute little playpark called "If I Ran the Zoo":

100_2459-1.jpg

Honestly, I think we could have stayed there in Seuss Landing, just there in that little section of IOA, all day long and have been perfectly happy!

Coming soon "New York Comes to Florida: Thanksgiving in December" but up first "No Lines No Waiting"

Ohh..I love it!! I had been thinking of making our US/IOA day a shorter one, but ermm..maybe not! We love Dr Suess also, and I realized that SeussLand was there, but not as great as it looks! So cool you got to see a live show of The Grinch..we read and watch it every Christmas as well. You have me really excited to see your next update now! The kids look like they're having so much fun in all the pics :cutie:

Ok...

That was the BEST review of Seuss Landing I have ever seen!

Do you mind if I link it in the Wish Trippers thread for future Wish Trippers?

Our family enjoys visiting Universal/IOA also. I prefer Disney but DH and the boys would rather go to Universal.:scared1: Anyways, love your review and love seeing the pictures of our favorite part of the park.

Welcome aboard. I've been on a bit of a hiatus of my own the last couple of days (after keeping a frenetic pace for the previous week) but hope to get going again soon. This is like a full-time job!!!

Thanks for the welcome! I hate when darn life and work gets in the way of my DIS time - I actually should be doing work right now.

Love the birthday tradition! What a great thing to do and I am sure it is very appreciated.

Great update! It is funny - I really think Universal/IOA is more for older kids but I want to go when DD is young just for Seuss Landing. I am afraid if she is older she won't appreciate it like she would now. I  the Grinch! It is my favorite Christmas special! Now you are making me think I need to plan a December trip to Seuss Landing!

I was wrong? Well, that's a first! (I like to tell my kids that I've never been wrong before, so shhhhhhhh! :rotfl2:)

Somehow I unsubbed to your PTR. Not sure how that happened but now I'm back and caught up.

Love your pictures of Seuss Landing. They look so familiar, lol! Was it you that said you saw us there too? Or, at least my DH. Apparently I am invisible!

Oh wow!! I haven't been to Universal since '94 and it looks nothing like it did back then! What great pictures!! :goodvibes

I lived in Florida for 2 years back in the early early 90's and never went (I'm assuming it was around then). I have heard so many half-hearted responses to it since I've been on here though..............perhaps it's been revamped more recently and people don't realize. And, honestly, it wasn't JUST Seuss Landing either. Guess you gotta go back huh????

Amazing pics so far! I am one of those few that am very excited to do US/IOA. Seussville, superheroes, spongebob! What could be better for little boys (well except disney ,of course). Thanks for the pics makes me even more excited.

Oddly the superheroes were of no interest to my boys:confused3 Just not their thing I guess. Never found SpongeBob unfortunately. That crazy show drives me bananas but I think the character is hilarious. I think I read somewhere (since we've been back) that he hangs out in the Nickolodean store.

oh yay:yay: I've converted someone!!!

Oh gee thanx:blush: Feel free to link it wherever you like. Funny thing is I was really disappointed because I was SURE we had so many more pictures. We did go again and I have some more px from that day but I thought I had a lot more px of the buildings and stuff. They were so cool.

A lot of people seemt to think of it as a park that is more for older kids but I honestly thought it had a lot for the younger ones (well, maybe not toddlers really but 4/5 and up). We all went on rides as a family and my youngest is 4...................there wasn't any shortage of choices even with him in tow. You would not be disappointed if you went in December. We are planning an 'anniversary trip' (of our MAW trip) for next December and although I won't feel like we need to do/go everywhere, US/IOA will definately be on the agenda:)

Pamela:santa:

I love all your pictures of IoA. I just love that place and even more so at Christmas! Grinchmas is the best and I agree, the buildings are just so well thought out. I actually love all of that park but Suessville is my favorite! I can't wait to see your pictures from US. The Macy's parade also ranks way up there in my most favorite things ever!!

Pamela, great job on the TR of Universal!!! I was planning to go just because we had the tickets but not expecting to be wow'd from all the reactions you've mentioned. I am definitely more hopeful now, even though my kids have not been exposed to much of Dr Seuss. I guess I need to add some of his stuff to our Family Night list??? Now if they had a Shel Silverstein land I'd be in the groove. :rotfl2: (Sarah Sylvia Cynthia Stout would not take the garbage out...)

I'm with ya 100%!!!!! When I saw px from that parade before we went it instantly became a must-do (and we weren't disappointed!!)

Oh oh.....do I dare reveal that I don't know who Shel Silverstein is??????:confused3 The Seuss books are terrific for kids at any age (so silly) but particularly so when kids are learning how to read because of all that rhyming.

Pamela:santa:

He wrote some fantastic rhyming books:
Where the Sidewalk Ends
A Light in the Attic
and a lovely storybook:
The Giving Tree

Oh, here...just take a peek.
http://www.shelsilverstein.com/play.asp

I do remember reading some Dr Seuss and of course know the Grinch and the Cat in the Hat. Since Tessa is just starting to read I hadn't thought much about books for her. Better get on that.

OK...................so out of Islands of Adventure we go in order to make our way over to Universal Studios. Now just for the record it is NOT a hop, skip and a jump from entrance to entrance but, fortunately, we are able to take our rental stroller with us. And thank goodness, because our little Brennan is verrrry hungry, verrrrry cranky and definately on the hairy edge. Once inside the turnstile at US things look very promising indeed:yay:. We check our map, find that the Classic Monster's Cafe is in.. 'this' direction.. and, well, LOOK, we just have to pass all these wonderful rides to get there:woohoo: May as well ride a few on the way right? All are in favor of this new plan. Well, all that is, except my little Brennan but, alas, when you are the youngest of four you get used to it, whatever 'it' may be. First up.........Jimmy Neutron's Blast, a motion simulator ride that has us strapped into a rocket, flying through space, and meeting up with the likes of SpongeBob, the silly folks from the Fairly Oddparents, as well as others from the Niktoons menagerie of cartoon characters:

100_2476.jpg

and with front of the line access we are in and out in no time flat. This ride proves to be great fun.....................we're primed for more! And as luck would have it across the street we see:

100_2477-1.jpg

Ahhhhhhh Shrek 4D! We jump in line (well, to the front of the line) and with the help of some of those silly special glasses we are soon immersed in a fairy tale adventure for the senses. The 'spiders' are a particular favorite of the children but the audience's reaction to these creepy crawlies suggest that not everyone agrees:laughing: The show is a hit! On the way out Matty, of course, falls in love with a stuffed Gingie in the "exit trap" (AKA the store full of all Shrek related merchandise). Lucky for him Daddy caves in and agrees to purchase one. Why, it's like looking in the mirror!!!!!! We also wisely decide to bestow a little stuffed Donkey on our Brennan in the hopes that we can keep him distracted from his rumbling tummy. Fortunately for us, it seems to work. As we leave the store we notice that just around the corner is the Classic Monster's Cafe. YAY. We walk in that direction but................once again.......................find ourselves taking a detour! This time it's for the ET Adventure!! Now, I'm old remember??? ET was big big big stuff back in the old days when "I" was in high school. In fact, my old high school boyfriend (ssssshhhhh, don't tell dh) once presented me with a 4 foot tall stuffed ET, a creature so gosh darn ugly it was cute! Needless to say, I tell the clan that we must ride this ride, and ride it now. So.......we do. The ET Adventure takes us flying through the air on bicycles in an attempt to smuggle the cute little alien back to his home to save his planet. I enjoy this ride because I know the storyline but, truth be told, the kids just don't get it:sad2:. Next time, I think, I must rent the movie before we go.

Finally our stomachs can take no more and we make it to the Monster's Cafe. Well, make it just in time to find..........................that it's CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS:eek: Can you believe it???? I am disappointed as it did look like a lot of fun with all of the monster memorabilia but what can ya do? Second choice? We decide on Mel's Drive-In Diner because.............................well, simply because it's pretty much right next door! Onward!! Oh, but wait........there's Fiona and Donkey from Shrek and they are beckoning for us to come over. We can't very well ignore an invitation can we? Now this donkey is absolutely hysterical and he sounds just like Eddie Murphy. We have quite a time with him and take a few photos:

100_2102.jpg

100_2104.jpg

and bid our farewells. Then, FINALLY, we make it to:

100_2475.jpg

Mel's Drive-In Diner. The kids are famished! The theme here is 50's rock and roll with booths and jukeboxes and a simple menu of burgers and fries. Real quick and real cheap (well, relatively cheap:laughing:) . Most importantly though, it is quick. We find the food to be good, and the portions to be large. We stuff our faces and then move outside to ogle the collection of old cars.........................right up my boys' alley(that includes dh!!)!! The (little) boys pose for a picture:

100_2105.jpg

Fortunately we've been making good time thanks to that front of the line access:thumbsup2. As a result we are sure we can get in a few more rides before the big parade if we just pick up the pace. Olivia, Nicholas and I lead the pack leaving dh in the dust (pushing the stroller with Matty and Brennan). This unfortunately proves to be a common theme throughout the week:laughing: Where are we going in such a hurry, you ask???

100_2472.jpg

100_2470.jpg

The Simpsons' Ride!!!!! THIS ride is fabulous..................a serious motion simulator ride through a crazy carnival atmosphere. Although the line is extremely looooooooooong we are led up and around, and down until we are right in the front:woohoo: Nick, Liv and Matty LOVE this ride!! And of course I do too (I'm just a big kid). In fact we have soooooomuch fun that we decide to ride it again!!! Well, all of us except dh and Brennan that is. I guess that it was just alittle toooooooo much fun for them:rotfl:

Next up we stop at JAWS. It looks interesting but I have second thoughts about jumping on board. It has gotten quite chilly by this hour and the staff member tells us we definately WILL get wet. Hmmmmmmmm OK, no thanks! But before we go, we just have to get a few px:

100_2110.jpg

100_2108.jpg

100_2106.jpg

100_2107.jpg

In hindsight I think that perhaps it was best we did not take that JAWS ride. I fear the younger boys may have FREAKED at the sight of that shark, mechancial or not, lurching out of the water towards them:scared1:

OK......time to regroup and check the clock. Time's amovin' on and we really need to head back and find a spot to view the parade. We pick up the speed (bye dh!), make it to the parade route, and find the perfect empty curb right in front of...........................Twiste!. Hmmmmmmm. OK, we've got a few minutes right? In line we go. Now I'm not really sure this is an appropriate choice for my two youngest boys but my dh thinks they will be just fine. We are ushered into a side room bypassing the line. We wait for the next 'show'. While sitting there we can 'hear' what's going on in the adjacent room. Sounds questionable. Once again I tell dh that I'm really not so sure about whether the boys will be ok with this. This time he thinks better of it and takes them outside to wait. All I can say is....................thank goodness. This was truly an experience; like you were right there watching an F5 tornado unfold before your eyes and definately pretty intense. Out on the sidewalk Liv and Nick reveal that while the thought it was 'cool'...............................they'd really rather not EVER go again:rotfl: Guess that says it all, huh?

(oh, oh, if I keep going I'll be over my allotment again. UGH!! I guess I'll be back..............tomorrow night. Gotta go get some beauty sleep!)

Another awesome update!!

I did link your first 3 sections on the Wish Trippers thread and will go back and add this 4th one and maybe the next one.

This is a very detailed look at Universal for Wish Families - awesome job! :)

Woohoo for another update! Thank you for going into so much detail about US/IOA, I think it's the first wish trip report I've seen with so many pics there and such a great description of what's available. You're really moving right along too, I love it..I'll have to follow your example when we get back ;)
