Mission Space Claustrophobic

No one who is claustrophobic should go on this ride. First time I went on I didn't realize I was claustrophobic until the console came towards me. I survived that first ride a couple of years ago. Family/friends wanted to go on this year--I tried to psyche myself up, 'I got through it once, nothing happened to me.' I even tried to give myself a little more space by not pulling the harness super tight. Doors close, console comes down and I start to hyperventilate and panic. Thought I was going to be stuck in there for the ride. Luckily for me, the last group left something in a pocket and a CM opened the door to retrieve it--I bolted! And DD16 followed me--leaving DD11 and DH alone in the capsule. THEY had a great time with it. DD16 and I were thankful to be off it!

So, yeah, do NOT ride this if you know you're claustrophobic!

I went on the green version years ago. I think when you pull the bar down over your head i made sure it wasnt tight.
I get claustrophic aswell.

This ride will make you very claustrophobic. You feel like you are trapped. I had a near panic attack on this ride. I didn't expect it at all. Terrible.

Wow, this sounds like an awful ride.
It is far from awful. Unless you are claustrophobic. Or even border line. Then it would be. But for everyone else, it's no big deal. At least the space issue isn't.
It is a small space. You are in a chair and the console is right in front of you so there is little space around you.
The spinning/feeling like your stomach is in your throat, that could bother some for sure. Which is why they did a green side. It's worse in the orange side.
We feel the green side is boring but we like the experience on the orange side a lot.
I can see the need for the green side though.

The first time DS14 and I rode it we loved it. Then the second time we rode it the control panel moved in close and for some reason we sat and sat and sat and suddenly it dawned on me how close it was and I started to lose it. I managed to not have a full blown issue but since then what little bit of claustrophobia I had in the past has become much worse. I don't ride MS any more...now it's DW and DS and DS5 and I go play in the water and have ice cream.

If you do ride then I highly suggest you use the Green side. This is the 'light' version where the vehicle you ride in does not spin, no G Forces that make some people rather woozy! It still pivots you upside down at times. If a person is claustrophobic then the spinning can make things much worse for them. If they do fine with the green side and love spinning rides then they can ride again on on the orange side. Keep in mind you really do not know you are spinning other than what your stomach and brain tell you!

We went upside down?? Did not realise that.

Like others have said - I would not do this ride if an MRI is too tight. It is definitely a small place.

The car is at the end of a centrifuge that spins. The car rotates to create either positive or negative G's. On blast off you sink into your seat. Once in space you feel like you are floating.

my kids love this ride and I do too but simply can't deal with the spinning even on the green one.. ugh! :(
It is VERY Tight in the cabin...

I realise that it is a centrifuge and that the car rotates (and that G forcres are played with to give the floating/pushed back feelings). What I didn't realise is that it did a full 180 degrees and we went upside down.

I think there is some confusion going around here. Mission: SPACE does not actually go upside down. The "Weightless" feeling is simply the difference your body feels after being pushed into your seat by the centrifuge, plus a bit of a swing to the outside to push you against your harness as opposed to your seat (Green Team only does the swinging). The actual pods do not flip over.

Green Team does not spin at all, though the combination of the swaying, shaking, and the 3D viewscreen can certainly still do a number on some people.

Yes, it is very close and claustrophobic!!! I rode it when there was only one side. I am the type that can ride Any Ride and not get sick or claustrophobic.
However, MS was the exception. When they close the control panel up to your FACE and tell you to look straight ahead (so you won't get sick I presume), it gets real! As I said, I can ride anything without a problem, but that one was an awful experience for me. I was shakey, dizzy, and sick for half the day after it.
So, a big NO from me!

That's what I thought. Which is why I asked.

I'm mildly claustrophobic but this ride doesn't bother me. But sticking me into and MRI is a whole other thing.

I agree with the harness advice. I have very narrow shoulders and last time the harness ended up so far down on me that it made me a bit anxious. Trying to keep them a tiny bit further up may make you feel you have more room in the cabin. I don't really experience claustrophobia but I do feel a tinge of it when on this ride. That said, I make sure I concentrate hard on the screen and it seems to go away. My other friend who was extremely claustrophobic freaked out when we rode it and kept her eyes closed the whole time. They have TONS of warnings about claustrophobia and I'm not sure why she didn't listen, maybe she thought it wouldn't be so tight. The controls do tilt in quite close though. I agree if you have any doubts about small enclosed spaces this probably isn't for you, even the green side. Also, pro tip I learned the hard way last trip - the harnesses come up very quickly at the end so remain facing forward. I turned my head and regretted it. Mickey Ears flew clean across the cabin and I had a nice red mark across the left side of my face for half the day!

It is far from an awful ride though. Like PPs have said, if you don't mind smaller spaces it's really a great experience! If you do, it will definitely be a bad experience in the end. MRIs have made me panic but for some reason this ride doesn't. I like the idea of going through the queue and trying to get a sneak peek quickly in the cabin before you enter.

I think they are pretty use to folks who bail at the last moment so don't feel bad if you decide you can't do it.
And remember, when you look in the cabin, that console is back, it moves to within a few inches of the seats when the ride is in operation. So it will be even tighter than it looks. And it looks pretty small before you get seated.

Oh I didn't mean to make it sound like people don't enjoy it. I was speaking as someone prone to claustrophobia.

It is considered a commercial flop though considering how much money they spent building it versus how many people ride it per day.
