The 257-foot-tall Mickey Mouse arm, glove and wand logo attached to Spaceship Earth in Walt Disney World's Epcot is coming down.

Epcot Vice President Jim MacPhee announced this morning that the time had come to remove the structure, which has served both as a colorful, lighted Epcot sign since 2000, and as a lightning rod for criticism from Epcot purists who contended the image was out of character for Epcot's architecture.

The structure leans on Epcot's previous and future iconic figure, the Spaceship Earth Pavilion, a180-foot-diameter geodesic sphere that can be seen for miles.

Now, however, with Epcot's 25th anniversary this fall, and the temporary closing of Spaceship Earth ride, MacPhee said, "We think the timing of the removal is right."

Deconstruction of the 50-ton structure begins Monday and will be completed shortly before the park's 25th anniversary on Oct. 1. Also coming down are the 36-foot-high "Epcot" letters and colored stars splashing across the sphere.

Also Monday, the Spaceship Earth ride will close to complete a refurbishing sponsored by Siemans AG. The work should be done by November, MacPhee said.

This is sad - I sort of liked seeing the arm with the wand over Spaceship Earth. :confused3 :sad2:

I hope this is true - I cannot stand that arm, it was cute for about 5 minutes

Pigsty, it's probably just you and me, but "NOOO"!!!! I liked the color the arm brought to the Epcot entrance.

I liked it alot too! It added some nice color to it. I wish they'd AT LEAST leave the red Epcot up there. Oh well- it's going to make alot of people happy.

Wow! It's been awhile since I've seen Spaceship Earth by itself! Can't wait!

I liked it also! I am glad I have quite a few photos of it. But I am excited to see what will be in its place as I am sure they won't leave the ball plain.

Count me in with the ones who liked the arm. It will be strange to see SSE bare again. Of course, this gives me a reason to plan another trip after November :rotfl: .

I can't believe this, it's my DSILs first time to the world with us this year and everthing seems to be having work done.

The arm was great for a time, but it'll be great to have the old "big golf ball" back. Prior to 2001, I hadn't been to WDW since 1989, so it's been that long since I've seen Spaceship Earth "au natural".

I actually like the Epcot wand myself, but from a purist sense.....

Now, if they could only remove the Sorcerer Mickey's hat from MGM studios, one could have a classic view of the main entrance (Hollywood Blvd?) to MGM without the commercial clutter.....

I really liked the arm. I must admit I have never seen it without it, but I think it will be missing something.

Aww, I liked the Wand/Arm.:guilty: Call me crazy, but I thought just Spaceship Earth alone looked a little outdated alone and the wand was a nice addition. Maybe the refurb will include the outside too and it will look better when they are done.

wow, Im scared, that so many people on this thread actually LIKE that monstrosity...

I want to go help them pull that eyesore down asap.

I've seen it both ways, and like the arm, too! Oh, well...guess since it'll be gone by the time we get there in December, I've seen it for the last time.

Everyone seems to be assuming Disney will not replace it with something else. Personally I think they will put something else up.....like a '25th anniversary' something.....we'll see....hopefully it is not a 25 ft high 'siemens AG' or 'SAG' sign! :scared1:

I started thinking about this a bit more. (trust me though I STILL want it off!)

Some opinions may have to do with how one FIRST viewed it. I came years ago before the wand - and the "golf ball" was so exciting to see from my hotel room - it was the mark of Epcot. The design was so futuristic looking, at that time, it was breathtaking to see it off in the distance.

Fast forward to people who have only seen it with the wand. It might look incomplete without it...

Either way, in my opinion, it totally changed the look of the structure.
